NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL -r l 5 I 4- COURTESY FIRST How many of us have ever glven a smgle thought to the all lmportant subject of school courtesy ? A few have but the school as a whole prob ably has not Why make lt necessary for the teacher to ask for attentlon after the last bell has rung or at any tlme durlng the class period? Courtesy demands attentlon at all tlmes Whlspermg and chewing gum durmg class are nothmg but a breach of good manners on the part of the pupll How lnsplr mg for the teacher to face a number of puplls whose Jaws are constantly Wo1k1ng' The care of school booksls another lmportant factor to be consldered It IS certamly dlsgustlng to open a school book and be unable to read what has been 3SSlgU8d because of mlssmg pages Thls means that the pupll wlll not be prepared for recltatlon the next day unless he has called the attentlon glven hlma different book lf there happens to be a spare one Most of the damage done to school texts IS done unmtentlonally but that IS no excuse for rumlng some one else s property for of course these books are not our personal propertv Some conslderatlon should also be glven to the furnlture other school property wh1ch gets lts share of pencll marks and scratches A grmnlng face on the desk w1ll perhaps make you smlle but when you come to Wrlte overlt It vslll make you frown What1S more d1s pleaslng than to wrlte over a desk that IS covered wlth pencll carvmgs? Most certalnly It IS the deslre of every pupll to be remembered but why plck on the desks wmdow sllls or walls to leave your slgnatures? Shovlng ahead through doors and runnlng IH the corrldors may get you to your destlnatlon on tlme but agam It may not You may bump into some one lose your balance and fall much to your embarrassment and the delay IH I'lSlDg and collectmg your belong lngs w1ll make you tardy Let Courtesy Flrst be your new school slogan SPORTSMANSHIP Have you ever been to a game where one school IS contlnually boolng and makmg fun of the other? If so you Wlll see what It IS to be a poor sport It IS on the other hand fun to see who can bea good loser and a graceful wlnner agalnst some very good teams Some of them are sports and some of them are not Possibly you can remember saylng at one tlme or other That team has poor sports' or What good sports the teams from are' When you see your teams go smlhng mtoa game you thmk Gee I hope that they wm' But IS that all you hope for? Maybe It hadn t occurred to you but wouldn tyou prefer that they d play falrly even lf they do lose? Of course you do When your team comes out of the garre wlth a smlle of satlsfactlon and generoslty even lf lt dld lose don t you feel better know mg that lt was agood clean game and a lot of fun?
