Glee Club The Glee Club officers are as follows: President ...... Vice-President Secretary Treasurer .... Reporter Librarians. . . . Farrier The activities of the Glee Club during the year are providing music for the Christmas Pageant, an annual program sponsored by the Beta Club, the recitals, and other programs presented by the school. Public Speaking The Speaking Club was organized in 1948. In 1949 the following people participated in the Banker ' s Contest: Polly Smith, Shirley Rose, and Annalee Scott. Three students from V. P. I. judged the contest. In our local contest last year Frankie Sibold won first place. The speeches as a whole were a big success. With the proceeds the club made a payment on the movie projector which is being bought by the school. Increasing interest is being shown in the development of literary activities. April 13 has been set for the contest this year. Seventeen members will participate. 33

Beta Club The Newport Chapter of the National Beta Club met and organized in September. The following officers were elected: President Nettie Kirk Vice-President Leathia Porterfield Secretary Treasurer Elsie Sarver Reporter Betty Lou Williams Sponsor Mrs. Givens The new members are: Joan Dowdy, Patsy Smith, Eleanor Vaught, Peggy Dowdy, Adelia Porterfield, Delorous Rader, Annalee Scott, Mattie Sue Porterfield, and Nettie Kirk. We gave a Christmas Pageant on December 18 as a chapel program. It was also presented for the P. T. A. We made choir robes for the benefit of the school. The old members of the Beta Club are Marlene Duncan, Betty Lou Williams, Elsie Sarver, Leathia Porterfield, Frankie Sibold, Norma Williams, Duane Hutchinson, Doraine Criner, and Shirley Rose. Library Club This year, for the first time, a Library Club was organized in our school. The purposes of this club are to assist the librarian in any way which is necessary, to give the members an opportunity to learn something about the library work, and to learn something about the new books which are added to the library. The club is composed of thirty-seven members and some of these members have helped to increase the circulation of books by being responsible for the library before school and during some of the class periods. We hope that sometime in the future this club will be able to make improvements in the library and perhaps add some new books.
