NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL trucks bulldozers and gas driven dragllnes were employed by 500 picked men who worked in twentv four hour shifts During this work more than 1 000 000 gallons of gasollne exploded ln englne cylinders while S80 000 worth of electric current w s used by floodlights that blazed above 12 eighty foot towers all through the night Many thousand cubic yards of mater lal were moved before this Job was completed Then chemistry showed its wizardry Instead of stripping acres of land for the needed top soil chemists treated the old soll so that it could be used as a foundation for thls great exposition It took two years for scientists to find a way to convert th1s soil into high fertility for plant growth besides a In doing this the falr was saved a half m1ll1on dollars For landscaping of the grounds a regular forest started moving toward the site Experts with books giving the sizes shapes and kinds of trees had been scouring the country for hundreds of miles around They had chartered nearly 10 000 available trees for thelr purposes In the largest movement of the kind railroad flatcars and motor trucks started rolling for New York clty These cars and trucks bore trees of wide varieties and full grown some weighing as much as 25 tons and as tall and taller than 50 ft On one way streets and guided by police cars most of these trucks passed through New York City ln the early morning hours reaching their destination before daybreak Here huge machines hoisted the trees and they were stationed by machines equally as blg Of the manyjobs to be done here were the construction of 17 miles of roads 15 miles of gas mains ten brldges and 2 artificial lakes A tidal dam and an expensive marine basin are well under way In the meantlme the first bulldlngs of the Arabian Nights display were going up Scientists built an outside laboratory in which they experimented to be sure they got the best materials for their use Most spectacular of the structures being made are the trylon and the perisphere They are expected to be the tneme center of the fair The trylon is an obellsk 'rising 700 feet into the alr The perlsphere is a white ball 200 feet in diameter They can be seen for miles The IS formed of eleven miles of wood piling driven into the ground The cost of the construction will be about S1 200 000 In the hollow perlsphere there are magic carpets that will carrv visitors lfl a circle above an 1m mense model of a clty and country side of the future The magic carpets are two 100 ton platforms in the shape of gigantic washers Certain lighting will hide the supports as the platforms revolve at the speed of 30 feet a minute At night colored lights on the globe will make it appear as re volvlng The longest moving stairway in the world will carry spectators to the sphere s entrance which IS tive stories above the ground Sixteen thousand persons an hour will be able to ride up the incline After the trip visitors will return to the ground by a circular ramp from which they can see the en tire fair grounds in all its glory -r I 19 l 1- . a . . . . . . . 44 ,, . . NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL car It was full of boys Oh good heavens she thought here s my first est Sandy her cousln lntroduced them all and they made such remarks as Say Sandy you ve been holdlng out on us' and Well I guess the state of Maine must not be such a bad place after all' Helen knew thls was thelr way of belng pollte and reallzed It was only a hne nevertheless she llked It In the fraternlty house next mornlng Helen awoke fullof pep and ready for an excltlng day She dressed ln her snappy black and wh1te Skl sult and ran out to find Sandy After a hasty breakfast he showed her around the campus After lunch they went up to the skl Jump As Helen read the llst of events her eye fell on the last one It read Speclal Skl Jumplng Contest anyone may enter Sandy notlced her lnterest and sald Why don t you try that one Helen? You were always clever at It and boy would I be proud of you lf you should wlnl Bu I haven t any SklS s e answered Aw heck that s a poor excuse I can get you a palr w1th no trouble at all Come on please try It for my sake We 1 l all rlght And then Helen wondered why she had con sented for Sandy bounded off shoutlng Hey anybody gotta palr of skls I can borrow? My cousln s gomg to do the Jump' She looked uncertalnly at the Jump It seemed hlgher than any she had ever trled and she felt sllghtly worrled Sandy came back Just then w1th the skis They re Larrv s he explalned And he sald for me to be sure to tell you to save hlm a dance to mght that IS lf you er come out all rlght Helen smlled weakly and wlshed he hadn t sald that she only felt worse She turned her attentlon to the Jumpers all boys' They were certainly losing thelr balance and fall mg ln crazy posltlons through the an Somebody Jumped slxtv five feet and the crowd applauded wildly Sandy told her that slxty seven feet was the record on this Jump Helen felt a thrlll of hope she had done slxty SIX feet at homel Soon the contest began The first Jumper dld rather badly but managed to remaln standlng The second sprawled ln every DOSIIIOH and took a IUOT6 Her name was called and she sl1d ln to place adJusted her straps and stood p The vast whiteness made her dlzzy She told herself You mustn t look down Come on now steady you can do lt you know you can And she shot down the runway She went at a SlCk6I'llDg' rate of speed down down and then off lnto space Wlth the aglllty of a blrd Her nervousness left her She thought of nothlng but the thrlll of sklmmlng through the alr at thus speed thls was the life' She hlt the snow easlly and brought herself to a graceful stop amld the enthuslastlc applause of the crowd Somehow Sandy found her and Jumplng around her told her fbetween hugsj that she had broken the record wlth a Jump of SlXty elght feet there -r I 21 l 4- u . v . . 7 ' 44 D 7 77 ' 7 3 Y ' , I I t .
