It takes little ettort and goes a great way toward a happy and secure life. If cooperation could start in the home and grow like an epidemic via the chil- dren, the teachers, instructors, and advisers could he a greater help to those same students. Many children get oil to a bad start with the wrong outlook on life. In many cases it is not the childis fault, but the parentsi, because of the poor example they set, If the Children see this thing in full swing in their own home, and prac- tice it in schgol and every day, they Could he much happier. S., may I call to your attention the condition of our school- house? .Please don't misunderstand me, 11am not sponsoring a campaign to build a new structure I am merely advocating a simple clean-up program. Please, boys and girls. cast a Qlance around your home room, the main room, the corridors and the basements. Do you Feel proud of yourselves? Seri- ously, if each and every one of us were to take a single ounce more of interest LUC.UCj 7 53:2 in the upkeep of our high school the improvement would be astonishing. Let us not stop with keeping the building clean but let us be neat and orderly' albout our own desks. It must be admitted that a stranger walking into N. H. S. would be poorly impressed with the students and it stands to reason that any building which is cluttered, dirty and untidy casts a reflection of its inhabitants. My suggestion for improx'ement would be to make an official housekeep- ing hour. Perhaps an appropriate time for this would be Friday afternoong during this time everyone should clean desks. wash boards, etc. But remember, this time would be wasted it no consideration were given during the week. STOP, LOOK, AND THINK! An immaculate school building will be for your own benefit. Class officers for our Freshman year were: President, Effie Fletcher, Vice President, George Gray, Secretary, Mari- lyn Davis, and Treasurer, Betty Parlee. Our candidate for Carnival Queen was Avis YVeir. Sports enthusiasts were Marie Patchell and Jean Rich. It doesnyt seem possible, but We made the grade into our Sophomore year of N. Il. S. IVe were old hands now and no one pushed us around. For otlicers we chose George Gray, Ivan Fletcher, Gloria Bryson, and Joyce Dyer. This year we chose Marie Patchell and George Gray as our candidates for 'Car- nival King and Queen. .Sophomore Speaking was held in February at the movie hall and speakers were: James Smith, First prize, Phyllis Ramsey, lirst prize, and Richard YVilliams. runner-up. Others were Rae Stuart, Joyce Dyer, and Marilyn Chase. Alternates were Marie Patehell and Marilyn Rich. Who hit my thumb? Did you hear Betty Parlee cracked her ankle trying to dust the piano lor this occasion? All this happened March twenty-iirst when we were Juniors. The event was the combined Junior Speaking and Prom. Speakers were: Marilyn Rich, first prize, James Smith, First prize, Joyce Dyer, l't1l11lC1'-1113. Others were George Gray, Paul Frazier, Gloria Bryson, and Phyl- -it' lis Ramsey. Alternates were Richard YVilliams and Jean Rich. Candidates for the annual king and queen, this year, were Joyce Dyer and Paul Frazier. Newport High School looked very good in the early days of autumn of our Senior year. At last our goal had been achieved. To lead our class, this, our Hnal year, we had Paul' Frazier as our president, George Gray his substi- tute, to keep our class records, Joyce Dyer, and to cheek our 'Hnancial con- ditions, Verlie Hartley. This year our Senior Class was pleased to have as King and Queen of the XVinter Carnival Sports, Joyce Dyer and James Smith. Throughout the years our energetic sportsmen held their places and among them were George Gray, Ivan Fletcher, Paul Frazier, Coburn Finnemore, Rich- ard Williams, Robert Gipson, and James Smith, who were out 'for such sports as football, basketball, and baselball. Now we are taking the Hnal step and we must not forget three members ot the graduating class who have come up through the years together. Jean Rich, Ivan Fletcher and Betty Parlee started school in 1936 and now the iirst twelve years are finished. There were thirty-four stu- ents enrolled at the beginning of the school year with Mrs. Fernald as in- structor. After a few days of school and hard work, we elected our class ollicers and they were as follows: President, Paul Ramsey, Vice President, Iane Wisemang Secretary, Richard Browng Treasurer, Richard rlleedg and Student Council, Paul Ramsey. Later, Betty Look was appointed our 'Eighth Grade Editor for the 'KBooster.', Soon the basketball season drihbled around and the line-up for Boys' Bas- ketball was entirely from the Eighth Grade, While that of Girls' Basketball in- cluded four Eighth Graders. On Thursday' afternoon. December 18th. we had a Christmas social. which we all enjoyed. The Christmas Con- cert directed by Xlrs, Xlonoghan was held at the lligh Street Union Church that evening with the Eighth