Her entire life has been devoted to a great profession, and she has constantly and consistantly dedicated herself to the teaching of our native language and culture. She has instilled in our hearts such unforgettable lessons as “A thing of beauty is a joy forever,” “ Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,” and ‘To thine, ownself be true.” For her high stands of Christian character, for her sin- cere interest in every student, and for her encour- aging us “to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” in our endeavors, we are indeed deeply grateful. As Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Ulysses” teaches us, we are a part of all that we have met. Certainly, she has truly became a tremendous part of our lives, and her influence will remain with us in a mighty way. Miss Maryella Camp, we genuinely appreciate your many years of service to Newnan High School. For the OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD this year, the Key Club chose the guidance coun- selor Mr. Allyn Bell, a man who is truly a guiding light in our school and who typifies the NHS spirit. 38 Bud Freeburg Ken Kurth - CAPTAIN AND MOST VALUABLE PLAYER FOOTBALL CHRISTIAN ATHLETE Bill Strickland - BEST BLOCKER Andy Whitlock - CAPTAIN AND GOLDEN HELMET AWARD Tommy Jenson — MOST IMPROVED PLAYER Jerome Dunson - CAPTAIN AND BEST DEFENSIVE BACK Jack Powell - MOST REBOUNDS BY A PLAYER Jerome Dunson — MOST VALUABLE PLAYER Frank Barron Tommy Jenson — MOST IMPROVED PLAYER BASKETBALL CHRISTIAN ATHLETE Frank Barron — HIGH SCORER 41 ■ • ■ jtoof 4. eA etniv‘ uu i-j«p«h APUBg-' jsifw x' w Ismh .f. Without her assistance, criticism, and encouragement, our annual could never have become a reality. Throughout the year she inspired us to work harder, instructed us in what we did not know, and worked with us and for us. For her efforts and pa- tience, with deep gratitude, we dedicate this year’s Empyrean to Miss Barbara Andrews. 109 Because the Newnan City School System and the Coweta County School System merged this year to become the Coweta County School System, the Newman City School System ends in its eighty-second year of operation. In 1887 the Newnan School System was established with a thirteen member board. There are seven members on this year’s board, and it, as all others, was elected by the people. The members of this year’s board are E. G. Cole, Jr., Vice-Pres- ident of R. D. Cole Manufacturing Company; M. F. Cole, MONY C.L.U.; R. V. Mills, Personnel Manager, Marathon Division of American Can Company; II. C. Drake, M.D.; James A. Beavers, Beavers Packing Company; W. Scott Wilson, Vice-President, First National Bank of Newnan; R. W. Neville, Kirby-Neville Company, Inc.; Mrs. Lavane Leach, Secretary to the Superin- tendent and the Board of Education. Superintendent O. P. Evans BOARD OF EUDCATION Seated: James A. Beavers, E. G. Cole, Jr., M. F. Cole. STANDING: Mrs. Lwane Leach, O. P. Evans, R. V. Mills R. W. Neville H. C. Drake, W. Scott Wilson. 112 To the students of Newnan High School: I am confident that you join me in congratulating the 1968-69 staff of the Empyrean. Through their efforts, they have provided us with a book of memories of Newnan High School. To the class of 1969: I sincerely hope this edition will serve you as a reminder of happy, industrious, carefree, though sometimes trying, days at NHS. We wish for you success, good luck, and Godspeed. To the underclassmen: This edition of the Empyrean is a challenge. NHS definitely has the major factor which comprises a good school — an excellent student body. I am sure that your contri- butions to Newnan High School will equal and, I hope, exceed those of previous classes. Let me leave you this throught of Oliver Wendell Holmes as ex- pressed by the late President John F. Kennedy, “. . . ask not what your countiy can do for you. Ask what you can do for your countiy.” Using this thought, ask yourself this question in regard to your school. “. . . ask not what your school’ can do for you. Ask what you can do for your ‘school.’ ” Principal 113 Miss Barbara Andrews, English Mrs. Martha Arnold, Guidance, Mathematics Mr. Maxwell Bass, Physical Education SOME JUNIORS TACKLE NEWSWRITING .... Grammar and literature are the basic courses in Eng- lish that every student is required to take four years. Speech, debate, creative writing, and drama activities help to round out the English program. Senior English involves a taste of college-level writing and thinking and the study of English literature. Some juniors tackle newswriting by taking journalism while the regular English classes study American litera- ture and have a general review of grammar. Sophomores and freshmen are introduced to Shake- speare by studying Julius Caeasr and Romeo and Juliet. They are also given a general background in literature and the fundamentals of grammar. COUNSELORS, STUDENTS DISCUSS FUTURE . . . Mrs. Arnold and Mr. Bell work directly with the students to help them plan curriculum that will assure them that