zfcz CII y TRAGEDY C-HE brlght red sun burned ltS way over the treetops dlsclos mg a scene of sleeping peace fulness Row on row of st1ll white tents were to be seen At last from one of them came a young man wlth a bugle The rat a tat tat acted as magic for flve minutes afterwards about one hundred of the young m1l1 tlamen stood ready for lnspectlon The officers passed l1ne after line of the boys commentlng here and there One of them stopped 1n front of Tom Phlllps Phlllps Yes Sir Sew a button on your coat And the officer moved on Phlllps stood ln the same position the sober GXDPGSSIOH of his face unchanglng Phlllps was known to the others as Sobersldes Not that he was sul len but lets go back to his earller 1 e Old Tom Philips and hls Wlfe llved small town namely Westbrook Their house was surprlslngly like the SIX others on that street Old Tom was a drlnklng man One day hlS mother tlred or fighting passed away leavlng thirteen year old Tom He lmmedlately ran away and Joining dlfferent organlzatlons finally Jolnlng the mllltla where he had been for the past three years Now let s come back to the present tlme Tom IS twenty three now Now fellows barked an officer I have an lmportant asslgnment for you Theres a mlll strlke on ln Westbrook and the mob IS trylng to burn the mill Company 149 will be ln charge You are all under strlct orders to shoot the minute anyone crosses the fence surroundlng the m1 Two hours later Philips had his company stationed around the mill The strlkers were bO0lUg and occa slonally throwlng bricks and stones Philips standing near the back of the mill heard a shout through the dark ness and then a thlck VOICE crying Come on men let s get the yellow won t work any more Come on Phlllps tightly holdlng hls gun rushed to the front where the greater part of the mob was Stay back you he yelled to the man who stood swaying on the oppo slte side of the fence We have orders to shoot lf you step foot over that fence Aw dry up the leader mumbled It was evldent that he was drunk Standing with hls back to the mill he yelled Come on you lets get at em As he swung hls leg over the fence two rlfles barked wlth Just a second ln between Philips being the first to shoot 9 U . .
