Here we see Salem Methodist on the left and First Baptist, right. Your town is Newport, located in a metropolitan area at the extreme northern portion of the Bluegrass State of Ken- tucky. Situated on the banks of the Ohio and Licking Rivers, Newport was founded in i790 by Hubbard Taylor and granted a charter from the Kentucky State As- sembly in 1835. Since then it has con- tinued to grow in both residents and industry and now boast a population of 35,000. Because of its centered position in a great manufacturing area, it con- tinues to call many new residents every year to fill the positions made by ex- panding manufacturing and commerce. Your home may be situated on the low-laying downtown area, or on the higher area to the south of Newport proper. No matter in what area you live you are served by many community services. You are constantly protected by the city's police and fire departments, and there is always a mail box near by. You are a member of one of Newport's twenty-three churches, and your shop- ping is done in the downtown area or in the new shopping center at the southern end of town. Your civics classes have visited the City Building many times, and you are well acquainted with the various city departments. All these things-your town, your home, and these local services help you to feel a sense of responsibility to your town and your school. provides a home-services-community spirit 1' 5. Increased emphasis of the pupil's side of the question is an important aspect of teaching that is stressed by the faculty of your school. Encouragement of this in the classroom will be a valuable foundation for active par- ticipation in whatever branch of business or politics chosen at the completion of your education. The classrooms at Newport High provide the biggest per- centage of your education but you dare not forget the after- school chat with your favorite instructor, who you stop in the hall to ask a question. The various interesting assemblies pro- vide educated speakers who are always glad to answer the students' questions after the performance. The deans of the school offer excellent guidance to the students, no matter what the problem might be. All these various educational methods provide the best educaton available to the student of your school, through the important medium of teaching and learning, Above: Jerry Tully and Don Thompson in foreground examine a piece of sponge in Biology Above: Jim Rife and a representative from the Telephone Company explain photo light cell for Bill Knapp Rodney Gross, and Jim Murphy Below: Bary Benlamin and Steve Bohlrnger weigh chemicals in chemistry. 45 1 process of teaching and learning 'fe Q' Above: Dennis Harden, Jack Knock, and, Bill Hightchew work on their math assignment. Through its well-rounded program of student activities, your school life is greatly enriched and your talents and personality are given every chance to grow. An active interest in school organizations will develop leadership and experience that will play an important part in your life after graduation, no matter what your future plans might be. Each and every student interest is well fulfilled at your school, ranging from large organizations to small specialized groups. The athletes at the school enioy fellowship in the N Club, while the talented ones turn to the music or choral organizations. Educational films, an important part of your training, are well managed by the Visual-Aids department. Through the efforts of a hard working publica- tions department, the school is kept well aware of the news through the Newporter and the yearbook. The Student Council does a wonderful iob at school government and is the vital link between the student body and the administration. Other important organizations, too numerous to mention, all do a fine iob in their respective fields. Any action, good or bad, by the students of a school is a reflection of the school system and of the community itself. But the stu- dents of your school try in many dif- ferent ways, to bring honor to your community. Being in a large metropolitan area, Newport has the benefit of many activi- ties that are offered by businesses and industries. The students of your school continually take an interest in these activities and are among the winners of many awards. In the city itself, the students show their elders that the city can be run in the future as it has been in the past. The governmental depart- ments of the city are carried on well when once each year they are run by the students of your school. Another fine example of their interest is the day they manage the local hospital, under helpful supervision of hospital personnel. Many fraternal and religious organizations call for help, and find the answer in the students of Newport High. All of these things are done by the student in hopes that adults will realize that the high school teen-ager is look- ing to the future with a belief that it can be improved through hard work and self confidence. ln your town the student brings your paper, fills your gas tank, sings in your choir, stocks your supermarkets, baby sits for your children, and delivers your groceries. All these things help to pro- vide a sense of pride to both the mem- bers of your community and the students of your high school. Through a well-rounded athletic program, covering all established sports, New- port High provides for the building of the physical body and the satisfaction of a iob well done and a victory accomplished. Desire to win is always the main objective of any athletic team, but the result of one game or one season cannot be determined as soon as it is finished. In organized high school sports, the participant is given the responsibility of advancing the schooI's cause to the best of his ability, in such a manner that the citizens of his town will back up his efforts and take pride in his accomplishments. Each player becomes a part of a smooth running machine which stresses teamwork and Above lion liz-Ni-ilf-r ii-ut Rfxmfvcl Daniels pause to sw-Iv fo' the rafvic-va wlwili: ptizntiiq Qqulpiviwxi