CLASS HISTORY Time retreats to September, 1942, when the class of '48 made its first appearance at the corner of Fifth and Caroline Streets, a location destined to become most familiar to us all. Naturally, being our first year in the high school building, the seventh grade was uneventful except for the usual mixup in finding the proper rooms, and remembering all the teachers’ names. Time marches on and we find ourselves in eighth grade. This year we had Mrs. Jones for our instructor. Near the end of the year we took the county examinations. The American Legion Awards were given to Lois Stambaugh and Leonard Bria. After selecting our courses, we entered the ninth grade. Mrs. Soule and Mrs. Pollard were our supervisors. Many new students were added to our class this year from neighboring townships. This year marked the beginning of our participation in extra-curricular activities. Several of our classmates were on the J. V. basketball team, in intramural night, baseball, and football. In the fall of 1945, we assembled under the direction of Mr. Buffenmyer and Mr. Kerr. The biggest event of the year came to pass when we selected our class colors, maroon and white. 16 The 1948 Blunita CLASS HISTORY (Continued) One of the most important years in our education came when we entered the eleventh grade, for this was the year that we would sponsor our first dances, select class rings, take part in the Junior and Senior I’lay, and most important—have our Junior From. In order to raise money, we gave several dances, but probably the biggest event we gave was the “(lay Nineties Movie Revue” when several silent films were shown along with advertising slides of merchants in town. Piano music accompanied all the movies just as in the nineties. This year instead of a three-act play, two one-act plays were given, “Elmer” and “Where The Cross Is Made” under tin- supervision of Mrs. Soule and Mrs. Pollard. The next thing we did was select our class rings after a great deal of discussion. This was the first year we were on the Blue mid White staff and it was also the first year for Student Court. In the spring, our class took a trip to Gettysburg with our supervisor, Mr. Cressler, as our chaperon. Next came the biggest event of the year, our Junior Prom. During the entire year, we were looking forward to this. The night of the Prom the auditorium was decorated with two hundred-fifty balloons hanging from the ceiling, and at the end of the dance all were released to the floor. We put all our effort into making the Prom a success. We were very lucky to get Ivan Faux's orchestra with the drummer being Mr. Mease, one of our teachers. With that superior feeling, we returned to school as Seniors under the supervision of Mr. Kipp. In our first class meeting, we elected the following as officers of our class: president, James Geary; vice-president, Hill Dietz: secretary, Lois Stam-baugh; and treasurer, Connie Knisely. The Junior and Senior Play “Room Trouble” was a great success under the direction of Mrs. Soule and Mrs. Wolpert. Next in our curriculum was the selling of hats and pins to the students of the school. fur class was the first, for some time, to receive pennants, hats, and emblems for ourselves. This year the School Savings Plan was adopted in order to aid the student in forming the habit of saving regularly and spending wisely. We participated in the Hallowe'en parade and won first prize in the floats, ours being called “The Devil’s Playground.” Then came the final preparations of our yearbook which kept many Seniors very busy. With the cooperation of Miss McBride, our class sponsored a mid-nite movie which seemed very ap))ealing to the public. Following this came the Senior exams, the distribution of the Blunita, class night program, and the trip to Washington which was enjoyed by all. Hoping to have crossed the bay of success, the time has arrived for us to depart from dear old N. H. S. We hope we have been of benefit to our schoolmates and faculty as much as they have been to us. Entering a “new life,” we, the class of '48, will endeavor to preserve our class motto: “We have crossed the bay; the ocean lies before us. Our hope and wishes are listed below; Our joys, our sorrows, and our fears, Which we have accomplished in the past four years. Harry Aumon is one of the Romeos ’ of the class; We often wonder how he works so fast. Leonard Bria is a guy with plenty of expression; He hopes to make the Navy his profession. (filbert Campbell is one of Mr. Kerr’s students bright; His books and lessons are always right. Harold ( anipbcll, at all sports, is one of our stars; Also at class work, which he never mars. George Clay helps provide laws for the school; For over the Student Council he rules. Carl Clouser is a great admirer of P. D.. With this, he doesn’t agree with you and me. Camelia seems mighty lonely; Since the Navy has her one and only. Because of injuries. Bill Dietz is allowed no more; To raise our football and basketball score. Leland, a champ in a football game; With his sports has gained a lot of fame. C harles Kbersole is ambitious and husky; We’re sure his hinges will never be rusty. A newcomer to our class is Jean; She’s one of the nicest we’ve ever seen. Helen Fleisher thinks it would Ik mighty nice; To settle down and lx Walt’s little wife. Of the F. F. A.. Lester is a gallant member; Much to this world, he is sure to render. James Geary is the president of our class; He has done a lot for us in the past. Clyde Gessncr is for us this year a new lad; For his coining to Newport to graduate, we’re glad. Mary Goudy is a shapely stepper in our band line; That gal really can march and twirl to time. Even though Warren Huss is rather small. His ability and ideas are very tall. Lewis Kepncr will raise our food some day; For he’s a member of the F. F. A. Ada Kessler is a gal who is a lot of fun; She always has a smile for everyone. Helen Kessler was one of many who provided those delicious smells; Which floated from the Home Ec. room between bells. “Willie Kinzer is our class mathematician; He makes those figures stand up with recognition. Connie Knisely thinks our sailor-boy to be. Is the nicest guy she will ever see. Mary I.atchford is a brilliant typist of the “Blue and White; Watching her bang those keys is sheer delight. Thomas Leinaweaver is a very joyful and friendly lad; He is always happy and never sad. Wayne Long comes from a large farm; He is quiet but has plenty of charm. Our black-haired Jeannette comes from Route One; To all she is a lot of joy and fun. Chippy” Maxwell is the smallest of the boys; Wherever you find him. there’s plenty of noise. Helen Maxwell very seldom does speak; When with Mick,” I wonder if she’s so meek. Of Paula Mease, quite a few boys are fond. But it does no good, ’cause her heart’s with “Bond. Betty Miller makes frequent visits to the A. P.; I wonder if it is Art whom she goes to see. Galen Mutzabaugh is the pianist of the class; With his musical ability, lie’s bound to pass. We have an award-winning turkey farmer; Herbert Potter is also quite a charmer. “Dottie” Seeger wants to spend her remaining years; With “Willie guarding her from all her fears. Johnny Schreibcr, the football captain, is very shy. But still he never leaves a shapely gal go by. Minnie Shotsberger is a gal with ideas fine; She’s a swell girl out for a good time. One of Burdie’s Riders is Donald Shull; He is always at hand whenever you call. “Bobbie Shull” is a man of football; W hen he tackles them, they really do fall. Johnny Smith with girls has plenty of time; Anything that is exciting, to him is fine. June Smith is sure to make an excellent wife; Besides her cooking and sew ing ability. she‘s very nice. Lois Stambaugh is always at hand, W ith all her lessons at her command. No matter where Annie” Wilson may go. There happiness and joy are sure to flow. Vera Woods has finally settled down for good; I’m sure she’d say, yes” if only Red would. Arlene Zciders and a junior are an inseparable pair; There’s none quite like them to compare. Now it is time that we step ahead. N. H. S. which we’ve faithfully led. And leave next year’s Seniors here to debate. How to follow the footsteps of Class ’48. Schooldays do not last forever — and when they are past, memories are kept warm hy the photographs of friends and pals of the classroom and campus. Your chums should have a “personality portrait” of YOU, and you will prize one of theirs in return.
