BLUNITA NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL NEWPORT, PENNSYLVANIA A Salute BICENTENNIAL AMERICA - Our nation's 200th year of freedom and independence! Before us is the experience we have gained through our 200 years since the birth of our nation. We have obtained the privileges of a free people, under God, with the right to liberty, freedom, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. The way we use these privileges determines the strength of our nation, and the conduct therein. May this year be a celebration to all people, and may we show other nations that we care for one another. 2 To Our Heritage 3 Editors Editor-in-Chief - Pat Haines Editor-at-Large - Brent Yohn Photo Editor - Brian Shull Business Manager - Krista Clouse Copy Editor - Kathy Barrick An Editor - Melanie Taft 4 Table of Contents Faculty - Administration 6-17 Seniors 18-29 Underclassmen 30-51 Sports 52-93 Clubs - Activities 94-131 Advertisements 132-141 5 Faculty and Administration 7 Our Executive Personnel LAWRENCE M. And They Fought Hard, New faces brought bright hope into the eyes of Newport Football Fans. Steve Kuhn came to Newport with the ambition to build Newport's Football team into Newports winning team. With the beginning of the season the chances of improvement looked dim. But with each practice, the guys were steadily improving. The smash of the season came at Newport's Homecoming game as we blasted East Juniata off the field with a dynamite score of 38-6. With the following scores with Williams Valley and Line Mountain not being what they should have been, Newport came on strong with their final game of the season with a 22-3 victory over non-league Carson Long. Along with seniors like quarterback Ken Anderson, tailbacks Jeff Gibboney and halfback Howard Geiger, and leftguard Rick Schmoyer and tightend Dave Morris, the scores didn't always show that Newport had outrun and out played the opposing team. To top off the season, Jeff Gibboney was named to the Big 33 checklist. 55 But the Scores Did Not Show Their Ambitions and Vitality, Varsity N Tri Valley 8 Upper Dauphin 6 Millersburg 6 West PerryCpE- .______- ft 0 O 14 Or All the Work That Was Done Those Who Have Anxiety for Tomorrow Jr. High Football: Row I: L. to R. Gwinz. 60 Bruised Knees, The beginning of the season was hot, rough, and a losing battle. With more laps, exercises, and drills, the hockey team came up with an exciting victory with Lewistown. Junior Tammy Campbell and Freshman Denise Klingman each battled to make one goal to Lewistown's one. The only winning game ended in a 2-1 victory for Newport. The season was good experience, but the hockey players didn't have to be victorious to know the love of hockey. Row I: L. to R. B. Waldman, manager. K. Bake, D. Simoncelli, H. Marks, M. Hetrick, D. New head coach this year was Earl Hcisey, who was assisted by Ronald Beers, Paul Britcher, and Steve Kuhn. The Newport squad had a good showing at the Bermudian Springs Christmas Tournament as three matmen gained top honors. They were senior Rick Schmoyer, and juniors Kevin Smith and Jay Wilson. The team was under the leadership of Coach Galen Linn, and the power of the 5 starting seniors. The key behind the Buff’s success was team work with John McNaughton and Steve Walker both reaching the 1000 point mark and Howard Geiger also making it into the top 10 scoring bracket in the league. The play-makers for the team were the guards Brent Yohn and Doug Haines who got the offensive wheels turning. Captains: S. Walker. D. Haines. J. McNaughton. BASKETBALL Varsity: Coach Linn, B.