cooperation. Through the valuable experience gained on the high school playing fields, the person learns the value of co-ordination, and gains valuable instructions that will be helpful on. life's playing fields after the completion of his education. The sports instructors at your school are more than excellent teachers-they are well-trained, friendly, under- standing counsellors who try in every way to teach honesty, fair play, and cooperation to their team. Through their continuous efforts the various teams of your school continue to be known wherever sports are discussed, and those who participate are a little closer acquainted with the problem of working toward a common goal of peace and happiness for themselves and the world in general. A complete intercommunication system has been installed in the Principals' office, the stadium was remodeled and new lockers were added to the boys' locker rooms, independent heating system, new floors, a complete public address system, and new lockers have been added to the gymnasium and boys' locker rooms. Members ot the Board ot Education meet with the Superintendent and plan tor administration ot Newport City schools, which number nine. These plans are pre- sented to the school principals who set them in opera- tion in their school. Newport should be proud ot the excellent work done by the Administration ot their city schools. A part of each year is devoted to the study of the masters, Shakespeare, Words- worth, Service, Dickenson, and many, many others. This brightens some of the dullness of composition, parts of speech, and sentence structure. Newport is fortunate in having a very strong English department. This past year Remedial English was added. This field of learning will surely be a benefit as we go out in our various fields of endeavor. First row: Mary Eizabeth Morris, Librarian. The council discusses problems and suggestions brought to it by various members of the home rooms. Each home room elects a representative and an alternate to the Student Council. They are chosen on a basis ot scholarship, ability to express themselves, and citizenship. The representatives are in charge of all the Junior Red Cross work and each Christmas they collect money and buy toys for needy families. The work on the annual began the end of the i958 school year. lt con- tinued all through the summer with the selling of advertising for the football program. As the 1959 school year began individual pictures were made and identified, and club pictures had to be made. The boys with the camera were seen at all games and activities looking for ways and means to bring your school and your town into focus for the yearbook. The layout for the entire book was planned and drawn to scale. When the book finally vvent to press the staff was tired but happy and anxiously awaited the proofs and eventually their finished product. Awards were presented at the Annual Award Day in May. Honor Students Recognized by Pi EpsHon Pi In T921 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the first honor society was organized. Now there are more than 2,700 senior chapters ot the National Honor Society in the United States and other countries. The emblem ot the National Honor Society is a key- stone with a torch. The letters C, S, L, S, which appear at the base of the keystone stand for Character, Scholar- ship, Leadership, and Service-the aims of the Society. Newport High School organized a chapter ot the National Honor Society on February 14, 1941, and called it Pi Epsilon Pi. Some of the proiects ot the Honor Society are pre- paring grocery or fruit baskets tor hospitals and de- serving individuals, and sponsoring a tea each spring for all students having honor cards for the first semester, their parents, and teachers. There are thirty-seven senior members in Pi Epsilon Pi. A large number ot iuniors were accepted by the chapter at the middle ot the year. The grade necessary tor consideration tor the Society was raised to keep up with the standards of neighboring chapters. 64 Right: Mary Ann Ries is pinned, by Elaine Wander, for membership in Pi Epsilon Pi National Honor Society. The club consists ot thirty-two members, who are all competent operators, and one adviser, Mr. Lyle Haggard. A lot of hard work was involved in becoming adept in showing films. Not only must the operators know how to show films but also how to take care ot ex- pensive equipment, order films, and return them. Visual-Aids not only shows movies to classes, but also handles pictures tor assembly programs tor the enioy- ment of the students. Members who are in their second year are given pins in the shape ot a projector. Those in the club tor three years receive a guard with graduation date, and in the fourth year, a key. Visual-Aids established rules and regulations which are necessary tor the smooth operation ot the organi- zation. 66 Above: Quiz Team members of the Bible Club were: Helen Pence, Joyce Johnson, Jerry Tulley, Donna Banfield, Don Thompson, and Stella Schultz. Newport had a Bible Club that was really on fire this past year. They had activities within the school and other activities with the high school clubs of greater Cincinnati. Directed by Mr. Howard Barnett, they were really great this year. There were guest speakers, movies, skits, songs, selling of Y.F.C. magazines and book covers at the weekly high school meetings. There were about sixteen officers in the club this year. Stella Schultz was the President, Gary Kuntz and Gary Belcher the Vice Presidents, and Wanda Happe was Secretary. These officers and the other twelve would get together once a month and plan the pro- grams for the club meetings. Members of the club were kept busy trying to get enough points for sweat-shirts, for which they needed 650 by' May. This year a Junior High Prep Club was started by the high school club. This was a regular Bible Club, meeting at Junior High School, run by the high school officers. This Prep Club helps to interest and inform those at Junior High. Saturday nights were big nights for Bible Club members. These were the nights of the Youth For Christ Rallies. The rallies were usually held in the Church of the Covenant in Cincinnati. Gne rally was on the Johnson Party Boat and the Quiz Team quizzed at that time. The Christmas party and rally combined was held in a Cincinnati high school gymnasium. 