NEWPORT HIGH SLHOOL Well a guy s gotta eat lf he wants to hve hasn t he? Yeah I suppose so but sometimes I would llke to know lf you don t overdo It Well heres where I leave ya Red see ya ln the mornlng Okay so long Practlce started the next mght and contlnued untll the first game The bovs had practlced falthfully and were rewarded by wmnlng the game They contlnued to wln untll they had amassed a total of fourteen stralght but the next contest proved fatal Everythmg seemed to go wrong Then to top everythlng Red got sore and poked some guy on the opposlng team who had been shovmg hlm Naturally the referee dldn t waste any tlme ln put lng hlm out of the game They lost that game and afterwards IU the locker room of the gym they blamed Red He claimed lt wasn t all hls fault saymg that no one would pass to hlm and then that fellow had started shovmg so he just naturally poked hlm back On the nlght of the final game of the season the one that would declde ths conference champlonshlp between Lovell and the nelghbormg town of Jackson Red hadn tshown up and lt was almost game tlme Slnce the team had lost that fatal game thmgs had gone from bad to worse Every thlng seemed to go wrong The boys argued among themselves and seemed to lose all Interest ln basketball Everyone seemed to thlnk that Red was to blame for all the trouble They told hlm so and rode hxm about lt all the ture Somebody oughta sock hlm hard and drlve a llttle sense mto hls head Johnme was growlmg about Red as they changed up for the game He s always late or somethlng Red showed up Justm tlme for the game He got on the floor Just as the startlng wh1stle blew As usual the team dldn t work well together and at the end of the thlrd perlod the score stood Vxsxtors 30 Lovell 21 Durlng the short rest between perlods Red called the boys to g e t h e r Llsten fellows wlll you please? Red s VOICP had a pleadlng tone ln If we lose thls game I lose a chance to go to college If we wm I UDlVPFSlty whlch means my folks wlll be able to send me but lf we lose they won t be able You see I ve got that chance on my basketball ablllty Mr Hall fyou fellows all know hlm hes the rlch guy that llves on the hllll sald that he thmks Id make a swell player ln college but lf we lose thus game he says the deal s all off He s the one who IS gomg to pay half my expenses Maybe lt was all my fault that we lost that game that started us on our losmg streak but you know I ve got an awful temper andIJust lost my head when I got mad If you hadn t blamed me entlrely afterwards ld have been O K but you kept rldlng me about It and I kept gettlng madder all the tlme Now lets work together llke we used to I know lt IS a lot to ask you fellows after the way I ve acted but wlll you do lt? THE LIVE WIRE Here at the head of the lake we come upon a babbllng brook that trles wlth all its mlght to tell us how happy It feels danclng along IH the moonhght to enter the lake gracefully only to take lts Journey up agaln at the out let Deer rabblts foxes and all klnds of anlmals scamper away at our ap proach Blrds ln the trees scold us for wakmg them at such a late hour Everythlng seems so wonderful that lt IS hard to leave but we are spared from knowmg we wlll not return for a long tlme to thls paradise on earth Flfty years later we walk ove1 these same places agam The moon IS st1ll there but It can only shlne 1ts sllver rays on a deserted mudhole The once colorful lake has dlsappeared and wltn lt have gone all of nature s wlld hfe Mother Nature does her best to fill our achlng nostrlls wlth sweet per fume but It lS useless All her materlals for maklng thmgs beautlful have gone from th1s once gorgeous spot Oh humans why are you so ln human? You thlnk nothlng of beauty of nature of peace' You thlnk only of money money money' Nature means nothlng to you when money can be had by destroymg lt Very well go ahead and slaughter the beauty of our forest but remember that comlng generatlons wlll pay for lt and they ln turn w1ll hate you for carelessness We take a good look at our one tlme paradlse and leave It wlth ach1ng hearts It doesn t seem posslble that man could be so careless as to forget the beauty of nature that he once has a Carlle Brackett 37 A REAL FRIEND OVIING down the m IH street of Lovell a small New England town were two boys These two boys offered a strlklng contrast One of them Jack Rogers by name was a well bullt boy who stood slx feet three ln hls stocklng feet He was a well llked boy except for hls temper HIS one feature that he desplsed was a firery crop of red halr from whlch he got hls nlck name Red The other boy was Thomas J Jackson a perfect speclman of the proverblal bookworm horn rlmmed glasses and all stood five feet slx mches ln hxs stock mg feet These two boys were the captaln and the manager of the Lovell Hlgh School basketball team As they came to a corner the two boys parted Thomas golng up another street towards hls home and Red contlnu mg on hlS way down the street Sud denly Red saw hls best frlend blg Johnme Murphy Johnme s blg broad shouldered figure was framed ln the doorway of Wllllam s Ice Cream Parlor where he stood very lntent on a chocolate bar he was eatmg Red crossed the street and Jolned hlS pal Together they walked on down the street Say Johnme basketball practlce starts tomorrow mght Red sald very enthuslastlcally Yeah mumbled Johnme drawing forth from hls pocket another choco late bar All you do I9 eat Johnme? THE LIVE WIRE Yes Well for the love a mlke come on gang let's get to work on them guys We ll show them how to play basket ba l Do you mean 1tJohnn1e'? Sure I mean lt The boys all shook hands and then went on to the floor the old Lovell team full of flght wlth everyone pull 1ng together The score mounted unbelievably nothing could stop that team With only a few seconds to go Red took the ball off the opponent s backboard and passed It to Larry Johnson his teammate The team went on offense and took the ball down the floor Larry passed to Johnnle who shot The ball went through for a perfect basket Then came the tlp 05 but the final whistle blew before anything happened The score stood 54 to 34 None of the boys said a word as tney rested for the final struggle They would need thelr energy In the from Red Johnnie shot again The ball passed through the noop for a winning basket Later 1n the locker room Red was saying in a quaverlng voice If It hadn t been for you Johnnie we d have lost that game Oh yeah' Listen made a perfect pass to me I wouldn t so I guess you lf you hadn t have made any basket d1d your part ' Gee Idon t know you fellows after the way I ve acted Red said Aw I guess it was half our fault We Just thought we were mad at you It took something l1ke what you told how to thank us to wake us up to the fact that we re all pals was Johnnle s answer My d1spos1t1on got the better of me then but never agaln I ve learned my lesson was Reds reply They all laughed and next fall saw Red happlly on hls way to college E Weed 38 THE GLORY GRABBER ANS JOHNSON was fighting to control his temper Gen erally calm and easy going he could take a ioke but llstenlng to the boy opposite h1m was taking its toll of will power Roy Chapman had talked for five minutes Hls VOICE sounded like the rasp of a file and his words tumbled like static from a rad1o Only one person that Hans could number had a voice like that and he wasa barker at a side show To change the Hans spoke I suppose you are go mg to enter the Skl race cross coun try mumbled Hans You bet replied Roy You know of course that I won lt last year And he started on a rambllng dlscus sion of his skl ab1l1ty If you stick with me laughed Roy Ill slow down for you on the home stretch You know to g1ve the crowd a thrllll Well I hope lt s O K with you Good by Durlng dinner hour Hans focused his eyes on his plate and ate mechan lcally Directly opposite him sat Chapman who seemed to enjoy a huge Joke If Hans looked up from hls -l I 22 I 4- ll n 9 ll 1 ' an - 9 I ' 7 9 ' H . . . , . 9 - , , , . ll. as li 7 as as - - as ' ' If ' uf, as yy - ' 1 ' . ! ll 1 , . s .
