NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL 4 l 15 l 1- llterary THE TRAIL T0 PEACE HAVE you ever been out ln the woods Just rambllng and come a cross a trall or old tote road wlth plnes flrs and other beautlful trees llnlng It and felt the impulse to follow lt and camp somewhere on lt'7 That s the typlcal road to peace If you can get away from the mob of human belngs and follow an obscure trall for a long wav and then pltch your camp near a rushing brook or near a lake wlth none of the H0159 of clvlllzatlon where you can t annoy anyone and no one can annoy you that s peace When evenlng comes all you have for company are the danclng flames of your campflre but you soon get used to that and nlght nolses become Nlghtl then comes day break unpar alleled ln a mountalnous region when the great golden orange sun cllmbs higher It s a worthwhile slght to see It burn off the mlst from your lake or stream You bulld your fire and cook your own breakfast which seems to taste twlce as good IU the open The smell of wood smoke fills your nostrils How different It IS from the oll gas and coal of the Clty Breakfast over you douse your flre to keep It from rulnlng your kingdom After decldlng whether to go hunt lng hlklng or fishing or mountain cllmblng you get your compass bearing and start out If you go flshlng you don t use dlrectlon as much for you follow your waterways and don t have to puzzle out tralls Catchlng enough flsh ln an unspoiled lake or stream IS a pleasure but shouldn t be overdone lf you want to leave your water well stocked The best of It lS nobody dlsturbs your pleasure and won t lf you keep lt a secret Mountaln cllmblng IS perhaps an attraction for you and you cllmb to untrod SUmmltS and get a hawk s eye VIQW of your domaln Now you ve come to the end of your llttle stay of relylng on yourself ln,the great out of doors for almost every thlng You ve hunted or flShed con servatlvely and have the satlsfactlon of knowlng that you probably wlll have plenty of flsh or game the next time you come Packlng and breaklng camp IS a task you do downheartedly lf you love the great open spaces as some do You have a lonesome feellng when you take your last look at the water trees mOuUt3lUS raft fireplace and maybe your pet squlrrel you befrlended wlth crumbs You start off then at the bend you turn around and take It all ln before It s lost around the bend Back to clvlllzatlon you trudge to work wlth a heavy heart and anxlously Walt for the season to roll around when you can return Wlll you forget lt?
