Yeah I suppose so but sometimes I would llke to know lf you don t overdo It Well heres where I leave ya Red see ya ln the mornlng Okay so long Practlce started the next mght and contlnued untll the first game The bovs had practlced falthfully and were rewarded by wmnlng the game They contlnued to wln untll they had amassed a total of fourteen stralght but the next contest proved fatal Everythmg seemed to go wrong Then to top everythlng Red got sore and poked some guy on the opposlng team who had been shovmg hlm Naturally the referee dldn t waste any tlme ln put lng hlm out of the game They lost that game and afterwards IU the locker room of the gym they blamed Red He claimed lt wasn t all hls fault saymg that no one would pass to hlm and then that fellow had started shovmg so he just naturally poked hlm back On the nlght of the final game of the season the one that would declde ths conference champlonshlp between Lovell and the nelghbormg town of Jackson Red hadn tshown up and lt was almost game tlme Slnce the team had lost that fatal game thmgs had gone from bad to worse Every thlng seemed to go wrong The boys argued among themselves and seemed to lose all Interest ln basketball Everyone seemed to thlnk that Red was to blame for all the trouble They told hlm so and rode hxm about lt all the ture Somebody oughta sock hlm hard and drlve a llttle sense mto hls head Johnme was growlmg about Red as they changed up for the game He s always late or somethlng Red showed up Justm tlme for the game He got on the floor Just as the startlng wh1stle blew As usual the team dldn t work well together and at the end of the thlrd perlod the score stood Vxsxtors 30 Lovell 21 Durlng the short rest between perlods Red called the boys to g e t h e r Llsten fellows wlll you please? NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL plate Roy would wlnk at hlm as lf he had a great secret At the end of dlnner a speaker got up and made a short speech of wel come Then he asked for a talk from Roy Chapman last year s skl champ lon Chapman started hrs speech and ten mmutes later he was stlll talk mg the subject was hlmself A team mate of Chapman s suddenly shoved a chalr agamst hls legs Chapman sat down wlth a crash a burst of ap plause followed Then tldes of laugh ter rolled up and down the table In a few mlnutes the Unlverslty coach arose and spoke dlrectlons ID a loud volce The trall IS four mlles long outllned with red and green flags A green flag means turn to your rlght and a red flag to your e Hans snapped erect IH hls chalr at these words There IS to be a dynamlte blast to clear a road from a land sllde durlng the race but lt w1ll be a quarter of a mlle off the trall 0 don t be alarmed I guess those are all of the dlrectlons The boys arose and filed from the hall to the front of the grand stand They llned up and then the starter s gun barked Thlrty boys leaped for ward In a few seconds Hans dls covered hlmself second Looklng ahead he saw Chapman ln hls flashy strlped sweater Chapman swerved and Hans followed They had passed thelr first Hag Suddenly Chapman slld and dlsappeared ln a cloud of snow Hans passed hls tangled figure Lookmg back he saw Chapman get to hls feet Hans slld to the top of the next hlll There stood the second flag like a sentry on duty Hans gazed 1n despalr at lt whlle off to hls rlght he saw a group of men As he started down hlll towards them they waved a flag and polnted Hans ran ln that dlrectlon all the tlme galnlng speed Roundlng a sharp bend at the bottom of the h1ll he saw plled boxes H trled to stop but crashed full tllt lnto thus barrlcade Openmg hls eyes he saw a mana few feet from hlm xn an awkward po sltlon Upon looklng closer he saw that the man s legs were held to the snow by a large rock Then he glanced at the boxes In glarlng red letters were the words Dynamlte and Powder Then he saw a sputterlng hlsslng fuse leadmg from one of the boxes He stumbled to hls knees and crawled to the fuse yanklng It from the box He called to the men on the upon seelng the fallen man they rushed forward Its the boss called one I thought he was wlth u after he stopped to llght the fuse A few mmutes later Hans was back at the college campus He arrlved just IU tlme to see Chapman wln the race Some newspaper men rushed rlght by Chapman and greeted Hans Were you afrald of arrlvlng too late to save the man? How dld you know the Workman was lylng ln the snow?