their future plans will work. They send transcripts, college applications, job applications, and recommendations for students who request them. Other students are helped when the guidance department counsels with parents to help them better understand their chil- dren by understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Teachers also work directly with the department for the better understanding of their students. Mr. Allyn Bell, Guidance Mr. Jerry Boren, Industrial Arts Miss Maryella Camp, English 115 EXPERIMENTS AID SCIENCE STUDENTS . . . Laboratory and non-lab classes are offered to the NHS students by the Science Department. Chemistry and physics are offered for students with an ad- vanced interest in science. For non-college-bound students, phys- ical science is available. Biology for sophomores and general sci- ence for freshmen are other classes in the curriculum. Films, filmstrips, teacher demonstrations, student experiments, and classroom displays supplement textbook information. CLASSES STUDY FOREIGN COUNTRIES Reading, writing, speaking, and lis- tening to a foreign language are the ma- jor skills students in the Language De- partment learn. Four years of Spanish, two years of French, and four years of Latin are the courses offered. Tapes and records increase a student’s listening compreshension and improve his own pronunciation. Films, bulletin board displays, pictures, travel posters, and items from a foreign country aid students in visualizing a foreign country and culture. Drafting, shop, and agriculture offer students a basic knowledge which can lead to either a vocation or a fu- ture leisure-time activity. Courses in the Home Economics Department prepare the students for a family-centered career — homemaking. Basic home economics classes are offered and cover a wide range of topics — fabrics, diets, child care, housing, and creative expression. The importance of the family and how to manage a home in the best interests of the family are studied in the family living courses. Boys and girls in the family living course prepare special projects' centered around the family and at Christmas display their creative talents. Miss Sara Allen Mathews, Miss Mary Janes Miles, Spanish Chorus mm PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES MEAN EXERCISE, FUN . . . Gaining physical skills and developing interests which can be used after school years are the main objectives of boys and girls in physical education at Newnan High School. Daily routines of exercise are included in most classes. Volley- ball, basketball, softball, and football are some of the sports par- ticipated in. Another outlet for talent for the NHS students is music classes. Instrumental and vocal music are offered as well as a class in music appreciation. For students who play instruments, the band meets each day to practice for the ball games and the annual concerts. Students vocalize their music talents in choral groups. Male, female, and co-ed groups are available. This year the members of the chorus presented the operetta Annie Get Your Gun. Mrs. Lyn Smith, French, Social Studies Mrs. Phyllis Smith, English Mr. Richard Smith, English Mr. John Wells, Jr., Chemistry, Physics BUSINESS STUDENTS USE NEW EQUIPMENT .... Although many of the courses in the Business Education Department train students for the business world, many also help them develop skills for personal use. Typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping prepare students for college or for after-graduation em- ployment. General business, business math, of- fice practice, and business law are also offered. Students in the F.B.L.A. — a club for business students — are office assistants and teacher assist- ants. They do much of the duplicating and gen- eral office work. JUNIORS STUDY AMERICAN HISTORY_____ Amid a bevy of class lectures, student discussions, book reviews, films, and special projects, NHS students fulfill the requirements of the Social Studies Department. Offered by the department are American Government, American history, world history, geography, civics, and economics. Mrs. Amelia Woodroof, English Mrs. Genevieve Davis, Curriculum Director Mr. James Worley, Vocational Agriculture Miss Carrie May McElroy, Visiting Teacher NHS’S DAY INCLUDES CLEANING, COOKING, OFFICE WORK Behind the scenes each day were the members of the non- teaching staffs at NHS. These people did the office tasks, the cafeteria work, and the custodial chores. The custodial staff came early in the morning to start the heat in the building, and they stayed late in the afternoon to clean up the litter after a normal day of school. The cafeteria staff began early each morning to prepare a good variety of foods for the many Tigers who wanted to buy their lunch. The office staff did the daily office work necessary to the smooth running of a large high school like Newman. Keeping student records, preparing daily announcements and bulletins, and bookkeeping were only a few of their duties. M rs.
