Moving Uptown in '81 Well, this is the ending of another school year. Some of us will get jobs, pursue careers, go to college, or come back for another year, but remembert e beginnin of this year? We were anxious to see the new wing that was finall finished. Most of us got our first look at the theater the second week of scffool when the Drama department performed their production of Infancy. Pep rallies were filled with excitement. We could decide between going to the cafeteria, smoking area or m. Those who went to the pep rallies participated enthusiastically. Students Sfelmonstrated their spirit by continuing the tradition started last year and dressin up in various outfits including pajamas, togas, multi- colored wigs, army outfits, and halloween costumes. Those who chose to spend that 45 minutes in the smoking area visited with their friends or smoked. The ones who preferred the quiet of the cafeteria studied or tried to get away with playing tiheir ra los. Trojan Pride was the theme we adopted for this year. We had spirit that built throughout the week and climaxed every Friday. One Friday, pride got a little out of hand when a couple of vocational students from R. L. Turner instigated a fight by making their presence obvious. Trojan Pride was on eve wall, every fund raiser and on every person's mind. Some of the things we coiilld buy to show everyone how much pride we had were sunglasses, Trojan Fuzzies, Trojan Pride towels, R. L. Who t-shirts, ribbons and pins. By far the most exciting game of the season was our 24-8 romping victory over Richardson. After the game, the dam broke in the stands and hundreds of Trojan fans swarmed on the field. Tears streamed down their faces as they hugged players and carried Coach Bubba Fife to the goal post where everyone then prayed. It was the first district ame we had won. Weekends were filled with more thin sto do. Besides the usuafgathering spots of East Hills, Bennigans, and the movies, tliere was Malibu, camping at Hillshire, new places to shop and new restaurants. Andrews, Pelicans and the Quorum shopping center were a few new places to visit. It probably took a while to get there, though, because of all the dips in Beltline. jack-in-the-Box was still popular even thou h they closed their doors at 2 a.m. instead of staying o en all niglgt. Carrollton just wouldn't stop growing. People kept moving in from other counties, states, and countries. This contributed to the many diverse personalities of our fellow classmates. Welcomin both the old and new students to our school was an army of crickets. They pllagued us with their music in the m, hallways and classrooms to the annoyance of almost everyone. The new stores tffat sprang up gave us additional job opportunities which we took advantage of to make car payments or for extra spending money. The increase in stores also gave us more places to spend that hard- earned money. Administration made stricter rules this year. These were enforced by the campus cop and teachers who patrolled the halls, cafeteria, balcony and smoking area. When the administrators got tired of hearing our tape players and radios blaring in the halls, Mr. Studdert announced that they would be taken up if students were caught playing them. All of us contributed to making our school count. The fine arts department, athletic teams, science, history, and english departments and other organizations kept Newman Smith moving uptown. Donna Huchingson tries to block out the lions on sunglasses day. Singing the alma mater, Ms. Debra Pul- len shows dedication to the Trojans. l l
