The neat, well-kept lawns are a favorite noon-time retreat. The modern social hall, the pool, and the athletic fields all are part of the environmental influences. It is true that here at Harbor natural beauty is combined with man's design of structure to create an inspirational setting for learning. Social life at Harbor will remain vivid in the minds of all students for years to come. In social activities there can be found a diversion from the academic functions, and they are many and often. As the scene of innumer- able parties, dances and intellectual gatherings, the social hall plays a signifi- cant role in the lives of students and faculty. Campus organizations, sponsor- ing frequent parties to launch or conclude a particular endeavor, or for mere gregariousness, contribute to the social atmosphere. A perfectionist in performing his duties, he has been the guiding hand from the school's humble beginning to its full develop- ment today. Every Harbor student takes pride in the top flight faculty, a modern, extensive plant, the enthusiastic student body, and the very successful student government. We pay tribute to this man who shaped these qualities into an institution to be valued. Every graduate who looks back on the education which built his success feels a deep grati- tude for the opportunities fostered by our principal, Mr. Davidson. MR. SIDNEY DAVIDSON MR. JOSEPH HAMBLET In my lifetime | have traversed some of the largest and most. famous bridges in the world, including the Brooklyn Bridge, the Niagara River Bridge and bridges across the Mississippi River and San Francisco Bay. In reflection the most significant bridge of all is that which joins in time the past with the present. It has been a very great privileg e to have been associated with Harbor High from the time when it was only an idea up to its magnificent present. During these twenty five years many thousands of boys and girls have received benefits from this fine school and we of the faculty have received inspiration from our contact with these young people. You of the class of 1955, nearly three hundred strong, have made a splendid record. | am proud of you and confident that you will prove yourselves worthy of the education which has been given you. My best wishes— Sidney H. Davidson Mrs. Fay Harbison Mr. Robert Magnusson i e Judge Donald Dodge Mr. Leslie Steffensen Mrs. Ronald Barlow Vice-Principal With genuine enthusiasm, Mr. Hamblet supports and guides our student life and activities. His sense of humor, fairness, and friendly direction make our years’ span at Harbor High more successful. Dean of Girls Mrs. Harbison has successfully built a strong bridge of understanding between the students and the administration. In matters both personal and concerning school or social activities she has given sympathetic and tactful consideration, to those who have needed it. Counsellor In his capacity as counsellor, many have come to know and appreciate Mr. Robert Magnusson as the keystone in adapting students to high school life. Through him can be found the formula for future suc- Css. The Board of Trustees The Board of Trustees skillfully and wisely acts as the architect and designer of the school. With planning board and T-square the members plot the future. Sin- cere concern for the students is the moti- vation for the positive steps taken by the board throughout each year. Tony Palaferri, an honest and conscientious of- ficer, is well known for his friendly and jovial nature and for his willingness to accept responsi- bility and accomplish the task at hand. As head of the Student Court and a member of the Board of Control, Glenn Thomas is a capable and hard-working leader, known for his fairness and sense of humor. Tony Palaferri Glenn Thomas ee HIS year's senior class has made an’ outstanding record of accom- plishments in service and_ spirit. Always working as a unit, this Twenty-fifth gradua- ting class has left behind a lasting impres- sion with its courageous innovations and successful ventures. Of special note is the size and variety of developments in con- tract with the first graduating class of 1930. The years have seen a vast differ- ence in the wide’ range of curricular and extra-curricular activities, the greatly en- larged faculty, and the growing plant. But to the first class and its successors, a debt is owed, for the advantages enjoyed today are a culmination of the efforts of each class to the system. The contributions of the silver anniversary class have added much to the. future benefits, and will be looked upon with as much favor by the Fiftieth or Seventy-fifth classes as we look back on the first. This is indeed a proud heritage to pass from generation to gen- eration. They have developed indi- vidual abilities and are becoming better known as mature citizens of the community. Within the school, the class prepared its treasury for the big event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. Cloak and dagger secrecy prevailed behind closed doors and the dance became a reality. ee —— Ee The completion of the tower clock was made possible by a gift from the Junior class to fulfill the efforts and dreams of four preceding classes. 4 TSS E INE TREE UE HORN TREAT A Back: G. Its primary purpose is keeping the desires of the students before the attention of our leaders. The members are elected from each fourth period class, thus equal representation is achieved in our democratic form of government. L Volume XXV Number 25 Newport Harbor Union High School Newport Beach, California, June 17, 1955 88 Editors The tasks of the editors each include a different phase of the Beacon. Editor-in-Chief Marilyn Ingmundson is the over-all su- pervisor of the paper. She has the responsibility of the most im- portant part of the paper, page one, including assignments and make-up. In addition, she deter- mines the editorial policy of the paper, and writes an informative column, “Pipings from the Bo’- sun.” Wrapping up pages two and three each issue are the Feature Editors Ann Stewart and Jim Everson. Besides doing the make- up, they dole out the assign- ments for their pages and write human interest columns, editor- ials, and features. Don Dolbee can be seen at al- most every sports event gather- ing up the facts for the Beacon sports section. News of other schools is al- ways of interest. It is Joan Bur- back’s job as exchange editor to correspond with other schools, and to trade journalistic efforts. Miss Dorothea Hilliard Advisor Also, as business manager she is in charge of all advertising, and “dummies” the ads for each issue. Performing many last minute tasks for the editors, and helping to put the paper “to bed” is as- sistant editor Sharon Crowl. Sharon also is noted for her out- standing work in news coverage. Advisor Miss Dorothea Hilliard per- forms invaluable service as she guides and directs the activities of her journalism class. With sound advice she lends her able assistance to young journalists. Reporters With a clean sweep of the news, Harbor’s’ super-snoopers are found in all corners of the campus, first period and after school, in search of scoops for the Beacon. The rush and bustle hit a fever pitch as clattering typewriters pound out the news for the Thursday deadline. The staff takes a quick breathing spell, and then plunges with re- newed vigor into the next issue. Before the production, or finale, there are weeks of exacting training in elocution, stage direction, acting and stagecraft in the drama classes.
