NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL 41-is-1 zfezaz y TTT'-If 1717 GRANDFATH ER S CHAIR UST to lntroduce myself I am an old chalr worn by my years of use It has been many a day slnce I have seen repalr or even a shlne To explaln myself I must first go back lnto my hlstory I was carefully made and put together by hand by an old man named Jackson Andrew Jackson known to many as Old Hickory I spent the early years of my l1fe1n acabln ln a l1ttle town up 1n the backwoods country of Carolma come a lawyer and study mllltary trammg I was moved to Tennessee When Andrew Jackson was elected Presldent I was moved wxth the fam 1ly to Washmgton As Mrs Jackson was a country woman and not accus tomed to the ways of the people at the Whlte House I was of much comfort to her durlng our stay at the Natlon s capltol After Andrew Jackson s death I was left to hls grandson a qulte well to do young farmer This Mr Jackson better known as Mr Jack always used me hlmself He never offered me to any of hls company Hls w1fe knowmg hls weakness for hls old chalr never used me elther M Jack would Slt ln me for hours rock mg hls llttle son who dled at the age of four As the years flew by I remember Mr Jack when he was about seventy two years old He became very fond of all the httle chlldren ln the town The chlldren regarded hlm as a Rlp Van W1nkle He told them storles and made boats and wooden soldlers for them There was one llt tle boy Dannle Green who seemed to llke Mr Jack a llttle better than the other chlldren dld He made reg ular VlSltS at the Jackson s each day He called Mr Jackson Grandpaw Jack He Sald hls father had been dead for some tlme and hls Mum was very SlCk One day Dannle came runnlng to Mr Jack Wlth tears stream lng down hls face and pleadlng Grandpaw Jack help me Don t let those men take me They took my Mum away' Dont let them take me They say they are gomg to put me ln an orphanage I don t want to g Please let me stay wlth you Please' Mr Jack s soft heart soon gave There there llttle Dannle h comforted don tcry I ll see what I can do Soon there was aloud rap on the door Mr Jack answered and some men followed hlm lnto the house They began talklng to Grandpaw Jack and Dannle Flnally Mr Jackson sald He can stay Wltll me I ll see that he gets hxs proper school 4 I 13 l 1- !
