Isn the a wonderful dancer Be yourself be your elf Dorls kept saylng over and over to herself There were no ldle moments for Dons durlng the rest of the summer nor were there any to follow later Lucla Warren 41 WITHOUT A DOUBT S you all know I am a very fine hunter and hke w1ld experlences so I wlll tell you of one of my ad ventures Whlle ln South Afrlca huntlng for polar bears Ibecame separated from the rest of my party As I trudged along the sun went undera cloud and lt became so hot that the lclcles on the end of my nose began to melt I soon became so tlred that I sat down on a cactus plant to rest my feet Later belng refreshed I slowly made my way across the sllck lCy floor of the Jungle where my only foothold was an occasional ant hlll that gutted out of the ICG Flnally I came to an OHSIS and declded to stay there for the nlght I put my feet 1n bo1l1ng water to cool them off Exhausted I fell asleep and upon awakenlng I dlscovered that my feet were stuck ln the water whlch to my horror had frozen over durlng my snooze Iwas trymg to thlnk of a way to free my self when I heard a rustle 1n the leaves and out Jumped a huge l1on charglng horns first I was a fast thlnker and when the hon leaped I thrust my brawny arm down hls throat and grabbed hls tall I gave a qulck Jerk whlch automatlcally turned hlm lnslde out and sent hum runmng ln the opposlte dlrectlon Knowlng the mldnlght sun would be out at twelve oclock to melt th lce I patlently walted untll lt finally dld come out to make me free Many hours of torturous trall blazlng went by un t1lIs1ghted my fr1ends Ihave de Clded to rest up a blt before I take my next expedltlon 1nto the mterxor of Afrlca If you doubt my story please ask someone to dlrect you to Warren lFrank Buckj Brown SAVED BY DEATH The heavy sllence that filled the room was broken only by the stlfled sobs of a woman and chlld The doctor gazlng at the mother kneellng at the bedslde of her lnvalld son looked as though he had accldently kllled a person Is It true what you sa1d'? asked the mother between sobs Yes was the meek reply of the doctor who stood starlng flxedly at a bedpost Then llke a tldal wave brxskness and a sense of routme swept over hlm as ne contlnued matter 0 factly Now lf there s nothlng else I ll leave Wlthout awaltlng a reply he adjusted hls monocle pulled hls beaver skln hat well down over h1s ears yanked on hls heavy bear skln coat donned a palr of mlttens and a scarf and wlth a crlsp Good day left the room The burst of cold December alr that swept 1nto the room at the doctors departure was not notlced by the still traglc strlcken , ,, . . . . . . . , I H ,, . . . . . . 1 - . 1 3 1 . . v . . . 4 . 9 1 7 . , . . . lk I , . THE LIVE WIRE mlserably aware of the truth of her se I won tlet aunty know she sald to herself I ll pretend I don t care I can t make them llke me lf they don t want to and I m golng to stop trylng But I can show them that I am a good sport and I m golng to be Instead of dolllng herself up ln the latest fad xn vlolet llpstlck and purple fingernalls she put on a slmple sport frock and stayed at home to help her aunt wlth a llttle brldge party of older people For weeks Dorls stuck lt out swlm mlng and playlng tennls when she had the chance Just belng herself and not trylng to attract attentlon She stood lt pretty well untll It came tlme for the blg Yacht Club Ball The thought of her beautlful blllowy evenlng dress hanglng 1dle ln the closet nearly broke her heart Nobody had 1nv1ted her and there wasn t a chance Dorls sald her aunt the day be fore the dance Has anyone lHVlt9d you to the Yacht Club Ball? THE LIVE WIRE beings by the bed A ghostly uncon sclousness settled over the room and ltS occupants On the morn of June fifth the sun rose to shlne upon near fiood condltlons in Montlfipso As the day wore on old Sol was not the only one who studled the affalr for toward mmd forenoon the front door of the LeGoon sky resldence opened and an lnvalld ln a wheel chalr was pushed through out onto the spaclous open air porch Thls act was not new but had been done every day slnce May first Slnce hls recovery from an abdomlnal lllness in December Perc1valLeGoonsky had been confined to the chalr by the doctor s orders Don t try to walk unless absolutely necessary for at least a year Gee Mom ejaculated Perclval at maklng hlm comfortable Just think ln less than one h lf of a year from now I ll be able to walk agaln Let s see now that ll be about next December and then skatlng skung and slldlng and everything Gosh' Yes dear that srlght responded hls mother suddenly findlng It neces sary to turn around to hlde a tear that suddenly fought ltS way mto her eye for she knew that those sports were never agaln to be enjoyed by her son Notlng the lack of enthuslasm on the part of hls mother Perclval re mamed silent and busled hlmself at studylng the lntrlcate designs on a chlld s rlng that adorned h1s finger Soon h1s mother retlred to the ln terlor of the house leavlng the pale 2 peaked faced boy to gaze thoughtfully down their yard walk across the broad field opposlte thelr home to tue rlver a roarlng torrent swollen by the recent rams and ln turn hls gaze went to the horlzon of the hazlly seen Pme Blue Hllls loomlng maJest1cally 1n the background As h1s gaze caressed the hllls thoughts began to fllt across hls mmd Thev lingered long on the attack ofln fantlle paralysls that had left hlm partlally devold of the use of hls legs Hls physical health had also been taxed to the extent that certain com mon foods brought on bad gastrlc dls turbances Then hls thoughts shlfted to two years later when at the age of seven he had bravely gone through klndergarten amld the sneerlng re marks of other chlldren Such Jests Here comes slssy Perce and Oh Perclval slssfes had better be at home wlth thelr mothers and others peztalmng to his name and physlcal deficlency were resented yet gal lantlv faced Well d1d he remember the time he had llcked Butch McClouy for calllng hlm a weak kneed Splfldllllg slssy Thxs feat had won hlm the face to face re spect of the chlldren but unknown to anyone else he had recelved a blow ln the leg the effect of whlch he had oc caslonally felt ever SIHCQ Then at the age of elght when he had seemed to be on the road to thorough recovery abdomlnal trouble had confined hlm by doctor s orders to a wheel chair for a year at the least Thus was Perclval occupled here by hls thoughts as he sat upon the porch gazlng at the dlstant hills -r Q 0 J 4- . . . . , L 1 .
