CIL GOVERNS US Our school governing body, the Student Council, consists of chosen representatives from each home room. These representa- tives must have certain qualifications as to scholarship, attendance and citizenship. Under the direction of Miss Katherine Warren, the Council meets every other week and on the succeeding morning the home room representative reports to his class the business of the previous meeting. Projects which the Student CouncEl worked on this year were: packing gift boxes for the boys overseas, collecting clothes for a school girl in another part of the state, sponsoring a school election, and decorating the Christmas tree. During the course of the year, numer- ous probiems were presented to the Council via the home room representatives, which they tried to solve to the best of their ability. THE NEWPORTER KEEPS US INFORMED An outstanding policy of any school newspaper is to keep its student body well informed of all events, which are interest- ing and important, in their high school lite and program. It also improves the standards of character and citizenship in the school. The Newporter is published at Newport High once each month during the school year under the supervision of the English teachers, each edition being sponsored by a different teacher. Working on the Newporter Staff gives many advantages to its members. The staff members learn how to write copy, promc read, and how to lay out a paper. They also learn responsibility and respect for schedules. A trip is taken each year to one of the outstanding newspaper plants in this area. This year the staff enjoyed a visit to the TEmes-Stor. Changes in form, type and even title of our school paper may be seen in the three editions from the Tamer in 1914 to the present Newporter. Since that time every student of New- port High hos anxiously awaited the day when he will receive his ANNUAL. At the beginning of the year, Seniors, under the supervision of their odvisor, Mrs. Lelia Peak, began working vigorously, tak- ing pictures, selling ads, writing editorials and preparing layouts to turn out an out- standing annuals The Seniors most im- portant project is to raise funds to help defray the cost of this publication The yearly sole of annuals is conducted through an activity fee. Students who par- ticipate in this activity program, and who complete all their payments receive the Newportian, regular issues of the New- porter, as well 05 other benefits. Junior-Senior Prom The most exciting moment of a girl or boy's high-school days is the night of the Junior-Senior Prom. In 1952 this night was especially excit- ing for Carole Moore, who was elected by the Juniors and crowned Queen of the prom, by Charlie Swope, President of Junior Class. The Queen was accompanied by her five elected senior attendants, crown bearer, and their escorts. The prom was held at the Hotel Sinton Ballroom; and Bert Farber and his Orchestra furnished very enjoyable music. The Junior Class under the supervision of their adviser, Mrs. Dorothy Tebbs, participated in vari- ous types of money raising projects to give us an evening that will linger in our memories always We are eagerly looking forward to the l953 Prom which will be held in the Shera- ton-Gibson Rootc Garden. Well, here is just the place; Newport High Schoolls auditorium. The assemblies are brought to us for pleasure 05 well as education and are amazing and sometimes even unbelievable. They consist of plays, skits, movies, picture slides, lec- tures and many other forms of entertain- ment and instruction The foilowing pictures are from a few of our assemblies that took place during the schooi year of 1952-53. The clock and gate number '1 at Grand Central Stqtion form the background for Barbara Hotacker, quletta Tomlin, Carol Stahl, Annette Baker, Jackie Ritter, and Shirley Hutton, Glenn Igo, Jim Grimme, and Jim Griffin the Instru- mental Trio for Senior Assembly. Mr. Kenneth Strickfuden of Greensboro, North Carolina demonstrated the magneting effect of a telsa coil, the musical effect by interruption of a .disc, amplified the beating of a human heart and also used the human body as an antenna for radio rays. This is one assembly that was really un- believable; both student and faculty looked on with amazement. Bill Litzinger dreams of Joann Derrick, The Girl on the Magazine Cover. mmm 1323?; A profitable course, offered to girls in the high schooi, is Household Arts, Here the girls are taught to do better the things in homemoking that they help to do now and will do later in their own homes Mak- ing articles of clothing, cooking, conning, studying child core, and learning how to care for the body are just a few of the things taught. A very attractive display was set up this year in the library showcase showing the work of the girls in Ci unit on canning Freshmen girls made toys for Christmas. Mr. Edwin Burton helps them select projects, shows them how to draw the patterns, and teaches them how to curve and stomp designs in the leather Some projects are belts, bill- folds, and scissor cases. NS OUR ACTIVITIES 32 year, as one of the finest in Kentucky. This achievement was reached, however, only after much hard work and practice, The lost two weeks in August were spent at summer camp learning new drills, and every day after school was used to bring them to near perfection. Guide right! Stay in line! Left, right, left, right, were the familiar cries heard during the two weeks of band camp and the many weeks of the football season. Under the capable direction of Mr James Parke the band and majorettes were one of the best such groups in Northern Kentucky. They astonished many people with their precise marching, good playing, and intricate dance steps. In March the music department pre- sented the Mad Minstrels of 1953 which was one of the highlights of the year Besides playing and dancing in the minstrel and marching on the football field the band and maiorettes did many other things. Every morning they played the Star-Spongled Banner in the hall, while the Hag was being raised Pep meetings, assemblies, and parades were enlivened by the groups participation. A variety show and concert was given, and last but not least they played for graduation. The student library staff plays cm im- portont part in helping to make the school library service smooth and efficient by tak- ing over some of the simple, but necessary, routine tasks. Duties of the staff include working at the circulation desk, preparing new books and magazines, repairing books, urrongw Eng displays for the display case, writing library news for the Newporter, and giving book talks in the homerooms. Not only do you get the experience of doing these small jobs, but it is also a lot of fun to work on the office staff Cayol Stahl, Jackie RiHer, Dottie Kelly, and Annette Baker, Senior members of the office staff, are ready to deliver the daily bulletins. Mary Krebs, Pat O'Hara and Gloria Pryor plan a program for the Bible Clubbers. Are you familiar with the Greatest Stories Ever Told? Each week members of the Bible Club meet to study and discuss the amazing stories of the Bible. A new and entertaining program is planned for each meeting with different members partici- pating. The programs are planned to honor God and to stimulate on interest in the teachings of the Bible. Members are re- quested to carry their Bibles with them during the school day as a symbol of their membership in the Bible Club and also to create interest omOng their fellow students toward Jesus Christ-the teacher. master and BIBLE CLUB STUDIES GREATEST STORIES Row 1: Pat O'Hara, Donna South, Gail Hampton, Mqry Krebs, Norma Turner, Iris Kelly, Mr. Howard Barnett. HONOR SOCIETY IS MARK OF ACHIEVEMENT Was it worth all the efforts made to maintain an average of 90 or more for two and one half years of school in order to become a member of the Honor Sodety? The students, composed of seniors who are selected in the lost half of their junior year, feel that it was worth the time and effort, and wear their membership pins proudly. The Honor Society, under the super- vision of Miss Katherine Warren, is a no- tional organization working toward creat- ing scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Officers this year are as follows: Presi- dent, James Rouse; Vice President, Jerry King; Secretary, Barbara Hofccker. Statistical records of a season sometimes make a better showing than scores. For example, here are a few of the statistics from the 1952 football season. In first downs we led our opponents with 119 to 80, in forward attempts we had 163 to 92, and we also led in yards gained from passing, with 1354 to 712. In individual statistics, Charlie Swope attempted 158 passes, completed 88 with 0 total of 1323 yards and only 7 inter- ceptions.
