That s what I sald But I No buts lf vou please Just tell us why you took them and I assure you nothlng more wlll be done about It than IS necessary But slr I mean 1 dldn t know anythlng about any examlnatlon er papers Imean You see he IS stutterlng a slgn he lSly1l1g ' Cto several members of the school boardl I admlt when I was young and mlschlevous I used to do wlld thlngs but I always confessed ButI can t confess dolng some thlng I dldn t do My boy do vou reallze what a sacred thlng truth IS? It seems to Dlck took the lecture quletly and wlth out further ado walted for the report of the board Dlck remembered those next three weeks forever ln fact lt seemed llke forever to hlm He wan dered around as ln a daze and startled everyone Wlth hls fast decreaslng marks Then the crlsls camel' Dlck was suspended from school untll the board declded to let hlm come back The day to leave came A crowd of people floyal frlendsb wentto see Dlck off all except Charlle Dlck was puzzled When he had left the dorm Charlle had been readlng a detectlve He had only nodded when Dlck had sald goodbye so of course he would be at the traln to really bld Dlck farewell It seemed funny that Charlle should fall hlm Good old Charlle whom Dlck had helped out of Jams and who had stayed by Dlck for the slx years that these boys had pulled together Charlle must be busy or late yes Charlle was always late Wlth a heavy heart he Sald goodbye to hls schoolmates and waved a hand kerchlef untll the traln had puffed wheezed and Jerklly made ltS way out of the Junctlon leavlng the llttle band a mere speck IU the dlstance It was ln a very sad and shamefaced way that Charlle faced Mr Jackson about a month after Dlck s departure Yes Charlle It was Mr Jackson speaklng to hlm S I er Imean slr well Yes yes my boy go on M J ackson urged Charlle thought to hlmself B stlll my heart' And aloud Well slr Itook those papers It was llke a plstol shot llnglng out ln a clear stlllnlght Those confounded examlnatlon papers? NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL literary CHARLIE DICK AND BETTY T the seminary lt IS acommon sight to see a bench in Plne Grove Park occupled by a young couple heads together dreamily watching a bright yellow moon ascend a velvety dark blue sky studded with twinkling dia monds but not at ten minutes of twelve with an lmportantexamlnation to be taken the next day Evidently Dick Parlln was thlnklng the same thlng He stared at his watch and suddenly stood up Betty' Yes? It s ten minutes of twelve' What? Oh oh Aunt Elise told me to be ln at eleven at the latest You were supposed to be ln at Gosh' That s too bad How are you going to get1n That s Just what I was wondering Probably I ll have to go in through Jack s wlndow Oh don t go in that way Please don t Dlck Just think if someone should wake up or someone should see you Well what do you want me to do go ask Jackson for the key and kiss him goodnight? Richard' You needn t be so mean about It IJust didn t want anythlng to happen Well I don t want anything to happen any more than you do' What do you thlnk? Don tbe so darned mean' Betty s temper was aroused and Dlck knew lt Aw gee Betty please aw for gosh sakes Hey Betty Hey for Heaven s sakes come on back Its b d enough to be locked out Betty' But Betty was already half way home Dick had a temper too That was a fine way for a girl to act after she had got you into a mess like this Ill just forget It He hastened to the garden house and dragged out a long pole Ap proaching the window he propped It up against the building and shinnled up to the wlndow of his room H glanced at the bed through the locked window of his room Charhe Wells his roommate wasnt there Dick wondered Next he tried the wlndow of the principal soflice Luck favored him by having the wlndow unlocked He clambered ln gently closlng lt after him Stealthily he stole down bed and snoring vigorously The next morning of course the pole was outside the WlIldOW Dick s comrades smiled to themselves because they had by some miraculously strange may found out about Dlck s escapade and the principal had also found out about lt and commanded Dick to R port at once At one mmute of one Dick chmbed the thirteen stairs to the Lion s Den thlnking of what was coming H shuffled in through the door and was greeted as he had been greeted in the past Richard' Sir?
