We climbed many hills which seemed like mountains. Our heights in achievement make our struggle to succeed worth every obstacle we had to overcome along the way. Though many think of this time as the sunset of the first ''day” of our life, we see it as the sunrise, with the darkest of night behind, and a new day ahead. L. Dobbs E. Dudley 17 J. Dudley T. Bohn Viva France” and Oui Madamoiselle From the land of wine and the latest fashions, came Jacques Czernik our exchange student from France. Jacques was most impressed by the interesting contrasts between his country and Newport. Among this favorite activities are playing tennis and riding his motorcyle. During his stay, Jacques was involved in weight lifting and the Jr. Sr. play. One of the highlights of his visit was a visit his family. They traveled to Greenwood where Jacques and his family were welcomed by the French class. He commented that he will always remember fondly his stay in Newport. 23 One Year Away From Senioritis One of the Class of 1978's main responsibilities this year is the Junior Senior Prom. The hours of work, toil, and enjoyment that are shared for this event makes it one of the highlights of the Junior year. Then the anticipation experienced to see if the event is a success is almost unbearable. Along with prom preparations on their agenda, Juniors look forward to the months ahead when they will be Seniors and leaders of the pack. The remarks are unanimous that the time arrives sooner then one thinks. Row 1: D. Wilson. G. Williams. T. Taft, B. Young, P. Treaster. Row 2: R. Turnbaugh, J. Templeton. B. Tomfordc, L. White. T. Even with all the events ahead, their potential for showing spirit and vitality was undescribable. Learning how to spell Sophomore and putting out their life savings for rings and class jackets were two new adjustments that had to be made for the class of 1979. One of the biggest projects is the Sophomore Tea and all its complications. As a result, a Sophomore year never seems to have an idle moment. Row 1: R. Gutshall, E. Freti, J. Geedy, S. Hoover. B. Yelling Battle Cry” and trying for the spirit stick were two reasons that made this year in their school lives so enjoyable. Being a ninth grader - pardon me - I mean Freshman, also meant an introduction to an unforgettable acquaintance - Mr. Molnar. To coin one female student’s phrase, being a Freshman meant being half way through high school and only a few short years away from the rest of our lives. Row 1: D. Peters, H. Miller. J. Niman, A. With the problem of the school's format out of the way, Eighth graders could concern themselves with other matters. Now the fact that there was 1 year behind them they felt their first touch of responsibility. This expressed itself by the fact that Eighth graders could select some of their next year courses. At this point in their lives they were right on the brim of young adults and bidding good-bye to the scared and silly years of the past. Row 1: G. Gantt. J. Houiz, J. Kipp. J. Jones, D. Johnson. D. The Class of 1982 experienced many new and different events. Though those first few days were rather nervous ones, the fact that they had friends there to share it with them made things a bit easier. Just the fact that there were now study halls and all new teachers made seventh grade much more enjoyable. Row 1: E. Wright. W. Siehley, L. Treaster, S. Singleton. H. Taft, L. Welfley, T. Zeigler. Things soon were back to normal, though, as Mr. Wagner sought ways to improve education and give each individual his understanding. Discipline, from the lavs to the cafeteria , was initiated and everyone was busy working to make this school year one to remember. Right: John J. Amsler. Supervising Principal. Though it is sometimes difficult for student and teacher to see eye to eye, they can find the solutions with a certain amount of effort and cooperation. We are also challenged to do our best, which inturn builds confidence and respect in ourselves and consideration for others as well. Yes, the faculty members play a major role in the happenings at Newport High School and as a result things turn out well because of it. A. Beaver W. Beaver R. Beers C. Benjamin 46 T. Berich D. Willet 55 9triving A good state of mind, practice, knowledge, stamina and more practice are the basic ingredients in order to strive effectively. The students of Newport High School know well of this desire of striving. They crave it and are not afraid to meet it face to face. This, in itself, is something to be proud of. Growing Efforts The 1977 NHS Varsity football team had the determination of a great squad. They had the blocking power and defensive ability that are essential for success. They seemed to have all the ingredients necessary for a winning season. Unfortunately, the scores never showed it. Players like John Troutman (J.T.) with his speed and endurance and Jay Wilson kept fighting even when the situation seemed hopeless. Don Barlup at center and Steve Cassell proved their ruggedness in times of peril. The season may not have been a winning one, but by giving it all they had surely made it worth their while. These were among the necessary skills the hockey team engaged in prior to and during the ’76 hockey season. The equipment included shin guards and mouth guards. It was very simple if you had no shinguards you walked off the field shinless because most of the games were rugged and fast. The girls first major victory was over West Snyder. The mark they made was a very