Grade singing two numbers. lt was voted to have a toboggan party on Tip Top and the President, Paul Ramsey. appointed those to bring thc toboggans and build the fire. It was held Saturday. February T, and everyone had a wonderful time. XVe have had an eventful year of school, and have found it to be quite a change in some ways from years spent in the Grade School Building. As OUI' days in the Eighth Grade draw to a close. we look forward to 'becoming Freslnnen and a part of the regular High School in the tall. 8433324302 20 LITERARY THE UNPRAISED HEROES, MOM AND DAD The trouble with most of us is that we never realize how much anything means to us until we no longer have it, whether it is a toy, a pleasant home, or the love and care of our parents. Not many of us younger people ever stop to think of the trouble and sacri- fice that our parents have endured, without a complaint, to try to bring us up right. We do not stop to realize that a few kind words or a kind thought once in a while might make them feel that their job is not done in vain. After all, they deserve it. They would give us their last centg they would give up anything to give us something that means a lot to us, so why not show our gratitude in part by giving up a little now and then to make them happy? For instance, our mother will stand by us when we need her help. Our father will fight for us, right or wrong, when we are in trouble. They will care for us when we are ill, encourage us when we are discouraged, show u-s where we are wrong, praise us when we are right. These are only a few of the things that parents are doing every dayg sacrificing to help us without our realizing it, or if we realize it, without giving it a second thought. Have you ever asked mother or dad for the car some evening and taken it to a game or dance, the next day iinding out that they had planned to use it themselves? Or have you asked themlwi V for some money to go somewhere spe- cial? They dig down into the remote corners of their pockets and dig out some change or a bill and give it to you whether they can afford it or not. If you havenit witnessed some similar experiences, there is something wrong somewhere, because every mother and father is trying to do the best for you, no matter how strict you think they are. Think it over. Are you doing justice to your mother and father? Could you do a little more to show them your ap- preciation? You hear a lot about all the praised war heroes, lifesaving heroes and other, but let us start praising the unpraised heroes, Mom and Dad. Richard Williams '48 A STUDENTS EXAMPLE There,i' said Student Cray, with a shake of her head, I cleaned out my books and my desk's been washed and cleaned, but I do wish the others would fix up theirs the same. It's a shame, I call it, just plain and flat, that we have to stay in schools with rooms like that. Iill wait no longer. I'll start today and fix up my part of it anyway. Now this student is one of those girls who, when they start a thing, jus-t rush it throughf' and a day or so after, as Seavey came up to Student 'Gray's desk, saw how neat and clean it was, walked away and said, By George, I'll let Cray see that I can be as neat as shef, Now Student Wade sat just behind, . ,, . ' te 45 rx 55173 31 21 0330303 saw Seavey and Cray cleaning desks, and so she fixed up hers to be 'Kin the gamef' Now every junior did the same, and soon every student in N. H. S. was trying his best to g'Outbeat Grayfi And now when Student Council meets, they are proud of their school which canit be beat. The moral of this tale applies to school and other things. Reforms, like snowballs, will keep on growing, if somebody only starts the ball rolling. -tRevision of Farmer Brown's Ex- an1ple.l Doris Kimball S-19 MORTIMER'S FIRST GIRL Another spring had come! The little town of Centerville had taken on a gay and lively atmosphere. Bluebirds had winged their way back home from their long winteris stay in the south. The t1'ees were newly clad in a soft foliage of green. The air was fresh and faintly perfumed with a light fragrance from the early budding -flowers. Highland Avenue, the lane on which Susie Drake resides, has been touched by the magic hand of Mother Nature as she brings forth a new spring. Perhaps this is why Mortimer jameson has turned his mind to thoughts of love. He has suddenly awakened to the fact that Susie Drake is an extremely attrac- tive young girl who is in the same class With him at Centerville High. 