Other elective positions were those of the five yell leaders, who worked with the twenty-five member pep club. Six librarians, two selected from volunteers within each room, worked with Mrs. Schaeffer. The chorus of thirty students, who were se- lected during fall try-outs , sang for the Christ- mas program at Lincoln. Second semester president lim Hughes not only represented his class at the NHS student council as did his predecessor, but also organ- The sweethearts' post office. ized spring projects such as the March-of-Dimes talent show which netted approximately one hundred dollars. Chairman Karen Moe worked with both seventh and eighth grade students who provided the talent. Carolyn Hanner Won special honors for New- port when she received a gold cup for best spell- er of the county in her division. On February 14 students collected valentines at the sweethearts' post office in Mrs. GrisWald's room. Trips included the March visit to the science exposition at Corvallis and a tour during May of the capitol and other state buildings in Salem. Ucmce After game dances offered an opportu- nity not only for fun but also for money making. The various organizations and classes sponsored the dances after home games on Friday nights. New records were purchased by the Student Council after a student poll determined the most popular selections. Noon dances on Tuesday and Thursday noons offered relaxation from classwork.
