mddnaia The Eighth Grade Cardinals, coached by Mr. White, concluded a successful season by defeating Toledo three times, and Waldport twice. Their only loss was to McMinnville. High scorers tor Newport were George Erickson with fifty-one points and lim Hughes with thirty-six points. This year's squad consisted of Guards: Phillip Barnette, Charles Hill, Tom Applegarth, Bill Francis, and Danny Hall, Centers: George Erickson and Iirn Hughes, and Forwards: Grant Watkinson, Dale Grogan, Mike Far- well, and Iim Church. Managers were David Smith and Vernon Passmore. The girls' volleyball team, coached by Miss Heinke, played only intra- school games among themselves and with the seventh grade. The Aces check a shot. Larr uards Leroy Y Early in December five intramural basketball teams, under the direction of IV Basketball Coach Morrow, began a double round-robin tournament. The only eligibility requirement for students who competed were that team members were not playing in inter- school games. Organization tor most teams began when five boys met and elected a team captain, selected a name, and registered as a team for tournament play. Teams which competed this year were Pakulak's Globe Trotters tSeniorsl, Sny- der's Flying Aces lSeniorsl, Hart's Lone- ly Hearts lluniorsl, Foote's Sophomores, and Aker's Sophomores. At the end of the first round ot play, a three-way tie existed between the Globe Trotters, Flying Aces, and Lonely Hearts, each with one loss, All games were played during long noon hours on Wednesdays.