'Mortimer has been very fortunate thus far in the first romance of his young life. He had just succeeded in dating Susie for the forthcoming NU Club dance which was to be held at the high school gym the following week. He had been rather bashful in asking Susie, but now the ordeal was over and she had ac- cepted. ln Mortimeris estimation, the week passed by at an unbelievable speed. It was Friday night, a most beautiful eve- ning in spring, with the sweet chirping of crickets and soft evening b1'eezes iioating through the treetops. At eight Mortimer arrived at the Drake residence. He paused outside the gate, adjusted his tie, and gathered up the nerve to continue on his way to the front door. He pressed very lightly on the doorbell, brit the sound of the buzz- ing made him jump. Mrs. Drake opened the door and greeted him in her ever friendly manner. Somehow or other, Mortimer managed to smile and utter a faint 'iHello.', Descending the stairway was Susie, attired in a breath- taking pink evening gown. 'Mortimer thought that she was the most charm- ing girl that he had even seen. Susie had always known that Morti- mer jameson was shy, but not this shy. He could scarcely say a word while they were walking, fyes, walking, for Mortimer had no carl to the gym. There was everything to make a per- fect evening, the wonderful air of spring and a dreamy orchestra, but somehow, to Susie Drake, the evening was far from perfect. The hours passed slowly while Susie danced with Mortimer, for he was continually stepping on her feet. As the gym clock struck eleven, Mortimer said he must go, for his mother would be expecting him. Al- though Susie knew that the dance would continue until twelve, she made no protest. They were soon on the Main Street, with Mortimer trying earnestly to keep up a rather feeble conversation. It seemed like hours to -Susie before they would ever reach Highland Avenue. Finally the Drake residence came into view. They walked noiselessly into the 22 2 garden, where the pale spring HIOOH was casting infinite shadows on the sweet smelling flowers and shrubs. They sat on the garden bench for a few minutes, with Susie knowing that She must End the answer to M0rtim9f,S strange behavior. Mortimer rose shortly to leave, tell- ing 'Susie that he had had a Worldefful evening. Then the inevitable happened when Susie nearly shouted, Mortimer jame- son, what on earth is causing such a strange behavior in you? Strange behavior in ine? flues' tioned Mortimer. 'iln me? he repeated' Why, Susie Drake, how can you be S0 stupid? Why, why, everyone kI10W5 that this is Leap Year! Ohhhhh,,, was all that the WiSifUl Susie could murmur. And the pale yellow moon of spring winked her eye as she smiled down upon them. Lois Boulier '50 ,-l,.1,..---- THE BROOK AND THE WAVE The brooklet came from the mountaili, As sang the bard of old, Running with 'feet of silver Over the sands of gold. Far away in the briny ocean There rolled a turbulent wave, Now singing along the sea-lbeach, Now howling along the cave. And the brooklet has found the billow, Though they flowed so far apart, And has filled with its freshness and sweetness That turbulent, bitter heart. Willis Cetchell ,49 A SUCCESSFUL HUNT It was a cold, frosty morning after a severe snow storm, that a hunter, iso- lated in his little log cabin one hundred miles from the nearest settlement, found himself without ample clothing to keep himself warm enough to endure the in- tense cold. Shivering with the cold, he put his last stick of wood on the fire, grabbed up his rifle and started into the forest, muttering to himself, If only I had a fur overcoat. With this thought in mind he wandered at random in search of food. It so happened that on the same morning a bear, famished with hunger, came from his den, ready to jump on the first object that showed any signs of life. Because of the long snowstorm, he had not had anything to eat for three days and nights. Snarling and growl- ing, he set forth towards the hunter's cabin, which was about ten miles dis- tant. The only thought in his mind was getting a warm breakfast. On the bank of a small stream, be- tween two hills about midway between the bearls den and the hunter's cabin, the hunter and the 'bear saw each other. At the first sight of the man, the 'bear rushed with all his speed to shorten the distance between them. The hunter, while thinking of what a chance he had to shoot the bear, was knocked down by him and inside of two seconds there was no hunter. Thus each received what he wished for: the beafr got his breakfast and the hunter his fur over- coat. Bobby H-aining '50 ., 1, 7:4 1-' -s nt. WINTER CARNIVAL HIGHLIGHTS The annual Winter Carnival of New- port High School was held Saturday, january 31, 1948, with the neighboring school of Hartland competing. Sports events in the morning were held on Tip Top at nine o'clock, and the afternoon events took place on YVitham's Field at two oiclock. From five to six oiclock a supper was held in the Grange Hall under the direction of Miss Brewer, the Home Economics teacher. The impressive ceremony of the Coronation of the King and Queen that evening in the Armory proved thrilling for all who attended. The king and queen had been previously elected by the student body, but the victors had not been announced. The ceremony began with the proces- sion of the king and queen candidates, the guards of honor, and six children marching into the hall, led by their marshal, Phyllis Bachelder. After marching through an arehway of skis formed fby the guards of honor, the king and queen were then crowned by Mr. Stuart C. Chaplin, the queen being Joyce Dyer and the king, James Smith. Their royal majesties then took their rightful positions on the throne and read the names oi the people who had earned awards. The high point school of the day, which was Hartland Acad.