As we go along the pathways of every day living, may we leave prints of which we can always be iustly proud. We are not always happy with the paths we follow and the prints we make but we hope each poor print will be used as a stepping stone toward a better. 2' N Q 5.7 'N 5 10 Elaine Stegner and Marcella Lovelace are checking Z the tiles. Little, the Attendance Officer, keeps a record of every school age boy and girl in the Newport school system. He is also the man who comes to call when your feet have strayed from the paths that lead you tp the various public schools in the city. Miss Mattie Phillips, our Dean of Girls, has the respect and admiration of every student and faculty member. Her duties have been many and varied in her years here at Newport High School, Although she is leaving us this year, she will be greatly missed and we know that the footprints she leaves are examples for all to follow. Mr. John Collins is Dean of Boys and writes re-admission slips for each boy, who has been absent, upon his return to school. He teaches Geography, History, and Civics. In addition to his busy schedule at school, Mr. Collins and his lovely wife find time to spend many happy hours at their hobby-fishing. 9 l + NEWPORT STANLEY ARNZEN, B.S. H. S. We chose a course of study which we were to pursue for the next four long, but happy years. We returned in our sophomore year with the renewed hope of attaining our individual goals. Several boys went out for football, and most of them gained a position on the reserve team. When we returned to our Alma Mater this year, our first activity was to accept our class advisor who had been chosen for us by the principal. This advisor was Mr. Howard Barnett, and we immediately elected our class officers. Our big project as juniors was the Junior-Senior Prom, and on May 2l we honored the Seniors in the Hotel Sheraton-Gibson's Roof Garden. Howard Barnett, advisor of the Junior Class, holds a future member of 'some junior class little Janet Elaine Barnett. During August, members of the Business Staff began soliciting advertisements. Along with the opening of school came various other duties. Individual and club pictures were made and identifiedg the activity fees were collected each week, club write-ups were made, proof- read and typed into a final copy. These are just a few of the many iobs which the annual staff must face each year. Several members of the Annual Staff including the editor, Larry Huber, Editor Larry Huber was always busy met with Mr. R. L. NEWPORTER Working during study halls and after school, the members of the Newporter Staff edit nine newspapers a year, the ninth issue being the Senior Edition. This year a point system was initiated. Points are alloted for the various phases of work contributed: such Susan Conway, editor, lays out the front page. as, five points for articles turned in on time, two points for each staff meeting attended, and, for typists, one point for each line of perfect typing. In order to be eligible for an award at the end of the year, a reporter or typist must have a minimum of 75 points. A lot of hard work is involved in being a member of either of these organizations, but the reward comes with the finished product. Lois Leek types Newporter copy. .ay-f' r YXf STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is a group of high school students elected by popular vote of the homerooms. Each home- room selects one representative on the basis of scholarship, attendance, ability to converse, and citizenship. Many improvements, to the school, have been made through the untiring efforts of this group and their advisor, Miss Katherine E. Warren. Proiects which were a part of this past year's work included: Decoration of the Christmas tree, Food March for the Campbell County Orphan's Home, and better light- ing of the entrances to the auditorium. i -.Y L....F J. 1 1 lr -l -:EV og,-l. The pins, which the members wear, are awarded them by the school as a token of achievement. They signify the firm foundation of the club which stands for Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. This year the club dispensed with its annual Christmas party and filled a basket of food which they gave to a needy family in order that they, too, might have a nice Christmas. 43 F! For the past ten years, this club and its advisor, Mrs. Charlotte Kernan, has shouldered the re- sponsibility of providing a program of visual edu- cation for students in every phase of high schodl work. Newport! Newport! These are familiar sounds to the members of the Newport High Pep Club. The purpose of the club is to promote school spirit and good sports- manship among the student body. Mr. Parke, director of Music, is the sponsor of this club. ln order to be a member of the club, you must attend a certain percentage of the games which are played. The Pep Club made the Wildcat sign which hangs over the Newport section in the gym. They also sold school pennants and pom poms. He realized how very much Mr. James Parke had aided in keeping alive the fine spirit of the school. Willie recalled first going to the stadium every autumn evening and pleading with each band member and maiorette to do the routine just once more and to keep up the good spirit. The effort paid off with a rousing applause from an anticipating crowd each time the Band