BASKETBALL The Newport High School team finished the most successful season in the school's history by win ning 21 and losing 5 with three of these losses handed them ln the tournament play In the county league play the Newport Grizzlies won six straight games and lost none by squeezing past Metaline Falls twice In the county tournament Newport took first place with four players named on the All Star souad They were Al Moeser, Glen Pete, Dick Yonck and Maurice Mintzer Then came the dis trict tournament and bad luck with it Al Moeser broke out with hives and wasn't able to play Ken ny Scott's arm swelled and Glen Pete injured the muscles in his back and was not able to perform up to par In spite of these injuries Newport beat the rugged Harrington During the season and tournament Newport scored an average of U8 l points a game compared to the opponents 35 lb a game In the individ ual scoring Glen Pete led the first five with 292 points followed by Maurice M ntzer with 253 points Al Moeser was next w1th 202 points A close race existed between two guards with Kenny Scott collecting a 181 points and beating Dick Yonck who had 178 points Kenny Scott and Dick Yonck are the only men returning from the first five but the reserves Kermit Pierson, Ray Johnson, Everett Eaton, Jim Brigham and Glen Pearce are expected to perform in capable style next year l squad the first night and then dropped the next two games.
