NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL trucks bulldozers and gas driven dragllnes were employed by 500 picked men who worked in twentv four hour shifts During this work more than 1 000 000 gallons of gasollne exploded ln englne cylinders while S80 000 worth of electric current w s used by floodlights that blazed above 12 eighty foot towers all through the night Many thousand cubic yards of mater lal were moved before this Job was completed Then chemistry showed its wizardry Instead of stripping acres of land for the needed top soil chemists treated the old soll so that it could be used as a foundation for thls great exposition It took two years for scientists to find a way to convert th1s soil into high fertility for plant growth besides a In doing this the falr was saved a half m1ll1on dollars For landscaping of the grounds a regular forest started moving toward the site Experts with books giving the sizes shapes and kinds of trees had been scouring the country for hundreds of miles around They had chartered nearly 10 000 available trees for thelr purposes In the largest movement of the kind railroad flatcars and motor trucks started rolling for New York clty These cars and trucks bore trees of wide varieties and full grown some weighing as much as 25 tons and as tall and taller than 50 ft On one way streets and guided by police cars most of these trucks passed through New York City ln the early morning hours reaching their destination before daybreak Here huge machines hoisted the trees and they were stationed by machines equally as blg Of the manyjobs to be done here were the construction of 17 miles of roads 15 miles of gas mains ten brldges and 2 artificial lakes A tidal dam and an expensive marine basin are well under way In the meantlme the first bulldlngs of the Arabian Nights display were going up Scientists built an outside laboratory in which they experimented to be sure they got the best materials for their use Most spectacular of the structures being made are the trylon and the perisphere They are expected to be the tneme center of the fair The trylon is an obellsk 'rising 700 feet into the alr The perlsphere is a white ball 200 feet in diameter They can be seen for miles The IS formed of eleven miles of wood piling driven into the ground The cost of the construction will be about S1 200 000 In the hollow perlsphere there are magic carpets that will carrv visitors lfl a circle above an 1m mense model of a clty and country side of the future The magic carpets are two 100 ton platforms in the shape of gigantic washers Certain lighting will hide the supports as the platforms revolve at the speed of 30 feet a minute At night colored lights on the globe will make it appear as re volvlng The longest moving stairway in the world will carry spectators to the sphere s entrance which IS tive stories above the ground Sixteen thousand persons an hour will be able to ride up the incline After the trip visitors will return to the ground by a circular ramp from which they can see the en tire fair grounds in all its glory -r I 19 l 1- . a . . . . . . . 44 ,, . .
