Hopes for their release have been periodically raised and then abruptly shattered. Walter Cronkite brou ht the reality of the situation closer to home when e came into our livingrooms via television and reported to us the latest Iranian incidents. The moment the Shah set foot on American soil the U.S. Citizens stationed in Iran were placed in grave danger. The Carter Administration tried in vain for several months to find a country that would be willing to grant the Shah permanent asy- lum. Because of the hostage situation Carter and Reagan took the chance of facing each other just once in full in the week before the election. The choice of who would govern the nation for the next four years depended heavily on the acts of a hostile Iranian government. The impression two careful rehearsed politicians made in a fleeting 90 minutes of TV time was deeply upsetting to some of the American pub- lic. The election had a bizarre climax. Carter had been plagued by inflation and unemployment at home and turmoil overseas during his years in office Reagan by a reputation for right-wing extremism and simplistic thinking. Each at some point led in the polls' Carter early in the year Reagan immediately after the Republican Conven- tion. The candidates withstood the pressure throughout the campaign period both knowing the stronger would win. In the end Ronald Reagan proved to be the stronger of the two. knowledge that any mistakes could not beyrepaired
