Dear Friends, Having the honor of being the President of the Class of 1987 of Newport High School has been both a challenging and memorable position. Although the past six years are ending, what was accomplished during those years will never be forgotten by myself or my classmates. Some of the more significant and fondest memories were the transformation of the cafeteria into a picturesque ballroom for our Sophomore Tea, the Junior-Senior Prom and after-prom party, the construction of our annual floats, and especially the experience and knowledge gained from our class unity, spirit, and friendship. Above all. 1 will cherish the diversity and individuality of my classmates, which enriched the lives of everyone, and also the support they offered to each other. My appreciation and thanks also to my classmates for their devoted service to our high school and to our community. Matthew S. Warne President. Class of 1987 Mathew S. Haines, C. Noll, M. List, K. Hall, B. Hetrick, G. Yates, and T. Shaffer led their class toward their final year. The anticipation of becoming “tomorrow’s leaders” is a common goal among all juniors. These students busied themselves with such things as making the Junior Senior prom a big success and trying out for the Junior Senior play. From Mrs. Willet’s term papers to Chemistry with Mr. James, the class of ’88 held strong. They are only one step away from the top. This year seems to be the most confusing yet is usually full of excitement. Between the dissecting course in Biology and learning how to prepare a speech in English, there was also the chaos of decorating for the Tea to keep these classmates busy. Finally, the beginning of the year transformed eighth graders into Freshmen, Freshman year is the year of change. It’s being able to choose your curriculum and participate in Varsity sports. Passing Algebra is a major task most want to accomplish and Mr. Molnar’s English class also proves to be a great learning experience. This group of young men and women are now halfway through high school and only a few short years away from the rest of their lives. Zeiders, S. O'Toole.: Row 2: S. Gardner, C. Dorman, and B. Horling led their class successfully through their second year. With one year behind them, the eighth graders appeared more relaxed and more aware. They had made it over that first giant step and were on their way to a successful high school career. Now that the class of ’91 is beginning to feel comfortable, they can concern themselves with their next obstacle. Big decisions had to be made on whether to take the academic or business course in their freshman year. RDmiNETRRTDN Mr. Jeffery Zimmerman Principal You've all heard it before, from parents, teachers, friends, and your high school principal — Your high school days are the best days of your life, make the most of them, they won't last forever.” I really believe that the Class of '87 listened and took to heart what was said. But didn’t it seem as though time stood still and the Sophomore Tea, Junior Prom, Senior Class Trip, and Graduation Day would never arrive? Well, at last, all of those special days are here — and gone! Now your days will change to the new reality of college, work, the armed services, or raising a family. The times to remember” for the Class of '87 are many and quite memorable. You’ve given Newport High School the best you had to give. As years go by I’m sure I'll hear about the rest of your lives. YOU’LL ALWAYS REMAIN IN OUR HEARTS 60 Each year students of Newport High School participate in various extra curricular activities. These activities are designed to expose students to learning outside the classroom and are a great compliment to the in-school educational experience. Numerous clubs are available for students to participate in, and the advantages each pupil gains from joining a particular organization are endless. Cooperating with fellow classmates and the process of making decisions are valuable learning tools. From groups related to sporting events to student government and musical productions, membership opportunities are of a great variety. The knowledge one attains and the memories he or she captures are great benefits achieved by participation in a school related club. 62 5TUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: S. Stebbins. Secretary; M. For the second consecutive year, the Buffaloes captured the Tri-Valley League Southern Division title. They achieved it with grace, style and apparent ease, as they dominated their opponents. Losing to State College in the Tri-Valley League Championship game by a close margin of 2-1 didn’t shatter the Buffalo pride. This group of players had the best season in Buffalo field hockey history, finishing with a glorious 11-1-1 record. Leadership, enthusiasm, confidence, and desire were the keys for this team. This year’s squad fought competitively in each contest, coming from behind in many games, which showed a determined, don’t-quit attitude. With the close-knit group of seniors Bob Huggins, Doug Myers, Chris Morgan, Matt Warne, and Steve Zeiders, the boys’ scores led to over 500 team points for the year. Senior Chris Morgan, a three-year starter with over 900 career points, was a first team All-League selection. Greg Weibley, a Junior, also proved his talent as he was a second team All-League selection. Looking forward to next year as a great JV team moves up, basketball will improve with determination and nard work. MANAGER J. Their personalities and baseball skills blended perfectly to form an outstanding team. The team, relying on its excellent control pitching, outstanding team defense, and consistent hitting, won the Tri-Valley League Southern Division Championship with a record of 15-1. Following the regular season, the Buffs entered District III play-offs in their quest for a District Championship and an appearance in State play-offs. A chance to try something new and enjoyable was given to the students of Newport High School this year. A law designed by the PIAA made it available for Greenwood and Newport athletes to join together in the specific sporting events offered at the different schools. In the fall, soccer was available for participants. Even though the turnout was small, hopes were not diminished and the ones that played gained a learning experience ana new friendships. With the spring, a large group of students joined the track team. Breaking school records and showing great talent, skill, and positive attitudes, Newport athletes contributed greatly to the team.
