Hrstory Of Our H1gh School The hrgh school from whrch wc are soon to graduate has a cornparatrvely long and rnterestrng, hrstorx It was organrzed rn the early 80 s of the last centurv under the name of New man Hrgh School located on the srte of the present grade school burldrng w 1th Elrjah S Smrth as 1ts frrst Pr rncrpal Srnce that time rt has gone throu h varrous rccrrganrzatrrrrrs and hrs been known by drfferent names but 1ts lrfe has been contrnuous The new born rnstrtutron gave to the cornmunrty 1ts frrst graduatrng class rn 1885 Thrs clas consrsted of two members Samantha Anderson Casebeer and Luther Hughey both now deceased Mrs Hattre Sutton Crarg Fansler of Newman who has the drstrnctron of berng the oldest lrvrng alumnus rs a member of the class of 1886 Because of a need for expansron of educatronal facrlrtres rn the communrty a progressrve Board of Educatron took adxantage of a new school organrzatron law p sed early rn the present century and or ganrzed the Townshrp Unrt rn Aprrl 1909 The old Newman Hrgh School was drssolved and the new unlt embracrng Hlgh School Forced out of rt old locatron the new organrzatron took refuge rn an abandoned Presbx terrrn Church burldrng on the corner now occupred as the home of A M Johnson O C Barley was Prrncrpal durrng thrs reorganrzatron perrod and served as Prrncrpal of the new or ganrzatron durrng rts frrst school year 1910 11 At thrs stage of development the hr h school hrd but four teachers and less than erghty students Thc course ot studx embraced only the mrnrmum requrrement of srxteen unrts and rll were requrred or graduatron There were no electrve courses and no vocatronal courses J H Trrnklc became P rncrpal rn 1911 and served rn that capacrty unt11 1948 The new burldrng, w as completed rn 1913 and rts frrst graduatrng class was that of 1914 In 1937 the hrgh school area w as 'rcreased by the addrtlon of some forty frve sectrons lyrng w cst of the crtv of New man and rncludrng the town of Murdock The new organrzatron strll retarned the name and Board of Educatron of the New ' . , . , ' . , , . .
