Of course at the time they didn’t seem so little. Let's go back to first grade where it all began. We went into our first year not quite knowing what to expect. We hadn't planned on someone like Miss Tucker and those who had Miss Hoke considered themselves lucky. After making it through our first year most of us moved on to second grade and bigger and better things. Recess was still our best subject and we still weren't used to staying on our own side of the line on the playground . We never could understand why our teachers didn't approve of girls chasing boys. We made our way up to third grade and much to our dismay many of us discovered that there was no such person as Santa Clause, but yet he came to our rooms and handed out goodies. The next year we found ourselves in fourth grade and ran into Mrs. Beasom. More than a few people dared to tangle with her and suffered the consequences. We also put on the Wizard of Oz, we’re natural hams. Just when we thought we’d get away from fourth grade and Mrs. Beasom, we met up with fifth grade and Mrs. Eslinger and Mr. Walker. Each morning before classes, you could hear heavenly music coming from Mrs. Borst's and Mrs. Eslinger’s rooms. In sixth grade we were introduced to Mrs. Engle. Boy! could she ever swing a paddle! We went to the Shrine Circus for our class trip and we were the last class to go because of racial disturbances. We were anxious to get to seventh grade and away from the famous Kokey Special. We're finally in high school, well at least junior high. In seventh grade came lockers and our own keys! But we were still the underdog as we looked up to everyone else. We took a step up to eighth grade and welcomed the group of new kids that came that year. We'll always remember Mr. McLaughlin and all the times he hit George Dunn over the head for doing imitations. This was the year we went to Gettysburg with Mrs. Wertz, also, but as luck would have it, it rained. Freshmen! It sounded better than ninth graders. This is where we learned to waltz, courtesy of Mr. Molnar. We really got into grammar with him also. We'll always remember the time Mr. Buffenmyer kicked us out of the planetarium for misbehaving. We moved on to tenth grade and experienced what they call Driver's Education with Mr. Berich. We learned all about life and dissecting frogs from Mr. Beers. We're almost there! Along with eleventh grade came the return of Mr. Molnar for history. Some of us took Phys-Chem and became scientists under the direction of Mr. Leidy. The Spanish club went to Spain this year and all those who went had the time of their lives. Well, we finally made it. Now we're seniors. We got to select our own English Classes this year and had teachers such as Miss Sease, Miss Fogel and Mrs. Horn. We went to New York City for our class trip and were amazed at the size. It was nothing like Newport! We really had a good time for the short time we were there. We'll always remember that Friday night in the big city. Well, that covers it, all twelve years. We have set new traditions, revived old ones, and had a great time doing it. We, the class of 1975 say good-bye to Newport High. Class Poem Can you remember when . . . As Seniors we had a lot to learn, About how much we needed to earn; As Seniors we had a lot to remember, About twelve years of school beginning each September: All our friends we learned to like, And the first time we rode a bike; All our teachers we love and hate, and all the discussions on Watergate: All our classes that were interesting and boring, and all the kids sleeping and snoring; All the days we missed for fun, being late for class and having to run; Remembering the games we used to play, hoping maybe they will be back someday: Never forgetting our childhood lovers, getting books with ripped off covers: Remembering the place where we always ate, being made to eat everything on our plates; Remembering the times when we saw a bad movie, all the bands that were really groovy; Remembering the times we had at recess, and those stupid Iowa Skills tests; Remembering all the goods and bads of the past, and hoping the remembrance always lasts. 119 Jean Bohn Spiritual Guidance Religious service dedicated to the graduates . . . sponsored by the Newport Ministerium . . . thoughts for the future . . .
