The NEWPORT NEWS, DES MOINES and SALEM, which serve on. a rotation basis in the Mediterranean as flagships of the Sixth Fleet, are the only three of ia United States Navy cruiser class. They displace 17,000'. ' by . 9- A During our ship's' dfirstdtwo cruises, she flew the flag of Vice Admiral. John AJ. Ballentine, USN, .former commander of the Sixth Fleet. In 1952 the flagvof Vice Admiral M. E. Gardner, Sixth Fleet Commander, waved from our ship's pigstick below the main truck. S' The NEWPORT NEWS' main battery consists of three 83755 automatic rapid. fire turrets with three guns each.dSecond battery consists of 57' and 3 f50 mounts, also automatic rapid fire. With. I116 exception of machinery spaces, all living and working spaces are air conditioned. The NEWPORTE NEWS, named after the shipbuilding city of Newport News, Virginia, where she was built, was com- D missioned 29 January 1949. '
