1 — dedication You are a friend to all, and your smile has been a shining light in our path through the years. The ideals of Chris- tianity and knowledge which you hare set for us exemplify the fine friend and teacher you are. Our school spirit has been greatly improved because of the earnest efforts you have put forth in our athletic department. Because of these and many other fine qualities, we, the class of Nineteen Hundred Sixty One, proudly dedicate this, the 1961 Empyrean, to you Mr. Mack E. Jennings. foreword We present to you Newnan High School, 1961. We present her as she is—beautiful, warm, understanding, and vitally alive with people and spirit. We hope that you will always remember her in this way. During our years at Newnan High School we have received the knowledge and the inspiration to attain the goals set before us — to reach our ffhighest heaven” — our Empyrean. Her gracious charm, poise, and sparkling smile gave her the nod from a panel of out-of-town judges. She not only has beauty, but brains. Senior Jbyce Johnson VCVC Five girls from the student body were elected to rep- resent Newnan High at the 1960 Homecoming activities. These girls were elected on the basis of beauty, per- sonality, popularity, poise, and charm. From these five beauties, the student body elected a Homecoming Queen. Hunter Pike “II has been said that a chain can be no stronger than each of its component parts. One weak link can cause the strongest of chains to break in a moment of strain. As this is true of such an object as a chain, how much truer could it be of people bound together by a common purpose. Mrs. Skinner Mrs. Hatchett Mrs. Hutchinson EDITORIAL There are many theories about beauty. Someone has said that if a girl would be pretty as a picture she must have a lovely frame of mind. A day never passes that does not provide some opportunity to build up and maintain 1 his beautiful frame of mind. A per- son who continuously wears a long face and acts as a hermit can never give a boost to any- one’s morale. Why? Have you ever seen a gloomy person try- ing to cheer up another gloomy person? Of course not; each just adds a little more to the glum feeling they share. Here we see that happiness does not come from two unhappy sources. On the other hand we see in- stances each day illustrating that the attitude of one smiling per- son added to the attitude of one bothered friend equals total hap- piness. Even greater happiness is acquired for the already cheerful person and, too, we see a change in the friend. Marie Hudson 54 PRO and CON There is enough emphasis plac- ed oh our Homecoming activities. Con Is there really enough empha- sis placed on NHS’s homecom- ing activities. Definitely not! We students could show more school spirit by planning something really big to make Homecoming a night to be remembered. For the past two years, aside from the crowning of a home- coming queen, and maybe a small parade through town, the homecoming football game is similar to any other football game. I think we should start, plan- ning earlier in the year to do something different to make the next homecoming the best yet. instead of repeating the same thing over every year. Our homecoming activities should be something we are proud of and are willing to get out and support. Carole Hyde Who will be the ‘weak link in our school? It is the desire of the Chieftain staff that no such link could be found, but the faci remains that such links may exist. No school can be greater than the individual personalities which -compose what is called by the administration, the student body, just what is your spirit toward your subjects, the administration, sports, band, and literary events? Are you going to be an unin- terested. indifferent person who will keep our school from becom- ing one of the most friendly, co- operative. personable schools in the state?
