VICE ADMIRAL JOHN HOWARD CASSADY UNITED STATES NAVY COMMANDER SIXTH FLEET Y oUR AVIATORWITH 1 THREE STARS n The commander of the United States Siicth, Fleet, Vice, Admiral John Howard Cassady, USN, 57, has enjoyed a, long and varied naval career that began in World War'1,years, led him to important communications duties, made him a naval aviator, gave him duty on the first carriers and enabled him to become an expert on the Mediterranean., I V . The admiral, born in Spencer, Indiana, '3' April 1896, was appointed to the U. S. Naval Academy. from- the second District of Indiana in 1915. Graduated and commissioned Ensign in June 1918, with 'the Class of 1919, he received temporary promotion to Lieutenant fjgj during World War AI, and subsequently was promoted progressively to the rank of vice admiral 25 January 1950. IQ I i Admiral Cassady's first ship I was the USS VIRGINIA. He served on that battleship until August 1918'when he was assigned to the USS CASSIN, serving with the destroyer forces based on Queenstown, Ireland. Later he was aboard 'a 'flagship cruiser in the Eastern Mediterranean, before serving- with more destroyers. Q ' ' , The admiral was with the Office of Naval Communicab- tions, Navy Department, at Washington, DQ C. 'in 1924yand 1925, then became district communication superintendent ,of- tl1e San Juan Communication District, San Juan, Puerto Rico. ' 1 i After a duty tour with a mine layer, Admiral Cassady became a naval aviator in D'ecember 1928 at the Naval-Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. , - f I 'l Then came duty with a scouting squadron, Pensacola, duty again, our first actual carrier -- the USS RANGER - the earlier carrier LANGLEY, the American Embassy Lat Ilome, the USS WASP and eventually command o-fmthe ',USS SARATOGA in World War II. In January 1950 he became Deputy Chief of Naval Operations fAirl, andon 27 May' 1952 he assumed his present job. , y ug Among his medals, he wears the Legion of Merit with two Gold Stars and Combat Distinguishing Devicel V 'ff Admiral Cassady's official address is 227 North -Main Street, Spencer, Indiana. The service addressuof he and his, wife, the former Miss Sallie Dold, is Cap Ferrat, France.,
