NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL Agaln hls gaze shlfted to the tum ultuous rlver roarmg past as though charglng some unseen foe Debrls belng tossed about ln the r1ver hke people stampedmg from a burnmg audltorlum gave vent to the fact that localltles above Montlflpso had not been as fortunate as thls town on the hlgh banks of the rlver Washemdown Slowly yet surely hlS eyes crept up the raglng torrent to the rallroad brldge that spanned the rlver a httle north of hls home Some unexplaln able cur1os1ty led h1m to follow the tracks down the hne for about SIX hundred yards to where they were abruptly shut from VIGW by thelr curv mg sharply around a small hlll Even as he gazed at the h1ll he was struck wlth the thought that a tram comlng around the corner could not posslbly weak a But of course thls brldge was safe so worry was needless He had no more than declded that all was safe when the crash of splln terlng wood and falhng rock snapped hls attentlon back to the brldge N tlme was needed to see what had oc curred a glgantlc tree had been smashed agamst the much weakened mlddle studdmg The lmpact had completely demollshed both the tree and the studdlng leavmg the brxdge to wabble and sag llke an elastlc band therefore lf the brldge were tragedy could not be avolded As he gazed at the brldge Perclval suddenly reallzed that hls Luxury Llmlted would be tearlng down the tracks ln about an hour and that no means of warmng the tram s crew of pendmg dlsaster except by Haggmg 2 them 9XlSt6d A qulck glance dls closed to hlm that no one else Montxfipso s only street was aware of the condltlon of the brldge Crazed wlth fear of the destructlon of hls tram and the passengers he unconsciously Jumped from h1s chalr and started toward the xallroad After taklng several steps he vsas aware of sharp cuttmg palns ln hls legs but now that he had started he d never turn back desplte any physlcal tort ures he mlght have to meet Because the wobbly state of hls legs and his returnlng senses had left hlm unable to walk steadily he staggered and stumbled down across the field not once allowmg hxmself to rest By the tlme he had reached the brldge an eternlty seemed to have passed palns now reached hls chest and were stead kept falllng hlm at regular lntervals Intense suierlng was plamly wrltten on hls face The spaces between the tles 1nv1ted hlm to fall Into the torrent below as he pulled hlmself hand over hand fashlon onto the brldge The sway mg and sagglng of the structure was slckemng and the DOSSlblllty oflts col lapslng before he reached the other Slde frlghtenlng Spllnters plerced hls hands hls clothes reddened wlth blood from gashes on hls chest and stomach whlch he recelved from the sphnters of the tles he was draggmg hlmself across Inablllty to walk was upon hlm when he had reached the opposlte shore so It was necessary that he contlnue to pull hlmself over the road bed for the sxx hundred yards to the corner An unbroken red llne marked h1s path -r Q 1 J 4' . . . on . . as - H ' Y V , 9 ' I 9 stop before it reached the bridge: ily growing worse, and his eyesight 9 s ' 1 - . THE LIVE WIRE beings by the bed A ghostly uncon sclousness settled over the room and ltS occupants On the morn of June fifth the sun rose to shlne upon near fiood condltlons in Montlfipso As the day wore on old Sol was not the only one who studled the affalr for toward mmd forenoon the front door of the LeGoon sky resldence opened and an lnvalld ln a wheel chalr was pushed through out onto the spaclous open air porch Thls act was not new but had been done every day slnce May first Slnce hls recovery from an abdomlnal lllness in December Perc1valLeGoonsky had been confined to the chalr by the doctor s orders Don t try to walk unless absolutely necessary for at least a year Gee Mom ejaculated Perclval at maklng hlm comfortable Just think ln less than one h lf of a year from now I ll be able to walk agaln Let s see now that ll be about next December and then skatlng skung and slldlng and everything Gosh' Yes dear that srlght responded hls mother suddenly findlng It neces sary to turn around to hlde a tear that suddenly fought ltS way mto her eye for she knew that those sports were never agaln to be enjoyed by her son Notlng the lack of enthuslasm on the part of hls mother Perclval re mamed silent and busled hlmself at studylng the lntrlcate designs on a chlld s rlng that adorned h1s finger Soon h1s mother retlred to the ln terlor of the house leavlng the pale 2 peaked faced boy to gaze thoughtfully down their yard walk across the broad field opposlte thelr home to tue rlver a roarlng torrent swollen by the recent rams and ln turn hls gaze went to the horlzon of the hazlly seen Pme Blue Hllls loomlng maJest1cally 1n the background As h1s gaze caressed the hllls thoughts began to fllt across hls mmd Thev lingered long on the attack ofln fantlle paralysls that had left hlm partlally devold of the use of hls legs Hls physical health had also been taxed to the extent that certain com mon foods brought on bad gastrlc dls turbances Then hls thoughts shlfted to two years later when at the age of seven he had bravely gone through klndergarten amld the sneerlng re marks of other chlldren Such Jests Here comes slssy Perce and Oh Perclval slssfes had better be at home wlth thelr mothers and others peztalmng to his name and physlcal deficlency were resented yet gal lantlv faced Well d1d he remember the time he had llcked Butch McClouy for calllng hlm a weak kneed Splfldllllg slssy Thxs feat had won hlm the face to face re spect of the chlldren but unknown to anyone else he had recelved a blow ln the leg the effect of whlch he had oc caslonally felt ever SIHCQ Then at the age of elght when he had seemed to be on the road to thorough recovery abdomlnal trouble had confined hlm by doctor s orders to a wheel chair for a year at the least Thus was Perclval occupled here by hls thoughts as he sat upon the porch gazlng at the dlstant hills -r Q 0 J 4- . . . . , L 1 .
