PEARISBURG PUBLIC LIBRARY , THE MARORA ECHO AN OFFICIAL PUBLICATION BY THE STUDENTS OF NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL 1950-1951 1 We, the Seniors of Newport High School, do dedicate this The Morora Echo to Mrs. Kenneth Farrier. With all sincerity, there could never be found in any home, school, or community, one who has served longer, fuller, or more priceless years. Mrs. Farrier has been Music Instructor at Newport High School for the past six years; and before this she taught music at Appalachia, Abbington, Wallace, Greendale, Pembroke, and Pearisburg. We feel that the inspiration, instruction, and endless hours of work that Mrs. Farrier has given us are some of the things which we shall long remember. Words cannot express the honest and deep appreciation which we have endeavored to extend to her on this, our dedication page. Long may her presence, inspiration, and guidance remain with this school and with us. 3 MISS FRANCES HYPES V. P. I. English American Government MR. WILLIAM H. We thought we were rather successful in entering our Fresh- man year of high school. Our high school career started off with a bang ' . ' . Several members of the class were members of the athletic teams. In September of 1948, we entered our Sophomore year with sixteen class members. The year was full of fun and study. 1949: Several members of our class held important positions this year. We had fourteen members in our class. The class presented their annual play, Backwoods Romeo, on March 10. Seniors at last ' . We still had our fourteen class members— three boys and eleven girls. We held a class meeting and chose our motto, class color, and flower. We also elected the following officers: President Frankie Sibold Vice-President Leathia Porterfield Secretary Treasurer Delorous Rader Reporter Marlene Duncan Sponsor Miss Hypes The following Senior Class members occupied important positions on the basketball teams: Frankie Sibold, Delorous Rader, Marlene Duncan, Mary Ann Williams, Kelly Hypes, and Carper Caldwell. Nettie Kirk acted as a substitute. The captain of our girls ' team was a Senior, Delorous Rader. Our Beta Club chapter is composed of nineteen members eight of whom are Seniors. Three of these hold offices. President Nettie Kirk Vice-President Leathia Porterfield Secretary Treasurer Elsie Sarver The President of our S. C. A. is a Senior, Doraine Criner. Before we leave our high school, we wish to give credit for our uccess to the teachers and the principal of Newport High School. 11 Class Prophecy In 1961 the Class of ' 51 met in New York City at Norma William ' s penthouse apartment. She was now a secretary for a large firm in the city. Kelly Hypes was happily married and an all star basketball player for the Bostom Whirlwind Professional Basketball Team. Frankie Sibold had just returned form a missionary journey to India where she was considered one of the best religious leaders. Carper Caldwell was a general in the Army where he had served ten years . Elsie Sarver was an air line hostess for the Trans Atlantic Air Lines. She had been in two plane wrecks and helped save the passengers lives. Mary Ann Williams was an Army Nurse at the main hospital in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She got along beautifully with both doctors and patients . Minnie Sarver had married one year after she graduated and was a happy housewife in Bluefield. Joyce Holdren was a comedian on television and had fallen in love with Beulah ' s boy friend, Bill. She and Beulah had had several fights over him. David Thornhill owned a store in Roanoke. His store hours were from 5 A. M. to 10 P.. M. Leathia Porterfield had just given a concert in Carnegie Hall. It had turned out to be very successful. Delorous Rader was a successful lumber truck driver. She had ac- quired the name of Tall Timber Tessie. Nettie Kirk was now starring in the great production, South Pacific. She was taking the place of Mary Martin. Doraine Criner had graduated from the University of Virginia and was now working as secretary of the Big Four in Washington. Marlene Duncan had graduated from Radford College and was teaching the third grade at Chicago. We were glad to learn each classmate had achieved his or her ambition. We planned to meet again in ten years because we had enjoyed being together so much. We parted again and said good-bye as we did when we left the doors of Newport High on June 1, 1951. 12 Class Will We, the members of the Senior Class, in order to form a more per- fect union among students, this being our last year in high school, and having certain qualities and posessions which we cannot take with us when we leave here, do hereby bequeath the following items to the persons named. We hope these can be of use to them in their future years in high school. Kelly Hypes wills to Bobby Kessinger his height and to Huey Elmore his curly hair. The last publication of the Marorachat before this year was in 1945.