briskly stepped onto the field and swung into a precision half-time show that was not equaled in Northern Ken- tucky. When the 55 Band Members and 16 maiorettes iourneyed down to the Kentucky State Fair, Willie knew that his spirit accompanied everyone through all the fun and excitement. And there the Band, confident and enthusiastic, won the coveted First Place Award in the Class BB Division. A golden trophy was proudly brought home as the first of its kind to be placed among Newport laurels, W 60 Scheibly, Doug Herthel, Ralph Fogel, John Mayer, Georgiana Luke, Barb Herzog, Victor Scharstine, and Joan Morford, Row 4: Darrell Morgan, Susan Conway, Bob Sensel, Wayne Klink, Rudy Heath, Tom Baker, Larry Welp, Jack Moore, Lyle Allen, Tom Bitzer, Linda Waddle, and Stanley Rouse. INS STATE HONORS Willie recalled the importance of the Music Depart- ment in lending spirit to the occasion. The Band pepped up the Pep Rallys, the Chorus under new directorship of Miss Janice Robbins gave choral work frequently. There were Music Appreciation programs to give students a better understanding of the Arts, and there was participa- tion in different civic activities such as parades and P. T. A. gatherings. Willie smilingly recalled joining the hearty applause of the Mad Minstrels of 1954. A parisian theme was put into the music, scenery, and dances. The whole show was created and engineered under the capable di- rection of Mr. Parke. And last at' Graduation, Willie knew that behind the pensive faces of the TO Senior Band members and Major- ettes, were thoughts of the satisfaction that had been theirs for the last 4 years in belonging to the Newport High School Band. And as the sand in the Hourglass dwindled down, Willie knew that his paw-prints are happily pressed into their own high school book of memories. w nf FW, , film A . ., Q.. s wf 1.4 L' I , ,:w.w?AJg,,g..5i Qi f, . 1 fig, ? , HM F J' A 1 1V 'fn '7 Q W . Because The chorus increased in popularity so much, Miss Janice Robbins, our talented director, conducted a special chorus on Fridays during the fifth bell, in addition to The regular fourth bell class. NOT only did the members enjoy their work, but any student who was present for the Thanksgiving, or the Christmas assemblies, or- even at The minstrel, can not deny that he received an inspiration from their well- trained voices. The activities of the chorus extended Tar beyond The school. They sang for many organizations on different occasions, including the First Baptist Church and The World Day ot Prayer. As a reward for their hard work, the chorus was invited to ioin the Band on their annual picnic. Pat Drees, Barbara Warnke, and Gail Gemmer. IN FOOTBALL WE IMPROVE An outstanding football coach, an improved school spirit, and a will to win sent the Newport Wildcats from a dismal 1952 to a victorious 1953. We were very fortunate in having Bob Miller, a former Bellevue coach, at the helm of our determined Wildcats this year. Mr. Miller, who has an outstanding record as a football coach, worked chiefly on fundamentals, which had been overlooked in the past few years. Mr. Miller was ably assisted by line coach Ed Burton and reserve coach Pete Riley. The Wildcats definitely were not ready for their opening encounter, in as much as a completely new system had been taught. After a hardifought game, Newport dropped their initial start to Newport Catholic by a score of 14 to O. As the season progressed, the Wildcats improved to the extent of becoming a winning ball club once again. Newport traveled to Aurora, Indiana where they handed the Red Devils a crushing defeat. The Somerset eleven came to Newport and dealt our boys a heart break- ing 14 to 13 defeat. The --next few games continued in a win-one, lose-one manner due to excessive injuries. The entire student body, as well as Mr. Miller and his Wildcats, looked forward to meeting Bellevue. We wanted to prove to the people of Newport that we had gained a great asset in Mr. Miller. The Wildcats finished the regular season with an im- pressive record of l9 won and 11 lost. The scoring punch of the team was carried by the Big Four , captain Larry Redmond, John Ratliff, Easy Ed Huffman, and Gary Rawe. During the season, Newport, which was alwavs rated among the first ten teams in the state, played highly rated teams in other regions. Many of the teams in the N. K. A. C. fell easy victims to the Wildcats. Down-state teams proved quite difficult for the Newporters. They fell prey to such strong quintets as Adair County, Louis- ville St. Xavier, and Ashland. For the past several seasons, Newport had been un- able to beat either the Clark County Cardinals or the Maysville Bulldogs, however, this year, they were able to defeat both teams. Newport High School, for the second straight year, was invited to participate in the Louisville Invitational Tournament. The Wildcats lost to a sharp-shooting St. Xavier five from Louisville. The first encounter with their arch rival, Covington Holmes, the Cats surprised all, swamping the Dogs by a 36 point margin. In a second meeting, later in the season, on the Covington Holmes floor, the Bulldogs came from behind in the later stages of the game to top our team by a 63 to ol score. These two games were the deciding factors in the N. K. A. C. race, inasmuch as both teams tied for the conference crown.
