It's being able to choose your curriculum and finally participate in varsity activities. It's waltzing in Mr. Molnar's room and star-gazing in the planetarium. It's the first step in senior high and a feeling of class unity, the likes of which has never been experienced before. Being able to prove yourself as maturing adults, but still keep a little bit of fantasy alive is what the freshmen experience is all about. The class of 83 knows it, and they show it! EIGHTH GRADE — CLASS OF 84 The eighth graders have finally established themselves among the hustle and bustle of high school life. To the upperclassmen they're a faithful admirer, to the seventh graders they're a valued guide, and to the teachers they're just a little easier to tolerate. The class of 84 knows where it's going and how to get there. They've got the knowledge and the experience. All they need now is the patience to last it out. But there's no doubt that patience will come: the class of 84 has definitely come of age. With no more recesses, but plenty of time for play, the seventh graders release their energy in their spirit of having a good time, no matter how much the teachers may disapprove. Seniors look and marvel, Was I really like that? , and seventh graders wonder back, Can I make it through six more years? Seventh grade is the turning point: half-child, halfadult, but all spirit. And that's what counts. — CLASS OF 85 Pictured above: Row 1: P. Miller, I. Strickland, B. Major,). O'Toole, M. Ehrhart, T. Heller, A. Sweiger. Row 2: L Galic, W. Wolfe, K. Kautz, A. Morrison, S. This year's celebration was extra important to our club. The chapter worked hard to earn money for a trip to Tennessee, to give a banquet in May, to present awards for achievement, and to complete all the projects done by individuals and groups. The parliamentary procedure team placed third in the region and consisted of Christ Hess, Richard Trout, Bob Charles, Terry Heller, Gary Bender, Calvin Fredricks, Keitha Brougher, and Roger Charles. Deb Walker was named the new chapter sweetheart. Congratulations on 40 years of success, F.F.A.! Officers Listed: Top right — Row 1: W. Wagner (adviser), B. Charles (vice-president), R. The Newport Cheerleaders have put a lot of time and practice in to prepare for games, pep rallies, bon fires, and pom pom routines. A lot has been required of the cheerleaders; but no matter what the circumstances have been, they are always there cheering the Buffalo team on and giving support. But, not only did we win more games than we lost, we developed into a class program. Class and pride which meant that on and off the field we acted like gentlemen. Pride, which meant that win or lose we left the other team's locker rooms dean and in good condition. We won the respect and friendship of many other players and coaches in the league and were complimented by referees for our positive attitude. Because of the damaged high school facilities, we had 100 football players —junior nigh through varsity — use locker room facilities aesigned tor 35 people. I feel proud of the fact that, in spite of the overcrowded conditions, there were no incidents and no damage. Varsity players voluntarily stayed each night to be sure everything was picked up before leaving. To me this says maturity. We've come a long way and this is just the beginning. Newport started off the season against a tough Mifflinburg team and the Buffs came up short by a score of (6-12). Pictured below: Row 1: T Miller, T Filler, S Dobyns, T. Blair, M. Stehloy. Newport faced Halifax the following week. Halifax had beaten the Buffs for the last eight years, but this year the Newport gridders topped the Wildcats (21-14). Newport trounced Tri-Valley (14-0). Newport's defense proved to be the key in the (13-11 victory over Millersburg. Newport had a four game winning streak, the longest in 21 years. Pictured top left: Row 1: T. Miller, M. Stehley, S. The Buffs' next opponent was arch-rival West Perry. The stage was set for the most important game of the season for both teams. Both teams were undefeated in league play, and the winner of this game would most likely go on to win the TVC crown. A record crowd of 4,000 fans showed up for the Homecoming shootout. It was a tough defensive game and the Buffs gave all they had. The Mustangs, however, edged by the Buffaloes (12-7). Newport was disheartened by the loss to West Perry and showed it as they were whipped by a tough Williams Valley team (28-12). Line Mountain clawed the Buffaloes (33-12) as the Buffs could muster very little offense or defense against the Eagles. Upper Dauphin arrived in Newport for the season finale. The Buffaloes' defense shut down the Trojans for a (6-0) victory. The Buffaloes finished the season with a 5-4 record, the first winning season in 22 years. 95 TWIN VAl 1st team 1st team 1st team 1st loam 2nd team ARS center Offensive C.iiouJ Offensive Halfback Defensive I ineman Offensive 1 ight Enc! ERB COACH'S CORNER This season's record equaled last year's, ending in a 500 season f5W-5L) for the Varsity. Overall, I was pleased witn the season but a bit disappointed that we didn't achieve our goal this year — which was to have a winning season. It seemed as if we surely would reach our goal but then lost a few very close games. The highlight of the season had to be the very last game against East Juniata. Our team played exceptionally well against one of the league's top teams and it seemed as though the game would go into overtime when E. J. scored with only 8 seconds remaining to win (1-0). It took a long time for us, coaches and teammates, to forget this game! However, I was pleased with the interest and enthusiasm displayed by the Newport Girls' Field Hockey Team — Happiness is Hockey. tsgisiii «■ ££ : iSS53 | 101 102 BOYS' BASKETBALL — YOUNG TEAM Coach's Comer The 1979-80 Boys' Basketball team, working under adverse conditions (22 away games), represented the school in fine fashion. Hopes were high for another successful season. Despite hard work and long hours the team just could not consistently put the ball in the basket. Finishing with a record of 6 wins and 14 losses is disappointing but many lessons are learned during the course of a season and hopefully these will help next year's team.