7 A-we ZF' Q ct' 'VG ' - I -xt J. . 4 'f' rolls., . is . 1 lm. . Row 'I: Glenna Mullins. The George Payne Club CThe FTA at NHSJ is a branch of the National Education Association. This year the club had a new sponsor, Mrs. Gladys Garner. She took over for Miss Ella Stone Spencer who is on a leave-of-absence. Garnet Worthington guided the club as their Presi- dent, Ricarda Hettel was the Program Chairman, and Donna Surrey, the Secretary-Treasurer. The purpose of the club was to promote interest in the field of teaching and to enlighten interested students about such a career. The FTA programs consisted of help- ing the PTA at Open House, decorating candy canes for patients at Speers' Hospital at Christmas time, and visiting schools in the spring. The members also held discussions of school problems at the members homes and assisted in school and community proiects. Miss Hazel Girvin accepted the sponsorship of the Pen Pal Club again after a year of teaching in England. Officers this year were: Garnet Worthington, Presi- dent, Ricarda Hettel, Vice President, Marilynn Hilge, Secre- tary, and Frank Whorley, Treasurer. The initiation this year was a scavenger hunt followed by refreshments. During their meetings the members dis- cuss other countries and get a chance to hear letters from 'foreign lands. A tea was given in the spring of the year for the teachers of Newport High School and parents of the club members. Pins are given to the members who receive the highest number of points during the year. Miss Janice Robbins directed the play. The Broadway comedy hit sketched the tumult in a family that included three teen-age daughters, one of whom insisted on trying out for the high school foot- ball team. But to the surprise of everyone, Ginger's father was really delighted at having his daughter turn- out for scrimmage every afternoon. In the end, the uproarious comedy of the play gave way to a touching, lump-in-the-throat mood as the confused Ginger finds she is about to lose her best beau because of her football playing and she decides being a girl is more fun than scoring end-runs on a gridiron. 4.-PNQL 'S T-kg I VU AN Above: Scenery for the senior play is painted by Bob Lee, Marvin Farrar, Bob Sheilds, Harold Gadd, and Dan Points. left: Cast included: Row 1: Carol Welder, Audrey Morton, Jackie Ziegler, and Margie Butler. Football is an all around builder of boys, both mentally and physically, and helps them to become better citizens. Playing one of the toughest schedules faced by a Newport team in many years the Wildcats ended the season with a 6-3-l record and a third place in the NKAC, Long before school started the 'Cats were on the gridiron preparing for their first game with Somerset. During this time, as the players worked four to five hours daily, the team gradually began to shape up. On the sixth of September the Wildcats traveled to Somerset, Kentucky, where, led by the eleven return- ing lettermen they defeated the Briarhoppers 7-O. Somerset went on to defeat four previously undefeated teams and became one of the top-ranked teams in the state. The following week Newport took on the Green Devils of Dayton. After Dayton scored a touchdown the 'Cats came clawing their way back to hand Dayton a 29-T2 defeat. The Wildcats in their next match were defeated at the hands of the Bluebirds of Highlands by a score of 47-7. Following this crushing defeat the team came roar- ing back to defeat Bellevue for the first time in three years at a field which had been a iinx to the Wildcats. The St. Xavier Bombers of Cincinnati next invaded Newport to hand them a 26-l2 defeat. St. Xavier was one of the top teams in the Cincinnati Catholic League. Newport, under the guidance of coach Stan Arnzen, and led by captain Dan Points captured a third place in the Conference. The team was plagued by iniuries as several key players were taken out of the lineup for a time, Hetteberg injured an ankle early in the season, Pigg was injured in the Newport Catholic game, and Sprinkle on the tour to Hazard. They started well be setting back in succession Boone County and Beechwood. ln their next outing they were stopped by a strong Dayton team. Newport then de- feated Simon Kenton. The following day the team traveled to Louisville to be defeated at the hands of Louisville Manual who were rated first in the state at that time. Following this game they started their win- ning ways again and defeated their next three opponents, Erlanger, Clark County, and Highlands. To begin the new year the 'Cats were out-paced by Ashland Tomcats, The revengeful Newport team bounced back to win their next five games. They beat the Green Devils of Dayton, Boone County, Highlands, Newport Catholic in a thriller at the Cincinnati Gardens, and Holmes. Traveling to Hazard to no avail, the 'Cats were defeated in an overtime thriller by Dilce-Combs and the following night by Hazard. On this trip they lost the services of Sprinkle until near the end of the season. The 'Cats returned to lose to Covington Catholic. After these three defeats the team enioyed easy victories over Ludlow and Dixie. The uniforms consist of black skirts, red or black sweaters, white gloves, white collars, and red and black beanies. Pep Club was organized last year by Coach Bob Miller and Mrs. Margaret McKenna. This cheering section was started to get more girls active in backing the teams and to arouse school spirit. In Northern Kentucky, our school was the first to organize such a club. The club has worked very hard to remain the best ano we think we have. Just before school starts each year officers are elected by the club. This year the officers were Carol Caudill, Captain, Anne Stuart, Co-captain, and Evelyn Weckbach, Secretary-Treasurer. Future plans include the use of flash cards and many new songs.