positive drive for future teams’ success. On Opposite Page: Row 1: K. Campbell, H. Marks. D. Wilson. L. Mohler, P. Simon-celli, D. Fredrick. N. Stephens. Row 2: 8. It has always appeared that Newport High's enthusiasm for wrestling has never been shaken in the past, and this year was no exception. Like any sport, wrestling is one that teaches the athlete discipline because on several occassions as much as 10 pounds would have to be lost in 2 days. Our wrestlers came through once again by finishing first in the mid-state league for J.V. and 2nd for Varsity. They gave it all they had and that was all we could have asked. As we look back to this year's Varsity basketball performance, it will be remembered with complete satisfaction. The player's agility and skill became clear at the beginning of the season and their ambition continued right to the very end. It took a lot of hard work to keep up this momentum, but fortunately it paid off. The pay off showed itself by taking one look at the scores. During the last game of the season, the ball was dunked, which is something that has never happened at Newport before. Also the fact that the last score was 105-45 made this year's season one that won't soon be forgotten. Varsity: J. Black. L. White. R. Cams, N. Fleagle, M. Hultzapple, J. Briggs, D. Strickland, J. The fact that the majority of the starting five were sophomores showed promising success for the future. Coach James Flickinger's patience and guidance paid off by the show of the vast improvement in all the girls' individual skills and progress. Fortunately, the many long hours of practice were rewarded and as a result made the season worthwhile for all the members who participated. Bottom: Row 1: T. Campbell. M. Wertz. K. Campbell. K. Their potential as a team didn't show itself until about the third or fourth game. Though they were slow starting, they finished with power and completed the season with 7 wins and 6 losses. Coach Hultzapple and Coach Houtz are to be commended for their fine job in showing their dedication and leadership for the good of the team. Right: Coach Houtz, Coach Hultzapple. Below: Row 1: J. These girls display of enthusiasm and boisterous encouragement helped see our athletes through even in the toughest situations. Even though this past winter was one of the worst -the 1977 Cheerleading Squad was always on the scene when any event was taking place. Their presence was what made the events complete and it would have been a much rougher time for everyone without them. Below: D. Robinson. C. Machusick. A. Hostler, L. Boyer. C. Cox. K. Moorchead. M. Tradition is only effective if the participants believe in what they're doing. The school’s Tea, Prom, Homecoming, and pep rallys are symbols of living and how important it is to hold on to the good things of the past. 123 Homecoming: A Time of Remembrance Below: D. The way is now paved for productions of this type in the future. 126 The Stuck Pot Hydrogen Sulphide was the subject that caused much hilarity at a whose participants included the students from a girls’ school, Worthington Women's Academy, and a boys' school, Jason. Each girl tried to outdo the other by looking as ridiculous as possible. The Ultimate prize being the Stuck Pot. The whole menagerie of scenes provided for a most entertaining evening. 128 129 The World of Illusion Our school has had the privilege of hosting this fabulous show three years in a row, and each year it has become a greater success. The World of Illusion, sponsored by the Class of 1979, contained the nation's top acts including that of our very own Craig Wallis, member of the class of '77 and brainchild of the World of Illusion. Starry, Starry Night It was a starry, starry night for those who attended the Sophomore Tea this year. The evening was really nice outside and the decorations inside were even better. New Moon” was present for some sound and they really had their act together. The afternoon tea proved enjoyable as well so fortunately this event was once again successful. 131 We May Never Pass This Way Again Though the title for the Junior-Senior Prom suggested a point of no return,” for us, the actual chance of this happening is very doubtful. Newport High School was too much a part of our lives to forget it forever - even if we wanted to. The success of the prom itself was a sole example of this. Connie Culhane happily received the prom queen crown and her court was made up of Lori Mohler, Roxy Cox, Lesa Cox, and Lorrie Bream. All in all, it was really great for those who made an effort to participate. 132 133 We Did It Our Way This was the time we had all been waiting for. It was a time of sharing the utmost feelings of being a graduate and the sorrow of seeing many friends for the last time. Though the first couple of months seemed like an eternity, the last days passed like seconds. At last the time had arrived for our diplomas and that last handshake. We did things our way -we made lots of mistakes - we really loved it. Right: Valedictorian, K. Brookhart. Opposite page: Salutato-rian, D. Peters. 134 The puchasing of goods, the exchange of money, and the satisfaction of a task fully accomplished are all ingredients that form the word buying.” For some it is seen as an enjoyable pleasure, for others a ; compulsion that at times can not seem to be satisfied. One thing is for certain, buying in itself is a necessary evil” for all of us and how we handle it ' shows our awareness as an individual. i 137 Senior ri ANDERSON.
