THE LIVE WIRE They at last arrlved at the place of thelr destlnatlon and the motor turned off they settled themselves for a H106 day of fishlng One hour went by and there was not even a Strlke then Just as they began to round a polnt whlch extended lnto the bay Luke who was Jlm s frlend hooked a blg one Oh' thls one seemed llke a mon ster He was swervlng lashlng dlV lng and pulllng llke fury Luke was greatly exclted for thls was hls flrst catch IU a whole week and lt would be too bad to lose lt now He got It wlthln a hundred yards of the boat when lt Jumped out of the water He could see It wasa large one whlch mlght welgh as much as gulde lt ln very carefully He got lt up to the boat and then lt plunged deep lnto the water agaln maklnga rlpple ln the water as It went Would he lose thls flsh the only one whlch he had hooked? Would thls one get away so he couldn t prove his story about lt ln New York? He kept hls llne tlght all the tlme hoplng he had lt hooked well enough so he Wouldn t lose It At last the flsh tlred and weak from lts strenuous battle had to submlt to be led lnto the net whlch lnclosed It and was brought lnto the boat After that experlence Luke was a llttle more talkatlve than usual and Blg Jlm sat llstenlng to hlm as he told what he would say when he got back home By thls tlme It was nearly tlme to start for Llly Bay A breeze had started to blow and the clouds had started to gather ln the blue sky over head Blg Jlm started the outboard and headed back for Llly Bay Well we dldn t get many fish but we have had a good tlme havent we? remarked Luke Yes we have had a good tlme all rlght Say look at those clouds and thls wlnd doesn t look so good answered Jlm I thlnk we but Luke was lnter rupted by the splttlng and sputterlng of the motor and then lt went dead Thls was lndeed a crltlcal sltuatlon the wlnd blowlng and the lake gettlng rougher the sky cloudlng up for a storm whlch mlght be accompanled by llghtnlng and whats worse to be elght mlles from thelr destlnatlon ln an open boat wlthout a motor What are we golng to do now? We shall have to take turns row lng answered Jlm The wlnd IS gettlng worse all the tlme so one can row whlle the other balls out water That IS a good ldea and I wlll take my turn at the oars rlght now lf you don t mlnd ' replled Luke So wlth out further conversatlon they began thelr tasks After Luke had rowed for about an hour he was ready to glve the o rs to Blg Jlm By thls tlme they had come only about a quarter of the dlstance to be covered and the raln was comlng down ln sheets They could not see very far ahead of them but they had to go on for there was not any place to land a boat lf they had the cnance Rocks around the shore loomed out of the water llke the teeth of some blg monster who was trylng to reach out lts head to catch and devour the boat and ltS contents whlch was ilounder lng out there on the dark water All at once Luke shouted Dead -r I 28 J 4- . .. . , V 9 . . . . , 1 ' 1 ' 17 ' : . NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL went to a dance CJane fessor s daughter J was the pro Thev had a swell tlme and Andy came lh about 2 10 A M The next dav Andy Prof Endlcott s othce went over to and asked lf the exams had been corrected I have corrected yours slnce lt was passed 1n first I was not surprlsed at your mark but I thlnk you wlll be Prof Endlcott looked at Andy closely Andy could not look 1nto those clear stralghtforward eyes Here It IS Anderson and he handed Andy hls paper Andy looked at It and went Whlte G g g good day slr he stammered Andy couldn t belleve hls eyes zero the questxons he had copled that Tues day mght Geeee wh1zzzl ' was all he could say He had copled them all wrong He started with the second whlch made all the answers wrong Just then Stan came ln Wlth Boy oh boy those eyes that ha1r ln other Words Blg Shot Im trymg to tell vou Ive got a date Wlth your glrl frxend tonlght Andy sald nothlng In the memo book of Kenneth Tremont Anderson Jr are now found these words Resolved To study economlcs hard but never cheat on tests Also Beware of Frlday the 13th M Soper 39 BIG JIM S FISHING TRIP fbias JIM BRYANT had come an the way from New York for a vacatlon at the Llly Bay House sltu ated on Moosehead Lake He was a blg fellow and most people had to look up at hlm lf they wlshed to see h1s fine featured head wlth hght brown halr blue eyes a mcely shaped mouth and a square Jaw which made hlm look rather stern when his mouth was closed He was of athletlc bulld wxth blg square shoulders and had very good posture Another fellow from hls place of occupatlon had come wlth h1m He however was of just natural slze and looked small beslde Blg Jlm The two had thelr Hshlng tackle and were all set for a week s vacatlon They went out every mornlng to fish ID Llly Bay but they dldn t have much luck So on the last day they declded to venture over to Spencer Bay whlch IS ten mlles up the lake They started out early ln the morn lng before the sun had arlsen very hlgh ln the heavens 1U a small row boat wlth an outboard motor attached to lts stern The lake seemed more beautlful than usual The hllls of Sugar Island and the beautlful wooded land around the bay cast thelr lmages upon the peaceful water wlth a brll llance undescrlbed by any artist All was stlll that mornlng except for the putt putt putt of the motor and the sound of the water bemg sprayed up on the peaceful lake To Big Jlm and hls comrade lf all seemed hke a dream to be there amldst the glorles of Mother Nature and away from the clatter of the clty streets -t I 27 l 1- , . .
