With a record of long, faithful and efficient service in Perry County schools. Miss Robinson retired with the respect, well wishes and affections of all those who had sat under her instruction, and of those who had served as instructors with her. Combining the substantial qualities of the older methods of education with the progressive elements of the new. Miss Robinson brought to her students the type of training that has always been essential in the development of fine American citizenship and in efficient preparation for living. At a dinner given in her honor January 3. the members of the Newport Teachers’ Association and the Board of Education presented her with a War Bond, taking at the same time the opportunity of extending to her their appreciation of her work in Newport and of wishing her continued good health and much happiness in the years ahead. In recognition of Miss Robinson's contribution to the cause of education in this community, the students of Newport High School affectionately dedicate this page of the Blunita to her. 8 The IV46 Blunita C L A S S E Paul F-'leishcr, Charles Arnold. CLASS POEM Here in a list we've placed them all So that you. the reader, may recall The class: their joys, their tears. Their fun and sorrows, through four years. To Charles Arnold, the class president. Our gratitude is gratefully sent. Carlton Bealor. a very witty lad. Came back to Newport to graduate: for that we are glad. Very short girls are Audrey and Helen. Why they are short, they aren't telling. George Fox drives quite a limousine: When he runs out of gas he uses kerosene. A pair of chums are Mary and Faye: They can be seen together almost every day. Eleanor Derr, that unconquerable girl. Leaves many a male in a whirl. To Editor Bob great credit is due. For the effort he made to please me and you Ivadell Carl, better known as Red . Is fond of the Merchant Marine, so it is said. Evelyn Crist, our soda jerker. Is quite an ambitious worker. Jack Wertz, whose clothes are sporty. Makes baskets that push the score over forty. Betty and Paul, that inseparable pair. There is no couple that to them can compare. The 1 46 Blunita 15 C LASS POEM Co-Captains of basketball are Carolyn and Pat. They surely know their business when it comes to that. Our tallest girl is Patty Mcloy. She wears a ring for a very nice boy. Our quietest girls. Mary, Lizabeth. and Faye, Seem as though they never have a thing to say. Ada. who is fond of Carlisle. Visits her home once in a while. Ruby. Margaret, and Jean. Always together, they are seen. Robert Campbell. Senior bell-boy. Into many classes brings great joy. Jerome. Walter. David, and Martin, members of the F.F.A., With all the studying they seem to be doing, will be great farmers some day. Marion Rheam. a very busy lass. Rates very high with the rest of her class. Elwcod Fortney, who's supposed to be shy. Never seems to pass a pretty girl by. Virginia, with all her things to do. Can always find time to write a letter or two. Jack Zeiders. captain of football. For a short blond, sure did fall. Anna Crist, whose heart's with the Air Corps. Does wonderful things for the basketball score. Leonard Miller makes a good chauffeur. For more information, ask Clarence Derr. Hattie Kochenderfer took Home Ec.. She'll learn to be a good cook, by heck. Mary and Ruth are always together. They're two who are friends in all kinds of weather. In his bucket of bolts Punchy will take in a whisk. Anyone who is willing to take the risk. Wagner and Shrawder. poets of the class, Have written these lines and hope they pass. And now you’ve met us. as we say good-bye. To things that made us laugh and cry. We hope the rest of the years may be As bright and happy as Forty-Six—A.D. 16 The 1 46 Blunita Class Let us turn back the pages of time and see what the years in Newport High recall to our memories. We were a very backward and frightened group that entered the seventh grade in September 1940. Many students were so reluctant that the teachers had to beg them to enter the portals of our beloved Alma Mater. Our instructor was Mr. Cressler. We entered the building with the proper amount of humility and many times we became lost in the maze of corridors, thus we were late for classes. The hearts of the girls quaked with the pleasure of speaking to a senior, while the mere mention of typing and trigonometry sent our aspirations soaring to the loftiest heights. Of course, the spell has long since been broken: our many trials and tribulations. combined with problems of physics. Latin, and French, and other subjects, have had their disillusioning effects. Apparently the course that everyone liked best was gymnastics. Before we really knew what had happened, we found ourselves in the eighth grade. This year we presented our first assembly. It was written for us by one of our own class members. Shirley Lewis. 7 hat year, the awards of the American Legion were given to Lura Wagner and Jack Zeiders. Having passed our county exams, we journeyed on to the Freshman year. Our home room teachers were Miss Newlin and Mrs. Pollard. Deciding whether we would be Academic or Commercial students was a task requiring much consideration. We participated in Intramural and other extra-curricular activities. Many new students were added to our class that year from neighboring townships. In the fall of 1947 we again assembled under the able direction of Mr. Buffenmyer and Mr. Kerr. Then came the great decision. to select our class colors. After much quibbling we selected Green and Gold. That year our football team ranked high in the Lower Susquehanna Conference. Five members of our class were represented on the Histolxj team. We became better acquainted with each other and were bound together by victories and defeats, and by studies and pleasures. Bill Manning and Carlton Bealor moved to Enola and Florida respectively. Many members of our class took part in the Minstrel Show under the direction of Miss Rita Hurchik. Feeling that we were now upperclassmen, we entered eleventh grade with Miss Robinson as our home room teacher. This year we held dances, which bolstered our class