EPHEMERA Newnan And Central High Schools Newnan, Georgia ssiai ii mmmyb 1 wmmii m. v 'om'tii. mm if mum |nj «fi CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, NEWNAN, GEORGIA The floors are all polished and shiny brown The windows are finely clear And the clocks all run on time — In an empty school time runs . . . people come inside to sweep and hone and make ready Then teachers move in and clutter their desks with knowledge and textbooks or maybe just sit on them to speak to wise poems or the State Department while they bang their heels and we listen with students (clangs and brains) Time runs . . . For nine months this is the students' world of grey blackboards, generous windows, bent forks, scuffy floors, and textbooks, desks with bubble gum wrappers and pictures of cars carefully drawn on yesterday's algebra homework Time runs . . . And the classrooms breathe and smell of ink and chalk (crushed on the floor by the stool and podium) and of tests freshly mimeographed. Time runs . . . with (football) games — hollering and homecoming — and a senior crying a little because it went by so fast basketball season . . . Christmas holidays . . . tests over all and we worry and laugh and eat our lunch and doodle in the margins of a notebook and wait for the next holiday . . . Time runs . . . and seasons change, leaves have fallen, rain has frozen itself into crystal sleeves on grass and weeds by the sidewalk Until spring and sandals and daffodils It is past time to begin thinking of college applications It is time for a senior class to leave and the juniors to become important and for sophomores to be ignorant still of what it's all about the freshmen grow an inch or two and find out who is who and in which room he lives Time runs . . . school years are short-lived and changing . . . For every year there have been the years before — all the same really, but smiles belong to different people and hems go up or come back down and it's all in this EPHEMERA . . . Time runs until it is time to repolish the floors for our return only to be captured immortal on the pages of a book . . . changing . . . short-lived while time runs . . The Outstanding Teacher Award was initiated during the 1966-67 school year, and the follow- ing faculty members have been honored by its receipt: 1966- 67 — Miss Sally Bowen 1967- 68 — Mr. Richard Smith 1968- 69 - Mr. Allyn Bell 1969- 70 — Mrs. Ruth Crotts Another presentation was made to Mrs. Marjorie Hatchett, who has rendered many years of dedicated service to Newnan High School. The speaker for the banquet was the Reverend John Minter, pastor of First United Methodist Church. Mr. Minter gave a very interesting and entertaining talk centered around Valentine's Day. The Parent-Teacher-Student Leader Banquet is given annually by the Key Club in an effort to express its sincere gratitude to those who make sig- nificant contributions to the school during that year. This year ten girls were chosen to represent the spirit of their classes on this day. At the pep rallies at Central High School and Newnan High School, the girls were introduced to the student bodies of both schools. That night at the football game, the girls were introduced to the fans, and the homecoming queen was announced . . . MISS HOMECOMING OF 1970 . . . KATHY NORMAN Miss Ephemera of 1971 is . . . judy Jackson! These words closed the Miss Ephemera contest of 1971. The contest, sponsored by the Newnan High School annual staff, was held for girls in both Newnan and Central High Schools. All girls who wished to participate submitted their names and were judged in a preliminary contest by a panel of four judges. Twenty girls, five from each class, were chosen to take part in the Miss Ephemera con- test. After much preliminary work, the contest was held January 21 at eight o'clock in the Newnan High School auditorium. Everyone was invited to attend. A different panel of six judges contemplated as the twenty girls walked across the stage. Breaths were held as the judges made their final decisions. As they were deliberating, Melvin Bolton, President of NHS Student Government Association, said the new name of the annual, submitted by Melissa Lang, is the Ephemera. Excitement mounted as Melvin announced the judges' final decisions. The girls were presented roses and charms as momentos of this occasion. Each year the top academic senior in each accredited Georgia high school is named the High School STAR Student. The High School STAR Students com- pete for the School System STAR Awards; System STAR Students compete for the Congressional District STAR Awards; the District STAR Students compete for the State STAR Awards. STAR Students select the STAR Teachers, who share the recognition accorded the STAR Students. The program culminates at the State STAR Banquet held annually in the spring. To qualify to become a STAR Student, a student must be unmarried, a regu- larly enrolled senior in an accredited public or private high school in Georgia and must have a scholastic average for the first semester of the senior year in the upper ten percent of his class. The student must take the College Board Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) when