There are many dutles for us to carry out One of them IS ln defendlng our country Thls seems to be the first duty Wlth a large percentage of our people The only ldea that many of these people have of defendlng thelr country IS by the use of arms There are many ways of defendlng our country many means whlch we may use Two ways Whlch present to us these thlngs of most Importance are one defence by the use of arms the other obedlence to our natlon s laws To see a great army marchlng away to fight for 1tS country lS some thlng we may feel rlghtly proud of We see our army of brave resolute and determlned men wllllng to glV6 thelr llves for thelr country We have seen thlS loyalty and pa tFl0tlSm portrayed many tlmes IU the hlstory of our country once ln 1861 when thousands and thousands of brave men marched away to the South to fight for thelr country What was the motlve of their actlon'7 It was slmply that duty called them And agaln ln 1917 was lt not duty that caused many a man to leave home frlends and everythlng Whlch he loved to enter lnto a COHHICIZ the out come of whlch he knew nothlng? Some say What more can soldlers do for thelr country? But dld you ever more lmportant duty yet that of obedlence to laws? If these laws were obeyed as they should be there would be less need of warrlors and iightlng men If we wlsh to avold trouble Wlth other natlons we must obey lnterna tlonal law In deallng wlth natlons we should regard them as lndlvlduals We should try to do wlth them as we would have them do unto us Is thls not our duty? In the State of Malne we have laws enough but the trouble IS that what we have are not enforced In the school also there are a great many dutles for students Here agam the first one IS loyalty or obedlence to law The best show of loyalty IS ln school splrlt Each one should be more than loyal ln helplng carry out actlvltles Good sportsmanshlp IS ln another sense a speclman of loyalty So you future cltlzens of Amerlca conslder It your hlgh6St duty next to ' - 1 . , . . . - . - .A L.