t treasury. One of the first attractions of that year was the Junior and Senior Play. M’Liss. My Western Miss with five Juniors in the play. After a hearty discussion we chose the Airman as our class ring. Next came what we thought to be the biggest event of the year, the Junior and Senior Prom. We surprised the seniors with the excellence of our entertainment. Music for the Prom was furnished by Maynard McKiss-ick and his orchestra. That year Stanley Freeland entered the Navy and Lawrence Page the Army. Now we had come to the portal which might lead to success or failure. Our last year in Newport High has been one of com bined study and pleasure. We have grown beyond the grind of the Junior year into a larger freedom of the Senior year. The Faculty advisor for the Senior year is Mr. Kipp. With the advice of Mr. Kipp, we have come far in accomplishing our future goal. About this time came the Junior and Senior Play. One Mad Night”, under the direction of Mrs. Pollard and Mrs. Soule. The play was credited to the ability of the participants. Next in our curriculum were the Senior exams. the appearance of the yearbook, class night exercises, and the class trip to Washington which was enjoyed by all. Now comes the breaking up and final separation of the class of 46 . 7'he lessons that we have learned together will never be forgotten and may we all endeavor to follow through our life as we have through our school course, our motto: Forward ever: backward never.” The JQ46 ftlunita 17 SENIOR HOROSCOPE Name Course Born Pei Saying Hobby Ambition Ben Arnold Agriculture ••Carl” Bealor Academic “Pip Bitting Commercial “Bob Campbell Commercial “Ivy Carl Commercial “Jean Crissman Commercial “Margie Crissman Commercial “Anna Crist Commercial “Evie Crist Home Ec. ’ Sonny Derr Commercial “Eleanor Derr Academic “Dick Fleishcr Agriculture “Kitty Flickinger Academic “Blondie Fortney Academic “Foxie Fox Academic Professor Goetz Academic “Sue Kessler Commercial “Hatpin Kochenderfer Home Ec. Blue and White Attempting to present to our readers a fair idea of our achievements in school, we have published, as in preceding years. The Blue and White. This year, with the advice and guidance of Mrs. Pollard, our English instructor, the staff has strived to improve The Blue and While. This paper of Newport High School is printed and mimeographed monthly within the school. The Editor-in-chief is Robert Goetz. Marian Rheam is the Assistant Editor. The editorial staff consists of sixteen members chosen from the Senior Class. They are assisted by ten reporters chosen from the Junior Class. The business staff, headed by Ivadell Carl, is composed of seven members of the Senior Class. Many of the articles written in Blue and White are contributions from the various English classes. On the editorial pages students give their opinions and outlooks on life. The Snooper and Chit-Chat” bring you in contact with the latest school romances, while Wit and Wisdom furnish laughs through wisecracks and boners from the classes. The members of the faculty have also expressed their view points in the columns of our school paper. Because Newport excels in the World of Sports, she gives particular attention to this column. In the column Who's Who , members of the Senior Class are described: while The Alumni' tells the events of the former graduates of Newport High School. Class News , which stresses the daily incidents, is one of the most widely read articles. Having installed a Home Economics Department in our school this year, more news has been furnished for our paper. Other popular articles are: Mind Your Manners . News of the Future Farmers of America , Musical Activities and other interesting incidents that have occurred during the school year. The Blue and White is supervised by Mrs. Pollard and Mr. Kerr, members of the faculty, and has become a popular and widely read school paper. The action takes place in “One Mad Night , and what a crazy night it is! Don Cutter. (Bob Goetz) a playwright, accompanied by Wing. (Ben Mehrling). his proverb-quoting Chinese valet, goes to the Cutter mansion, a lonely house in the hills, to complete his latest play in peace and quiet. 1 he house has been deserted for years, a series of mysterious murders having given it the reputation of being haunted. Imagine Don s astonishment when he finds the house tenanted by a number of very strange people, including “John Alden (Jim Jnes). “Priscilla” (Marian Rheam), “Mr. Hyde (Jack Wertz), “Lady Macbeth (Ivadell Carl. Eleanor Derr). They are lunatics, under the care of Dr. Bunn (Richard Meredith), and Mrs. Kluck (Lura Wagner), whose home nearby has burned down. They are really quite harmless, but Don doesn't know this—and the audience had a riotous time at his discomfiture. Among the inmates is Lucille (Joyce Wilson), a beautiful girl with an amazing story of persecution and intrigue. Like a true Lochinvar. Don is just about to ride to her rescue when his fiancee. Gertrude Finch (Virginia Stydinger) and her mother. Mrs. T. Ashington Finch (Patty Meloy) put in their appearance with their maid. Depression (Anna Makibbin)—one of the funniest colored characters in years. From this point, everything happens, including talking ghosts, screaming women, disappearing guests, and for a climax, the appearance of a dishonest lawyer (Donald Steinberg), and an escaped murderer (Robert Clouser). The public agreed that it was one of the most exciting and thrilling plays that Newport has witnessed in many years. The cast greatly enjoyed preparing this play and benefited immensely from the training. Soon you anil your classmates will take different roads, and it may he many years before some of you may meet again. Schooldays do not last forever—and when they are past, memories are kept warm by the photographs of friends and pals of the classroom and campus. Your chums should have a “personality portrait” of YOU, and you will prize one of theirs in return. In a year or so you will he glad you took this means of keeping alive the memories of your schooldays. And the home folks will always cherish a portrait of the “turning point” in your life.
