THE LIVE WIRE lidltorlals Undsfclsvmsn At thls tlme of year when everyone seems to be maklng a fuss over the Senlors and they strut around llke prlvlleged characters do not envy them too much' Behlnd the upturned noses proud glances and offlclous attltudes hes a sad and mel ancholy feellng Even though practl cally none of the SQUIOYS would admlt It I dare say that they hate very much to leave N H S Can you blame them' Or don t you appreclate Newport Hlgh School? W hear so much about its poor bulldlng and equlpment that It IS rare to find one who wlll slng lts DFRISES Dld you know that It lS a Class A school that lt offers a most extenslve extra cur rlcula program that lt IS on the Col lege Certlfled Llst? These are but a few of our school assets and perhaps It would be wlsc for some of us to be come acqualnted Wlth them lnstead of forever complamlng about the weak spots of the school It seems strange but one never ap preclates a good thlng untll It IS gone So lt IS wlth those of us who graduate ln June We have hurrled througn our hlgh school course wastlng tlme causlng trouble and never stopplng to thlnk that some day we would regret It But that IS the sensatlon that one gets when he stops to look back there are so many many thlngs that could have been done whlch would have been beneficlal to both school and stu dent Those of you who stlll have one two or three years ahead of you are fortunate don treallze It too late ap preclate N H S now' And don t look upon the Senlors wlth dlsgust for thelr haughty manners but rather plty them Don t worry vour turn wlll come and all too soon OUR REPUTATIONS In the eyes of the law we have a rlght to a good reputatlon If thls thlng called reputatlon ls lmportant enough to be guarded and protected by law lsn tlt lmportant enough for us to guard and protect ourselves? Few of us reallze Just how lmDOTt ant lt really IS Wlthout lt we are not welcome ln the general publlc or ln the prlvate home People no longer care for our companlonshlp they no longer want us around them or other members of thelr famlly Then too lf we have a responslble posltlon the chances are that we lost that posltlon or lf we have no posltlon It would be so much harder to secure one In the case of us students wlthout a good reputatlon we are Just out of all extra actlvltles and the soclal llfe of the school On the other hand a good reputa tlon IS extremely valuable Wlth It we galn the respect and admlratlon of our fellow classmates our faculty and other town cltlzens We are welcome ln almost any actlvlty whether publlc or scholastlc and other parents are glad to have us assoclate Wlth thelr own chlldren When we have gradu ated from school and are seeklng posltlons the references and recom mendatlons of our faculty members and the professlonal people of our home town mean a lot On the whole we are happler and llve a rlcher fuller llfe Let us all guard our reputatlons wlth an lron hand Q Q . . , . . n ' V I . NEW PORT HIGH SCHOOL BETTER ASSEMBLIES Students especlally Freshmen and Sophomores How many of you can hardly walt for Wednesday afternoon to come? Maybe you can t but IS lt because of our enthuslastlc assemblles or IS It because you have a half hour that you don t have to study? It IS easy to notlce that some of the students aren t slttlnv on the edge of thelr seats llstenlng They are elther slouched down ID thelr seats whlsper lng glggllng readlng wrltlng notes or trylng to attract somebody s atten tlOH Is thls the type of assembly you want or don t you want any or per haps not as many? Flrst we must find the klnd of assembly you want and then go to work and provlde for lt We ll all have to admlt we have had some D108 assemblles thls year and some outstandlng speakers but perhaps they went too far over your head When We have talent from the school perhaps thelr Jokes are too old or they have been on the program so much that you are tlred of them That IS a blg problem gettlng all stu dents to take part but how can we get the rest of them to? It ISH t all your fault because when we have assembhes at the school bulldlng lt IS so overcrowded that It s hard to get the attentlon from all There IS more or less confuslon ln the Town Hall and that IS also dlfficult Let s all pledge to take part ln our assemblles encourage and get others to help find new talent suggest new ld93S and we ll have better assembhes THE SCHOOL CITIZEN There comes the tlme IU the latter quarter of the year when the faculty and the senlor class encounter the task of chooslng the wlnner of the school cltlzenshlp award It IS there fore the task of thls short edltorlal to lI1f0I'I0 you of the quallflcatlons for thls honor and to lmpress you wlth the lmportance of recelvlng such an award Flrst let us see what a good cltlzen must do ln order to be ellglble for thls group In the words of Frank N Eaton Jr a former member of our faculty A good cltlzen lsa person llvlng IH a certaln place who lS Just as happy as can be and ln so dolng makes all hlS nelghbors as happy as posslble The person IS a student the place IS N H S the nelghbors fellow stu dents And to make everythlng clear thls IS what a good school cltlzen IS A student who IS Just as S3.tlSH9d as posslble but ln reachlng hls destln atlons makes hls fellow students happy If you boo at athletlc contests your fellow students are ashamed of you Now for the benefit of a few pessl mlsts lf you don t do somethlng so as to make a nelghbor happy but at the same tlme you are d1SS3IlSfl6d you stlllaren t a good cltlzen at school Thus the good school cltlzen s actlvl tles are llmlted to those who accom pllsh a dual purpose of maklng both lts doer happy and also 1tS 3SSOCl3t6S The rest remalns for the lHdlVldUal and may he who has the ambltlon to recelve the school cltlzenshlp award meet wlth success though the stone of lack of cooperatlon obstruct hls path 7 4 1 5 J 1- L, . . - 1 1 T , I v Y , I .
