MUSICAL NOTES One ot the many actxvitie ol which Newman High School has a rlght to be very proud is its musical standing People of neighboring towns as well as our own local people are beginning to notice Newman more and large crowds always appear for the musical programs Mr Browning started many grade school students a few years ago and now they are beginning to blossom out and be of real value to the band The band displayed well its ability to play and march by performing for all home football games Since these game were held at night Newmans colors looked beautiful upon the green The highlight was homecoming night when the Newman Redskins went on the war path at the half of the game The band played Indian Boy for thi dance Newman was represented at the Eastern Illinois State Teachers Lollege Homecoming and marched in the parade with about thirty other bands At the annual Pancake Festival the red and white was judged best among the eight high school bands participating November 26 27 Joanna McBride lim Marshall and Joe Wamsley attended as well as being tun and the band wa proud to have three of its members chosen One of the numbers played at the clinic was the new Thendara Over ture Mr Goble liked the number so well that he chose it as one of the bands contest numbers For the tirst time the band played at all the home basketball games A variety of music from marches old and new tax orites and boogie Woogie to hymns at Christmas time were played Miss Murrs twrrling class put on several acts with the band during the season Mr Goble has established a new 'Joint system to earn music letters this year For every practice attended 5 point are given Also for 5 points a student may practice for 45 minutes at home or school or play his instrument at some program 15 points are given to each student who plays when the band performs Various points are given for tht divisions xx on in contest and tor being in an en semble Those students who at the end ot the year have 1500 points are gixen a music letter This system stimulates practicing and has therefore improved the previous system of letter avs ardlng , Y 'M A L 1' 4 B ' A 1 I - w' 1, 1 1 , , ' ' 4. , my .
