SENIOR CLASS six THE HISTORY OI' THE SCHOOLS OF NEWPORT Lorme Bell 13 Under the prov1s1ons of the state law 'L school was estabhsh ed ln Newpolt ln the ploneer tlmes about 1837 The school bulld 1ng was sltuated 1n the east part of the town on a lot mst north of the present school grounds The bulldlng was one large room bullt of logs There were no wlndovws the llght and axr came ln through the cracks The seats were slabs of boards very hlgh and uncomfortable The chlldren came to school very early and stay ed hte Mrs John W Parrett and Mrs Abel Sexton of thls place are the only persons l1v1ng here who attend thls school bulldlng The second school bulldlng of Newport was sltuated on the west slde of Poplar street It also was bullt of logs wlth one large loom Under the free school system a graded school was estabhshed about 1852 It was located on a h1ll overlook1ng the beautlful val ley of the Llttle Vermllllon rlver It conslsted of two brlck rooms later two frame rooms were added at a cost of one thousand dol lars The first super1ntendent 1n th1s school was a man by the name of Venable Some of the others who were superlntendents were Baskln E Rhoads Nathan Harvey Josmh C Clmpbell Parks M G Coleman E A Alkman C Clapman C E Kelm and C E Wllloughby In 1897 th1s buxldlng burned The present school bu1ldxng was erected durlng the followmg summer It occuples the lot between Market and EXt9HS1OH streets It h IS a beautlful ground perhaps not excelled ln the state The bulldlng IS brlck and contams seven well l1ghted rooms and four long halls The total cost was between seven and elght thousand dollars The first super1ntendent ID the new bu1ld1ng was G E Wllloughby The first commlsslon was lssued 1n 1900 whlle J W Kendall was super1ntendent Other superlntendents were C C Coleman 1905 06 J I' Gonnelly 1906 10 Charles E McClure 1910 11 Alw1nC Klbbey 1911 193 The other teachers at the present tlme are Jennle K1bby prmcxpal Flora B Carruthers 7th and 8th grades Hattle Stlr walt 5th and 6th grades Gladys Harrlngton 3rd and 4th grades D Crace Rheuby lst and 2nd grades The present enrollment 18 187 Twenty five vears ago whlle E A Alkman was superlntend ent the emollment was 156.
