As the month of November rolled around, there was an air of excitement around town. The idea of playing in a new gymnasium and experimenting about the kind of season we would have. The new team lacked height and experience and for the first few games everyone was really worriedg but as the season progressed the worries became fewer as far as the schedule went. We ended our regular season with an eighteen and two record, losing only to Somersworth and Raymond, but we also lost our final game to Tilton-Northfield in Rochester in the tournament playoffs. The N.H.S. basketball team had a much better season than everyone expected and enthusiasm for basketball in town has grown greatly. IU, U l 7 til If f- , 5 G J J i'! CROSS-COUNTRY The boys of Newmarket High started their fourth year under Coach Landroche and with many meets coming up, started right to work as school opened. The season was very successful as the boys lost only one race to Class NAU Dover. The boys ran good races but sorely missed George Walker and Richard Caswell. Some of this slack was taken up by two seventh graders, Bobo,, St. Laurent and Richard Hazeltime, which we expect to be around for quite some time. Jacques Gagnon, Eliot Bosinger, and David Noon were always up in the five nearly the whole season. Due to inexperience we came in third at the state meet after wining the Cham- pionship the two previous years. Back row: Betty Finn. Sandra Walker, Marilyn Stevens. Crystal Harden. Carol Walker. Kneeling: Hazel Gilbert. Jeannie Ryan. Betty Shelton. Eight enthusiastic cheerleaders had practicing well underway by October with the direction of Head Cheerleader. Marilyn Stevens. To save time, the tryouts were held in the spring of fifty-four. As was agreed. only one cheerleader was chosen to replace the three graduating cheerleaders. Crystal Marden was chosen by the squad and faculty. Those girls returning from last year were: Betty Shelton, Betty Finn. Jeannie Ryan. Sandra Walker. Carol Walker. Hazel Gilbert. and Marilyn Stevens. Connie Sharples was again chosen mascot. Uur Cheerleader Rally was November. The auditorium was gaily decorated in our school colors, red and black. Approximately 25 cheers were exhibited and following a dance was held. Gretchen Mason was our substitr' Leerleader. Mr. Avery was our Advisor. We competed in the Southeastern lu league Cheering Contest Klart-h ll in Ray- mond. W'e hope we have been a great asset and have helped our team. 4 ly 5-'Z' f '-' Fi f W I MM WN Af f' if , .X 1 ' V,Yll I., ff -5 . ,,, 5, Q 2 fy ', H 4 1 X-' ws W. A.
