WINTER CARNIVAL HIGHLIGHTS The annual Winter Carnival of New- port High School was held Saturday, january 31, 1948, with the neighboring school of Hartland competing. Sports events in the morning were held on Tip Top at nine o'clock, and the afternoon events took place on YVitham's Field at two oiclock. From five to six oiclock a supper was held in the Grange Hall under the direction of Miss Brewer, the Home Economics teacher. The impressive ceremony of the Coronation of the King and Queen that evening in the Armory proved thrilling for all who attended. The king and queen had been previously elected by the student body, but the victors had not been announced. The ceremony began with the proces- sion of the king and queen candidates, the guards of honor, and six children marching into the hall, led by their marshal, Phyllis Bachelder. After marching through an arehway of skis formed fby the guards of honor, the king and queen were then crowned by Mr. Stuart C. Chaplin, the queen being Joyce Dyer and the king, James Smith. Their royal majesties then took their rightful positions on the throne and read the names oi the people who had earned awards. The high point school of the day, which was Hartland Acad.- emy, took the cup. An individual trophy was presented to Inez Sewell of New- port, high point girl of the day, and to Maynard Rowe of Hartland as high point boy. Following the Coronation ceremony a dance was held, thus ending the a-n- nual Newport High School Carnival of 1948, with a wonderful' time having been had by all.