- emy, took the cup. An individual trophy was presented to Inez Sewell of New- port, high point girl of the day, and to Maynard Rowe of Hartland as high point boy. Following the Coronation ceremony a dance was held, thus ending the a-n- nual Newport High School Carnival of 1948, with a wonderful' time having been had by all. On the thirtieth of Ianuary a delega- tion of the F. F. A. boys visited the trade show held in Lewiston Armory and remained there all day. Some of the latest agriculture equipment, includ- ing tractors, sprayers and planters, was on display. In the afternoon a colo1'ed movie on mow drying proved very in- teresting. Following the movie a lecture on Selections for Breedingi' was given by a professor from Amherst College. The boys also have a basketball team this year, made up of Future Farmers, under the coaching of Mr. Kennedy. They have played several games very creditably. The Agriculture boys have just moved into their new classroom and have built a lumber rack for the shop. The lumber rack is very nearly filled as we had some lumber sawed and piled it up to dry. The new electric Welder arrived and we are having quite a time learning to weld. 1......3... 93333335 3?1 v- 533133335 GIRLS' GLEE CLUB l lst How: j. Graves, D. Kimball. bl. liich, E, Nladv, G. Despite 'iwintryl' weather, a large and enthusiastic audi- ence heartily received the antics re- sulting from a quarantined sorority house. Not long ago Southern California was rocked by a devastating earthqualce . . . an earthquake of laughter, when an amusing incident happened in one of the well-known sorority houses of a famous university. It was Saturday eve- ning, a number of the girls had already left the house with their escorts for the evening, but a few remained. One of the girls was feeling ill. A doctor was called in to examine her and quaran- tined the house because she had chickenpox! Among those present were several young men who were working their way through college by waiting on tables for the young ladies. Taking this true incident as a basis for The Campus Quarantine, Robert Ray, the author, has allowed his imag- ination to carry the characters through all manner of complications and laugh- able situations. Those inside the house try to get out, while those outside try to get in! Edythe Rhodes wishes to elope with Finlay Carruthes and is prevented be- cause of the quarantine. Mrs. Smith, the house mother, discharges the waiters, Ronald Steele and Gordon Dunn, but is forced to put up with them for two , . tr- Y - r if ' T' 5'-?E 'L..'ii- ' - 'I'-l l F'l' weeks more. Deborah Mercer has heen Writing to Howard Ross, a popular ath- lete from a rival college, and has sent him a picture of her heautilul room- mate, Edythe, telling him that it is her- self. The object of her adoration ar- rives on the campus and wants to meet her personally. She is frantic, fearing that he will see her as she is-a plain but sweet person. Gloria Smith, a niece of the house mother, is in loye with one of the waiters, Gordon Dunn, hut Mrs. Smith has forbidden Gloria to speak to either of the waiters. Ronald is hopelessly in loye with Beryl Shep- herd, who has the chickenpox and is responsible for the quarantine. Gordon has discovered that Mrs. Smith and Dr. Atwell secretly care for one another. and uses this information to his hest in- terests. And so it goes! The day began by the girls coming to school in their long underwear,v with boys' pants rolled above their knees. The hair was not combed and had a green ribbon tied around it. They had a pipe in their mouths and a tobacco can for carrying pencils. Misrnated shoes and stockings and a gunnysack for carrying books completed the en- semble. The boys were cute that day when they arrived dressed as girls complete with nail polish and pocketbooks for carrying pencils. Like thc girls, the boys wore green ribbons, mismated shoes and stockings, and a gunnysack for books. Each boy and girl had a sign on his back saying i'Green Freshmanf' The night of the reception the Seniors made a speech about us, one by one, as we stood on the stage in the town Hall. After the program there was a dance, for which Mr. Barrett kindly let us use his records. After the initiation and reception we were really Freshmenf, THE BOOSTER There have been two issues of our school newspaper, the Booster, this year, one during the month of October and the other in january.
