LITERARY THE LAND OF THE GEGE One day many years after our graduatron I met Norman Frost who was to be my gurde on my huntrng trrp to the Matto Grosso rn South Amerrca to br rng back to the museum a lrve Gege They are very rare hav mg the head of a bobcat the neck of an allrgator the mane of a donkey the front feet of a deer the body of a hog the back feet of a hor se and the tall of a cow Thrs queer anrmal lrves 1n the deepest part of tne Matto Grosso Thrs part has never been ex plor ed by man black or whrte T get to the place one must go through swamps and th1ck yungles whrch contarn man eatrng anrmals porson reptrles and plants and head hunters Our plans were to take a boat from San Fr ancrsco tray el down the coast of Latrn Amer rca through the Str arts of Magellan up to Buenos Arr es and from there we were to go lnto the rn terror Arrrvrng at Buenos Arres a lrttle over a week later we hrred natryc porters and boats On June 4th at 4 A M we started up the Plata Pry er Whrle we were tr avelrng up the r rver we saw th1ck yungles beautlful buds and plenty of cr ocodrles That nrght we had a lrttle excrte ment wrth a crocodrle The next mor ning we had crocodrle steaks After tr avellng a short wav up the Parana Rryer we branched off onto the Prleomays Rrver whrch led us deeper rnto the rnterror Hay mg gone as far as the boat would take us we had to get out and walk the rest of the way Stopprng at a yrllage we lured some natrves They were re luctant to go srnce they thought the place we were headed for was taboo We hnallyf persuaded them Once when we stopped to rest we almost lost one of the porters but thanks to our good shootrng we rescued hrm from the Manachrmp 7 gf He was half ape and half man wrtn long shaggy harr forked teeth and arms twrce as long as the average man s After we burred the Manachrmp we started up the trarl After a few hours of travelrng we came to a bend rn the trarl The trarl led East and we were to go North We started North cuttrng our way through th1ck jungles Every step was dangerous We had to look out for snakes qurck sand and porsonous rnsects After about two days of travelrng through the Jungle we arrryed at a natrve vrllage All we saw was thatched huts Everythrng was as quret as could be The natrves had drsappeared Normre sard that rf we had some salt he would be able to get the natrves to come out rnto the open rng and be on good terms wrth the Chref I told Beyam my number one boy to go get some salt from the packs Nor mre went to the center of the vrl lage and began talkrng rn a forelgn tongue In a few mlnutes the whole y rllage appeared and began rabber rng what was gorng to happen Then ap pear ed a fat llttle man wrth yaguar skrns as a robe and a yaguar head for a crown He and Normre had '1 long talk lastrng about two hours When rt ended Normre came back all smrles He sard that the krng was pleased wrth the salt For the natry es salt rs a rare thrng He also sard that the natrves were the Jaguar people and that where the Cege lry ed was '1 three davs hrke from here througr th1ck yungle Durrng our second day of travel we arrrved at a clearrng As I started across rt I began to slnk 1nto the earth I yelled for the rest of them to stay back In five mrnutes I had sunk to mv armprts Normre burlt a lassc and roped me under the ar mprts They star ted to pull me out but the qurck .
