Each makes his appearance in the mainstream of high school life, going through what every other seventh grader has before him. Searching diligently for English class or holding contests to see who can run down the hill the fastest without getting caught. Whatever the case, a seventh grader is a rarity that lasts only for a year. 24 Pictured Upper Right. Officers: Row I; Secretary, T. Houtz; President. H. Messimer; Vice President. C. Moore; Treasurer. With one year behind them, the eighth graders could now concern themselves with other matters such as choosing next year's courses. Big decisions had to be made on whether to take the Academic or Business course. Officers Pictured Above: Secretary. J. Kauffman; President. B. Kincr; Vice President. D. Kline; Treasurer. D. McGowan. They were soon to be straightened out after a few visits to Room 16. The climax for the Freshmen occurred when they won the spirit stick competing against the seventh and eighth graders. The Freshmen found themselves in the middle of the class ladder, not at the top and not at the bottom. In any case, they had made it through another year. Officers Pictured Above: President, B. The sophomore girls felt their first signs of growing pains as they each waited to be asked to the gala event of the year — The Tea Dance. 36 Pictured Lower Left: Row . M. Lesh. R. Kipp. S. Good. S. Meanwhile, they busied themselves with such things as making the Junior Senior Prom a big success. Everyone put on their Sunday best and smiled for Senior portraits. This year saw many goals fulfilled for the Newport chapter of the Future Farmers of America. A splendid greenhouse was finally completed after a few mishaps with the construction. The president, T. Casner, brought much due attention to his chapter by placing very high in tractor pulling contests. Other members won awards from soil conservation to small engine repair. All in all, this proved to be a very profitable and successful year for Newport’s future farmers. 66 NEWPORT Pictured Above: Seniors: C. Albright. B. Lenig. D. Gutshall, T. Dudley, G. Reed. R. Mr. La Force authored two musical themes, “Country Medley and “Star Wars, both of which were heard throughout the year. The marching season was highlighted by numerous parades and rainy football games. However, the largest accomplishment by the band came when they were selected to perform a pre-game show for the Phillies. The blue and white Newport uniforms were seen throughout Veterans Stadium. Albright 83 Despite Conditions, Under the leadership of Coach Steve Kuhn, the Newport Buffalo 1977-78 football squad once again hit the gridiron. The team was built on a foundation of faith, as the past records supplied little moral support. The team managed only two wins over East Juniata and Carson Long, but revealed many thrilling moments in their losses. Buffalo fans continued their unending support despite another dismal season. Promise and desire did pierce through the dense fog of disappointment in the campaign, and that desire will power next year’s football team. We Give Our A 86 and That’s What Counts in the End. A team headed by a host of senior players, displayed a genuine pride in winning. Each did her part in getting the ball down the field to score. The squad began to attract fans with their steady improvement during each game. The once infant team of the county entered into adolescence and was able to hold their own ground in each game. 90 To Show Pictured Upper Left: “Charge! Pictured Lower Left, Field Hockey: Row I; K. The team met little competitive opposition and climaxed the season with an unbelievable 20-5 slate. The Buffaloes, under the ever steady direction of Coach Linn, trampled virtually every opponent. However. Coach Linn's kindness kept the scores respectable, as not to embarrass opponents. The season was noted for the dunk.” which was performed by Butch” Strickland and mastered by Norm Fleagle. Brilliant play execution was seen throughout the season: we were fortunate to have witnessed this great group. Newport captured the Midstate Western Division for the second time. The wrestlers, this year, began their program to restore the sport to its former standing. They improved the record but failed to come close to the title in the faltering Midstate League. The league will probably fold before their next season and Newport is expected to rejoin the mighty Tri-Valley League. The going will be tough and the wrestling will be exhausting. The boys will have to be equal to their new task, and will no doubt conquer as they have done numerous times before. 100 And Build for Future Seasons Cedar Cliff Line Mountain 15 3 Past Juniata ml4 Mechanicsburg, 30 i 25 LeflgsttfSIn ■ W3 Mjllersburg ''I 41 ll 1 isi-Vall v 15 29 Williams Valley n 2 West Snyder 26 West Perry 35 20 East Pennsboro 29 27 pperDauphin 42 15 Halifax ■I 6 Juniata 32 22 Pictured Upper Left: Gel ready, here I come!” Pictured Lower Left: Row I; T. Despite optimistic thoughts for a brilliant season by the Buffalo baseball squad, their season quickly turned into one of disaster. Errors and batting slumps plagued the team from the start, and the Buffs never managed to recover. Newport’s baseball executions did improve in the latter stages of the season; however, the improvement was a case of too little too late. The season was not a total loss, as upcoming players gained playing time and the ability to refrain from being over-confident. 104 Too Little, Too Late Pictured Upper Left: “I’ve got to strike him out!” Pictured Lower Left: Team: Row I; J. From the beginning, the four seniors aided the younger athletes in their play and development of their talent. Carmen Cox and Barb Waldman provided excellent pitching throughout the season for Coach Margaret Tressler. Everyone on the team contributed to the offensive squad. The 1978 team started Newport’s revival in the game of softball without being over-confident. With the patience and talent of this team, Newport's softball program began to thrive and draw fan interest. Mr. Reighter headed the team, which won its only game by a forfeit. The team revealed a strong desire to win, but could not overcome their defensive woes. Even though suffering through losses, the players continued to exert effort and generate the will to win. In spite of the weather, there was still that enthusiasm that is associated with Homecoming. As the court got out of the cars and stood in the mud. everyone was waiting to hear the name of the 1977-78 Homecoming Queen. When that magic moment came, everyone knew that only one of these Senior girls would be called. Finally, with rain dripping off her umbrella. Tammy Salyards was crowned as this year’s queen. The production consisted of a review of Broadway show tunes presented in a children’s theme. The cast consisted of birds, mice, a frog, and a troupe of clowns. He jumped in and out of shadows leaving death threats all over the house and a trail of dead Shropshire relatives. Each detective went about in his own way to uncover the true identity of the phantom. It was a sudsy version of daytime soap operas colored with a touch of Agatha Christie mystery a typical whodunit. These scenes of hilarity lead up to an exciting climax where the real phantom took a step forward. The Prime Time Crime was an all around success under the veteran direction of Mr. Benjamin. Completing twelve years of school marks the beginning of a long road of mileposts that will be made in future life. The class of 1978 says good-bye to Newport High School with both regret and hope. Some regretting that they didn't use it to the fullest while others hoping that this will be the beginning of great things to come. Our work may have been unnoticed, but after all. we accounted for .005% of the Newport student body. Constantly striving to meet deadlines and preparing spaces for you in this yearbook. we became disappointed and sometimes frustrated. Somehow we overcame those inner emotions and developed a fine history of the 1977-78 school year in copy and in pictures. We now know that our work was finally noticed, and we are very proud of our accomplishment — this book. We are sure you will also cherish this Blunita.
