Even though we were blind as to the life of a high school student, Mr. Cressler, our home room advisor, could see great |w ssibilities of leadership in our class. We were quite baffled by the number of the subjects thrust upon us and were much terrified by the thoughts of subjects we should have in the future, such as. Latin, physics, chemistry, and democracy. Apparently the course that everyone liked best was gym. Before we really knew what had happened we found ourselves in the eighth grade where we were again under the direction of Mr. Cressler, who had been promoted with us: but due to the nation’s circumstances we were very unfortunate in losing him near the end of the year. That year the American Legion awards were given to Marian Wilson and Richard Meredith. I laving passed our County Examinations we, along with a number of new students, journeyed on to our Freshman year under the direction of Mrs. Pollard and Mrs. Soule. That year we had the privilege of participating in the Minstrel Show under the supervision of Miss Hurchick. We were also active in intramural and other extra-curricular activities. After plunging through a torrent of examinations, we departed from the ninth grade and graciously accepted our annual vacation. When we set sail on our Sophomore year, we were more dignified and acquainted with high school life. Under the sagacious and faithful guidance of Mr. Kerr and Mr. Ruffenmyer we made further progress in the art of learning. Toward the end of year we were drowned in activities, Class colors, intramurals. Blue and White and the 0| eretta! After many heated arguments, we chose green and white as our class colors, and many of our members ] artici-pated in the operetta, “The Green Cheese” under the supervision of Miss Ross. During our sophomore year we lost Richard Bell, John Kapp, William Gabel and Richard Beatty to tlie Navy and Gary Gardner to the Army. In 1945 we entered the Junior Class ready for hard work. The Junior and Senior I ’lax “One Mad Night” directed by Mrs. Pollard and Mrs. Soule was a great success. To our great surprise Miss Robinson resigned at the end of the first semester, and Mr. Cressler, just back from the Navy, again pursued us. After a hearty discussion we finally selected our class rings. During the entire Junior year we built up our class treasury only to tear it down again to give the Seniors a “Prom. And what a Prom ! We put our entire effort into this affair and feel sure that this evening of dancing with music by Frank Taylor’s orchestra will remain in the memory of both the classes of '46 and ’47. With high spirits we returned to school as Seniors, this time under the supervision of Mr. Kipp. We welcomed to our class three exveterans, Robert Myers, Stanley Freeland, and Guy Rhykerd. This year instead of having the usual three-act play, we presented two one-act plays, “Elmer” and “Where the Cross Is Made.” The success of the plays was attributed to the ability of the participants under the leadership of Mrs. Pollard and Mrs. Soule. Other activities in our curriculum were the “Truth or Consequence program, the sale of school pins, the yearbook publication, the Music Concert and the County Music Festival. This year in order to give the students more self-government the Student Court was formed with Mr. Kipp and Mrs. Soule as advisors. Representatives from our class were Richard Meredith, president; Anna Makibbin. vice-president; and Arlene Bell. Now as we are about to leave dear N. II. S., we look hack over the years and recall many other events, both serious and humorous. We ho|K- we have profited by all of them and as we step out into the world we will endeavor to “Aim high and hold our aim.” 18 The 1947 Blunita lirst rmv Minnie Shotsberger, Dorothy Seeger, Anne W ilson. F () O T B A L L The football team did an excellent job this year despite the fact that they suffered several defeats. They had a hard-hitting line, a fast backfield, and enough fighting spirit to really deserve their nickname, “The Buffaloes.” Our varsity this year was composed of six seniors: Kenneth Arbogast (quarterback), Jesse Flurie (L. End), Donald Steinberg (R. End), Robert Flickinger (L. Tackle), David Leonard (Center), and Edgar Reisinger (Captain and R. Tackle). Two other seniors, Harry Sheaffer and Robert Gable, did a lot of playing and made excellent contributions to the team. To the squad next year, the Class of '47 wishes a successful and victorious season. 28 The 1947 Blunita I-eft to right—Mr. Kerr (coach). JUNIOR AND SENIOR PLAYS The program for the evenings of November 14-15 consisted of the presentation of a short comedy, “Elmer,” a band concert, and a one-act drama, “Where the Cross Is Made.” The cast of the play, “Elmer,” was directed by Mrs. Soule and consisted of a mixed group of Juniors and Seniors. The play centered around the Collier family, and the troubles they encountered. The manner in which they solved them created an hilarious hour for all. “Where the Cross Is Made, a one-act drama by Eugene O’Neill, was given by a cast contused entirely of Seniors under the direction of Mrs. Pollard. The setting of the play, a lonely ship's cabin by the sea, was made very realistic bv the efforts of the stage crew with lighting and sound effects. The casts, directors, and stage crews, all deserve laurels for the wonderful jobs they did to make this evening a success. “WHERE THE CROSS IS MADE” First row—Shirley Longs-derff, Dorothy Manning, Joyce Wilson.
