The last show of the 1979-80 Prime Time season left the audience of the TV program Dallas in shocked sus- pense as to who shot I. R. Ewing. The question held around the world did not concern World Affairs or Eco- nomics, it concerned 'Who Shot I. R.' 'Dallas' fans, worldwide set out in search of the villian early in Iune many placing bets throwing I. R. parties and promoting contests. Newspapers gave the person who sent in the best hypothesis a chance to meet IR Bobby or Sue Ellen Ewing. Some people had interesting ideas on who the fiend was. Besides the obvious villian Sue Ellen other cast members were suspected. Kristin Bobby Pamela Cliff Barnes Miss Elly and Lucy were often candidates for police questioning. When November 21 arrived the day the World would find out who dunnit the film was flown by secret carrier to New York. CBS tried to get permission to show it simultaneously all over the world so that no one had the edge on the answer. After months of waiting the answer was finally revealed in the last five minutes of the program when Kristin revealed her gui t. Moonraker and Grease were few of many movies seen on Cable Television. For just a small amount of money a month you could watch any movie you wanted at any time of the day or night without the interruption of commercials. Cable Televion came to Carrollton bringing stations from as far away as Chicago Illinois and Atlanta Georgia. Many sta- tions carried live concerts and special sports events. Starting in the early part of March the cable company began laying the cables and many Car- rollton residents were able to take advantage of the service by early May. It often made home dates more fun because it was like having a private movie theatre in your living room. 5 5 1-I . y . v R Q . , ' Y ' ' tfufi n ll I l . 3 L 1 was the first eruption of a volcano in the U.S. in.60 . . Hopes for their release have been periodically raised and then abruptly shattered. Walter Cronkite brou ht the reality of the situation closer to home when e came into our livingrooms via television and reported to us the latest Iranian incidents. The moment the Shah set foot on American soil the U.S. Citizens stationed in Iran were placed in grave danger. The Carter Administration tried in vain for several months to find a country that would be willing to grant the Shah permanent asy- lum. Finally in April a squad of trained Marines left the U.S. to rescue the hostages. However the mission was aborted and several U.S. Marines were injured. Many U.S. officials contend that the Iranian incident was unavoidable. ' 0 . l. U in Seldom has an American Election headed into such a wildly unpredictable conclusion. Suddenly after the years of campaign planning the months of speeches the endless TV appearances and hand- shaking tours the Presidential Election took second place to the 52 American Hostages in Iran. Because of the hostage situation Carter and Reagan took the chance of facing each other just once in full in the week before the election. The choice of who would govern the nation for the next four years depended heavily on the acts of a hostile Iranian government. The impression two careful rehearsed politicians made in a fleeting 90 minutes of TV time was deeply upsetting to some of the American pub- lic. The election had a bizarre climax. Carter had been plagued by inflation and unemployment at home and turmoil overseas during his years in office Reagan by a reputation for right-wing extremism and simplistic thinking. Each at some point led in the polls' Carter early in the year Reagan immediately after the Republican Conven- tion. The candidates withstood the pressure throughout the campaign period both knowing the stronger would win. In the end Ronald Reagan proved to be the stronger of the two. knowledge that any mistakes could not beyrepaired