given in November or December. The student's scores for each part of the SAT must be at least equal the lat- est available national average (Verbal - 391 and Math - 402). In each high school the qualified student who receives the highest score on the SAT will be the high school STAR Student. School system STAR Students, Congressional District STAR Students and the State STAR Student will be named from the high school winners solely on the basis of the highest SAT scores. STAR Teachers are selected by STAR Students. Each STAR Student selects an elementary or high school teacher who has taught him or is now teaching him in a classroom subject and who, in the student's opinion, has made the most outstanding contribution to his scholastic achievement. The teacher must be a faculty member of a public or private accredited Georgia school when se- lected. If a teacher is now teaching in a Georgia college or junior college, or is a librarian, counselor, principal, superintendent, or relative of the STAR Student, he may not be selected as the STAR Teacher unless at some time in the past he has taught the student in a classroom subject in Georgia. 200 NEWNAN HIGH SCHOOL'S AND COWETA COUNTY'S STAR STUDENT AND STAR TEACHER RANDY MOORE, STAR Student of Newnan High School and Coweta County, chose as his STAR Teacher MR. The con- test was open to girls between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one. Girls be- tween fourteen and sixteen were in the junior division; girls between seventeen and twenty-one, the senior division. Since the contest is primarily to promote wool, the fabric used to sew the apparel for the contest had to be at least ninty-five per cent wool. A girl competed first in the district competition, which was held in Monroe, Georgia, this year. The district winner entered the state competition. Gail was district winner and state runner-up. In the state competition, one winner was named in each division to go to the southern regional contest. From the southern re- gionaTcontest, a winner went to a na- tional competition in Nevada, and the national winner was awarded a trip to Europe. The contest is sponsored each year by the American Wool Council, and the judges this year were clothing experts from various colleges throughout Geor- gia. GAIL JACKSON in the ensemble she made for the contest. PRESIDENTIAL CLASSROOM REPRESENTATIVE FROM NEWNAN HIGH SCHOOL A Presidential Classroom for Young Americans is a program involving three hundred and fifty students during each of six classrooms. Students from the fifty states as well as territories and dependent high schools abroad meet for a week in Washington, D.C. in order to obtain a more personal knowledge of American government and politics. Melissa was chosen by Mrs. Parrott to attend the Classroom due to her interest in social science and politics. MELISSA LANG 203 Newnan High School's 1971 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow is senior Melissa Horsley. Selected for her performance in a written knowledge and attitude exami- nation administered to senior girls on December 1, Mel- issa will receive a specially designed award from General Mills, sponsor of the annual education program. Addi- tionally, she is now eligible for state and national honors, including one of 102 college scholarships totaling $110,000. The national first-place winner - the 1971 Betty Crocker All-American Homemaker of Tomorrow — will receive a $5,000 educational grant. She will be chosen this spring from 51 Homemakers of Tomorrow represent- ing each state and the District of Columbia at the close of an expense-paid educational tour of Washington, D.C., and Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. Each of the state winners will be accompanied on this tour by a school advisor. Second-, third-, and fourth-place national win- ners will be awarded $4,000, $3,000, and $2,000 scholar- ships; the other state winners will receive $1,500 grants. State judging centers on scores of school winners in the December 1 test, with personal observation and in- terviews during the tour added factors in national selec- tions. Second-ranking Homemakers of Tomorrow in each state receive $500 educational grants. The school of every $1,500 scholarship winner receives a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica from Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. All judging and selection of winners is done by Science Research Associates, Chicago, which also constructed and graded the written examination. The Betty Crocker Search for the American Homemaker of Tomorrow is the only national scholarship program ex- clusively for high school senior girls. Begun by General Mills in the 1954-55 school year to emphasize the impor- tance of homemaking as a career, it will, with the 1971 grants, have awarded more than one and three-fourths million dollars in scholarships during its seventeen year history. BETTY CROCKER HOMEMAKER AWARD WINNER MELISSA HORSLEY FBLA SPELLING CONTEST WINNERS DEBORAH JACKSON, VICKIE MORROW, and DONNA STOREY won first place in District 4 FBLA mini-convention elimination spelling contest Saturday, March 13, 1971, at Canton High School, Canton, Georgia.
