NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL 41-is-1 zfezaz y TTT'-If 1717 GRANDFATH ER S CHAIR UST to lntroduce myself I am an old chalr worn by my years of use It has been many a day slnce I have seen repalr or even a shlne To explaln myself I must first go back lnto my hlstory I was carefully made and put together by hand by an old man named Jackson Andrew Jackson known to many as Old Hickory I spent the early years of my l1fe1n acabln ln a l1ttle town up 1n the backwoods country of Carolma come a lawyer and study mllltary trammg I was moved to Tennessee When Andrew Jackson was elected Presldent I was moved wxth the fam 1ly to Washmgton As Mrs Jackson was a country woman and not accus tomed to the ways of the people at the Whlte House I was of much comfort to her durlng our stay at the Natlon s capltol After Andrew Jackson s death I was left to hls grandson a qulte well to do young farmer This Mr Jackson better known as Mr Jack always used me hlmself He never offered me to any of hls company Hls w1fe knowmg hls weakness for hls old chalr never used me elther M Jack would Slt ln me for hours rock mg hls llttle son who dled at the age of four As the years flew by I remember Mr Jack when he was about seventy two years old He became very fond of all the httle chlldren ln the town The chlldren regarded hlm as a Rlp Van W1nkle He told them storles and made boats and wooden soldlers for them There was one llt tle boy Dannle Green who seemed to llke Mr Jack a llttle better than the other chlldren dld He made reg ular VlSltS at the Jackson s each day He called Mr Jackson Grandpaw Jack He Sald hls father had been dead for some tlme and hls Mum was very SlCk One day Dannle came runnlng to Mr Jack Wlth tears stream lng down hls face and pleadlng Grandpaw Jack help me Don t let those men take me They took my Mum away' Dont let them take me They say they are gomg to put me ln an orphanage I don t want to g Please let me stay wlth you Please' Mr Jack s soft heart soon gave There there llttle Dannle h comforted don tcry I ll see what I can do Soon there was aloud rap on the door Mr Jack answered and some men followed hlm lnto the house They began talklng to Grandpaw Jack and Dannle Flnally Mr Jackson sald He can stay Wltll me I ll see that he gets hxs proper school 4 I 13 l 1- ! THE LIVE WIRE lng Dannle s tears vanlshed and a beamlng smlle covered hls face Although Mr Jack was not ln the need of work he was offered the Job of nlght watchman at the rallroad cros Slng He accepted the Job ln Splte of Mrs Jackson s protest He moved me to the shanty and kept me ln ln the day tlme and pulled me out agaln for hlS use at nlght At the end of each week Mr Jack went for the mall He always got the same klnd of an envelope from the rallroad com pany He would take somethlng from the envelope glance at It fold It up agaln and sllp It lnto a pocket ln my cushlon As the weeks grew by my llttle cushlon became stuffed and heavy One of the nlghts when Dannle was Jack he had been told that there was only one traln due that nlght and that that traln was due at ten fifteen If there should be another traln Mr Jack Sald he would have to swltch the tracks It was not long before Mr Jackson fell asleep When the traln whlstle blew It was almost ten Dannle could see plalnly now H could hear the traln more clearly now It was COmlUg the wrong way He trled to awaken Mr Jack but couldn t He grabbed the lantern ln one hand and opened the door Wlth the other As he stepped out lnto the cold the January wlnd whlstled ln by hlm Then the door shut and I could hear only Dannle s VOlC6 COmlUg over the drlfted snow Grandpaw Jack come qulck come But only IU valn the old man slept calmly on Dannle dldnt know what to do at first I could tell as hls VOICE cut the drlfted sllence Stop stop' Hls shrlll volce rang out All I could hear was the squeak lng of lron comlng together and then the brakeman s gruff VOICE You you llttle brat' Do you want to be k1lled'? he yelled at Dannle Then I heard Dannle say Grand paw Jack couldn t get out to swltch the tracks he fell asleep and I dldn t know how so I just had to stop you There IS another traln C0mlUg awful soon on thls track The men stamped lnto the cabln and began to shake Mr Jack Dannle peered thru the WlUd0W behlnd them The old guy s dead the brake man announced to the men who fol lowed hlm I could see blg tears swell ln Dannle s eyes Then hls face dlS3p never seen It slnce They searched everywhere for hlm but he was not to be found Mrs Jackson moved me back home She dled soon from a nervous shock Then I was stored wherel am today covered Wlth dust and forgotten I should llke to see Dannle and I know he would llke to see me lf he only knew Shhh I hear VOICES A young glrl and a young man are com lng upstalrs Vlfhy I m sure that IS Dannle He IS a young man now and how fine he looks' What a pretty glrl he has wlth hlml How I wlsh I could speak to hlm Iguess they must be looklng for somethlng They are com lng nearer now Well I guess they have glven up and are golng away Walt Margarlte Dannle sald ln a well mannered VOICE here It IS Oh lsn t It beautlful and that s your Grandfathers chalr she ex clalmed -li A ee I 14 l 4- ' 17 ' 7 ' U H ' ' ' . , . 64 ,, . . .
