NEWNAN HIGH SCHOOL 2 NEWNAN, GEORGIA 3 Even our times of relaxation were affected as we were made more aware of the worth of the lasting friendships that were being formed. lAWV' NOVE iT i£turruuAc 7 he BnMMUMfTV AT NEWNAN HIGH WE ARE THE STUDENTS, THE SPECT 12 'ORS, THE PARTICIPANTS, THE INVOLVED, AND THE LEARNERS . . . 13 A SPECIAL TRIBUTE Mr. Evans with Dr. Robert Lee, Superintendent of Coweta County Schools Mr. Evans with the COWETA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION Seated: Dr. Robert Lee; Mrs. Lavane Leach, Secretary to the Chairman of the Board; Mr. O. P. Evans Standing: Carl Williams, Lisle Superintendent and Board of Education; Mr. Paul McKnight, Jr., Bowers, E. W. Brown, Jr., R. V. Mills, Johnny Brown, W. Scott Wilson In 1950 the Empyrean was dedicated to the comparatively new principal, Mr. Orren Presley Evans, for his fairness and sincere efforts in behalf of every student. Throughout the years since that time, this same principal, through the use of every persuasive and kind method, made believers of his students and put the fear of the Lord into them because he believes wholeheartedly in education, in discipline, and, above all, in youth. His justice and good nature left no doubt in their mind that he did what he considered necessary for what was best for them. The 1970 Empyrean emphasizes the debt Newnan High School owes to his leadership, and with this year book, we pay special tribute to Mr. Evans, the associate superintendent of Coweta County schools, for all he has meant to Newnan High School. Talent and skill were quite obvious on the gridiron as Newnan gloriously defeated Troup; beauty was most charmingly displayed with the presentation of Miss Homecoming and her distinguished court. Indeed, all of these factors made the day of September 26, 1969, a highlight for the Newnan High School student body; but, most important, the memory of it all will be highly cherished by those who felt the pride, spirit, and accomplishment of such a grand occasion. On Tuesday evening, February 16, the Newnan H igh School Key Club held its PARENT-TEACHER- STUDENT LEADER BANQUET. The banquet began with a meal in the Newnan High cafeteria and for the remainder of the program, the group moved to the Au- dio-Visual Room, where Wayne Robertson, president of the club, presided over activities. There, the program continued with an intro- duction of special guests, among whom were Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Evans and Glenn Hollis, the club sweetheart. Parents, teachers, and student leaders were recognized with special tributes and were pre- sented with mementos of the oc- casion. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Carol Cole, who sang popular songs and was ac- companied by Rhonda Bonner. The highlight of the banquet was the recognition of the Key Club's OUTSTANDING TEACHER for the 1969-70 school year. The recipient of this year's award was MRS. RUTH CROTTS, head of the math department. She was presented a handsomely engraved plaque re- cognizing her contribution to Newnan High School. The speaker for the banquet was the Rev. Roger McDonald, pastor of the Central Baptist Church. He spoke on the subject Understand- ing — Pathway to Human Dignity, which is the club theme for this year. The banquet is given annually by the Key Club in an effort to express its sincere gratitude to those who make Significant contributions to the school during that year. The school year is all in pictures and memories, some good, some bad, but all here . . . Newnan High School. We sometimes looked at each other and wondered if the book was worth the time. It was work - frustrating and sa- tisfying work; we cannot deny that. The pressures of dead- lines that had to be met, pictures that had to be taken, and pages that needed to be drawn up often made us claim Never again knowing all the time that we would not give it up. We both feel that this year's EMPYREAN could not have been done without the help of our efficient staff. We sin- cerely want to thank them because we deeply appreciate their cooperation. In giving thanks, we must not forget the generous help of Mr. Allen of our faculty for pictures; Mr. Smith in the En- glish department for help with copy; and Mr. Johnny Brown, sports editor of the Newnan Times-Herald for the many, many sports pictures. And we owe Mr. Hutcheson a special thanks for his un- derstanding and help with our problems. Two people who helped in every way were our sponsors, Mrs. Sanders and Miss Andrews. We thank Mrs. Sanders for advice and for aid in the selling of ads during the summer, handling the ad money, and the layout work of the advertis- ing section. Miss Andrews we thank because she drew lay- outs, wrote copy, made up pages and sections, took pictures, and gave advice. Next year will bring change, but we hope you will hold this book as the memory of Newnan High School in 1970. We wish next year's staff good luck and hope you will enjoy putting together a memory book of your year as much as we have. Students, we hope you like it. There is no way to state how very proud we are to present you the 1970 EMPYREAN. Co-Editors 1970 EMPYREAN Unn- 'Wirtri- m- E - . Br-m ■ W::
