Memory of this place would fade quickly but for the splendid people it housed and the events in which they participated so creditably and warmly. Assistance, Chivalry, Fun, Folly, give a feeling of warmth, stimulate an atmosphere of creativity, and weave lasting friendships. «V Keeping constructively entertained offers a chal- lenge for many people. For Theo Mann, extra time is spent at an exhausting but satisfying game of golf. Coach Butch Dean, Ed Wyrick, Andy Fields, and Bud Freeburg check the weather before going “up, up and away,” while Ronnie Thompson makes his debut as a “wagon master.” Rehearsing and re- hearsing until his drum solo is perfect absorbs Bruce Jackson’s pastime. Many moods surrender to entertaining, satisfying, sometimes exhausting but always constructive uses of leisure time. From morning ‘til night our days are consumed with study, with work, with talk. Moments and hours of concen- tration are spent gaining knowledge as Tommy Ayers strives to understand the day’s assignment. Mr. Pitts ex- plains a science secret to the Science Club officers. The shortest five minutes of the day are the rushing minutes we spend going to our next class. During these school days filled widi our study, our bafflement, our insight, even the teachers pause to lend professional assistance. Mr. Pitts ad- vises Miss Crow on an experiment with fabric stains and commercial bleaches. 10 A memorable year is made by . . . performing at the football half-time, making posters for homecom- ing cars, exciting school spirit from the loyal Tiger fans, escorting the Homecoming Queen, participating in the Sr-Tri-Hi-Y powder puff game, . . . slowly walking away in a con- tented mood after a well-done job. 13 Hurrying through the week of study, we relax for the week-end. Football and bas- ketball games fill Friday nights. We loyally attend as sport fans to cheer the teams or as Science Club members to feed the fans. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thurs- day, Friday do not supply time enough to rehearse for the fall drama production. Usually, rehearsals are scheduled for Satur- days and Sundays, too. Slowing down from a rushed week and a week-end of fun, we take time to medi- tate, to reflect, to thank. 14 --— Uiiiwninw «msmsk 1968 . . . NEWNAN HIGH SCHOOL . . . A FULL YEAR ... A MEMORY . . . THE NEWNAN HIGH STUDENT, through STUDIES that promote knowledge and maturity, through FRIENDSHIPS that add pleasures, through SCHOOL SPIRIT that inspires enthusiastic loyalty, through PARTICIPATION in activities that stimulate creativeness, encounters the total high school education. As a result of these experiences, these moods, these memories, a student is better equipped to face the world and all the possibilities it contains. 17 BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR NEWNAN CITY SCHOOLS SEATED: Mrs. Lavane T. He has been unselfish and devoted in all of his efforts. Bud Freeburg, vice president, has contributed much to the progress of the club. Several times he has presided in Charles’ absence, and his talent for photography has been unexcelled. Lewis Powell, secretary, has been very efficient in getting our monthly reports in on time. Although this office is a tedious job, Lewis always gives it his best. Brad Sears, treasurer, has proven to be highly competent. Though he has to do many hours of book work, lie constantly performs with efficiency. Theo Mann, Lt. Governor of Second Vision has kept New- nan on top this year. Theo has done a creditble job in this office and has brought much honor and recognition to our club. Randy Miller, senior director, is, perhaps, an expert when it comes to paper sales. He has been in charge of 107 and has rendered a great service to the club. Frank Barron, junior director, has been responsible for keeping all members properly informed. He has also served as chairman of several committees. Sophomore director, Brown Powell, has been a member of several committees and has proven himself to be a worthy officer. Mike Turner, sergeant-at-arms, has been responsible for keeping order at our meetings and for collecting fines. Al- though this is not a popular assignment, Mike has served well. This year’s Sweetheart is a pert, vivacious young lady. She is captain of the cheerleaders, Empyrean contestant, and every- body’ s friend — Miss Gail Pike. One of the finest faculty members at Newnan High School is Mr. Richard Smith. He has devoted many untold hours to the Key Club boys as their sponsor. 118 SOPHOMORES Lee Hambrick Emory Holland Joe Jackson Joe Powell Phillip Shepard JUNIORS Henry Camp Bob Farmer Jet Henson Joe Parks Jack Powell The Key Club is primarily a service club whose motto is “We Build.” Our goal is to build home, school, church, and community by rendering un- selfish service through outstanding and rewarding projects. Mortimor — Johnny Austin Elaine — Terrie Watts Aunt Abbey— Peggy North Aunt Martha— Betty McCalla These villans not only constit- uted a narcotics ring; but also drove a poor young girl to the point of near in- sanity — all be- cause of their evil and selfish schemes. Teddy, thoughtful and elert, has everyone fooled as too his true identity. He carefully analyzes each person and weighs all the evidence on hand — successfully coming up with the cor- rect conclusion. s I Julia looks a little up- set in this picture, but has justification because her tale of the ghost train is now becoming reality. This yearbook shows the activities and events, people and places, growth and progress, feelings and memories that have made the year. We hope you accept and approve our recording of a very suc- cessful year. There are many people who deserve thanks and recognition ... Thank you, Mrs. Sanders, for working with the business staff this summer so that the ads were ready when school started and for your helpful suggestions, encouragement, and presence. Thank you, Miss Andrews, for your help in make-up of the entire annual and for your incompa- rable advice on the part of the annual assigned to me as editor. Without your assistance and expe- rience, my job would have been impossible. A special thanks to you, johnny Brown, Sports Editor of the Newnan Times Herald, for pictures that we would not have if you had not taken them. Thank you, staff members, for hard work and thanks to all others who helped in any way to pro- duce this book. To next year’s staff — good luck and we hope you have as much fun as we have had. And to the student body — although it is im- possible to record every incident as you remember it, perhaps this 1968 EMPYREAN will help you recall other memories. The memories are yours. This book holds them for each of you to interpret as your own. We hope you like it. Thank you again. Editor 1968 EMPYREAN 220 A IN 4 f
